Is Chapter 4 "make it or break it" for you?

So FDev hasn’t really convinced me they can make the game less grindy, more fun and rewarding while maintaining a good balance between risk, effort and reward. Core issues with too much randomness and little to no ingame mechanics to discover stuff remain, while some parameters are tweaked in the name of ’balancing’.

Q4 offers many features I look forward to, but I wish FDev would acknowledge the core problems and present a plan on how to address them. It’s not a make or break or me, I love the game. But if gameplay issues were fixed along with new content, I would play the game a lot more, and I believe the number of ED players and buyers could be a lot bigger.

I'll be interested in watching the PVP crowds take at the end of the year.

Currently, I don't have a lot of time, so I am limited in playing. In short, I am not going anywhere, but I don't have large chunks of time to play either...

Well it should be, but I guess I'll just have to use Windows.

ED is a dip in game for me. Might leave it alone for a bit, but I'll always be pulled back.

I see it like you... couldn't resist:

For me, it more or less is.

If it wasn't for the social interaction outside of the Game, I'd have left a very long time ago. Basically done everything the Game offers, so it did its job.
It'll always rank very high on my list of "best bang for the buck", no argument about that.

Other than that, Atmospheric landings would be a candidate later on my list to check out, but that's a long way off from the looks of it.
And my main concern wouldn't even be the mechanics i.e. of Atmospheric Flight, but a potential near-complete lack of Gameplay similar to what we've seen with Horizons.
Plus, I don't think the dated Cobra Engine has anywhere near enough capability to make things look jaw-dropping to make it worthwhile just for the visuals to compensate for any lack of Gameplay.

Anyway, not a big issue. I'll be checking out another title after its release sometime this year, so that'll put ELITE onto the backseat one way or another.

At the very worst, I'll just find another game to play for a few months, which is what I did when interdiction was broken after 2.2 (I think) until it was fixed.

Nope, will just keep playing as I ever have.

Same, I'll just keep enjoying what I have.
and if the next 'paid' expansion offers me something I want I'll cough up (for two because it's my round, my nephew paid for the last one)

The only thing that will deter me from playing would be compulsory Open, then I'd shove the thing right wher... but that'll never happen... hopefully

I'm expecting Q4 to be -

Group chat, and a group grind object that doesn't affect much (mobile docking base) - AKA Squadrons.

Three new mining activites, requiring a hardpoint for each.

Achievements collector in game (Codex)

Probes for scanning planets/rings. Analysis mode melds with this and mining.

A few new "Anomolies" to be found in USS's in deep space.

Another guardian site type allowing you to unlock the gaurdian "Vessel" that got spoilered by the obelisk bug.

Minor mission changes.

Limpet controller racks.

Another couple/few ships (At least one of which will be a "Variant" of something we already have)

So I already have my expectations low enough for it not to bother me really.

I think a better question though might be.

"How important are the exploration/mining updates to you"

That seems to be what a lot of people have been crying out for since the launch of the game.

For me, it's massively important, I've never really done any exploration, because as far as I am concerned, it doesn't exist in the game currently. I really want to go out and explore though. I am expecting no more than we've been told about though. Which is "analysis mode" which I expect will be a HUD change and some bits of information (possibly combined with forcing you to use it for more things than you would want, because they don't have enough actual gameplay for it), the "New anomolies, of which I expect a maximum of three types, and the probes.

That's all I expect to see exploration wise.

Of late I find myself playing less and less. I'm hoping for some nice improvements to gameplay but will continue to shun the MMO aspects of the game. If I can't engage on a level playing field, there is no interest on my part. And they will never be able to fix the networking issues apparently.

Some fleshed-out gameplay would be nice, as would improved explorer mechanics. I'll just have to wait and see. Until then.

Q4 isn't a make or break thing for me. The game is the game, whatever FD does with it.

If they introduce too many bugs, I'll likely take a break again. If something else catches my eye during that break, ED will likely go the way of other games that I abandoned along the way. I generally play one main game at a time with little time wasters slipped into it here and there. A new game doesn't have to be a space sim. A decent strategy game could pull me away from ED as well.

If I do leave ED in the rearview mirror, you won't see a quit post from me. I never left one before and can't see why anyone would do that.

For me it's a yes, I said at the back end of last year that would be the case and it still is. I've been on a break from the game these last 2 months or so - more to do with other things going on than boredom with the game - but as those things have recently settled down I'm not feeling any massive desire to get back in the pilots seat.

I really hope Frontier can deliver some of the sort of changes I'm after in the remainder of the year, if they don't, well, I've had a good run with Elite D and there will be no sour grapes from this commander.

I've seen that comment many times in various places. I tend to refer to Q4 update as "make it or break it" as well, when it comes to my involvement in Elite.

There sure is a lot of hope and expectations for Chapter 4 in the large part of the community, judging by the comments all over the internet, be it these forums, other forums, various Discord severs nad social media platforms...

So just wondering how many people feel similar. Is Chapter 4 going to be "make it or break it" for you?

Make it or break it would imply some sort of hope, of optimism that something you long for would get implemented so you can enjoy it and if that something is not there come Chapter 4 or is implemented horribly it would "break" the game for you and you'd go away. I've learned to keep my expectations in check and expect the trademark mediocrity at least some of us have come to cherish and hold dear when it comes to FDev [haha] I fully expect some half-baked buggy crap that will revolutionize nothing but will add some spice to what is already there so FDev would need to work hard to actually disappoint me, personally. I do see less and less reason to want to support the company financially though and Chapter 4 might very well "break" any such desire for me, but to stop playing it - I don't think so. I'll play it for as long as there is anything I find fun in it and when there isn't I'll simply move on until there is.

No, not for me.

I'm still playing from the last update even though my intention was to return from a trip then park up until Q4 or DWE2.

So even if Q4 is extremely crappy, there'll be DWE2 in the new year (or whenever it starts).

I don't have high expectations anymore of things to come. FD will introduce what they want, whether the playerbase likes it or not or is split about it.

That's a bit extreme. I'm not stupid enough to say if Q4 of this year, or indeed even ED 4.0 does not float my boat, that I couldn't then envisage ED 5.0 haviing something that might.

That said, given the generally poorly designed, shallow bolt on gameplay that's basically dominated the past 2-3yr of the game, if Q4 of this year (chapter 4 or its DLC), or ED 4.0 doesn't show some impressive game design and depth, I cannot envisage how that issue will ever be addressed then...

In short, most of last year I simply lost interest in the game due to the habitually poor/shallow development. This year I've not even touched it. I sincerely hope Q4 will entice me back, but that will need a significant change of design ethos and quality... I've seen previous little over the past 2-3yrs to inspire that hope!

Well, not being a native speaker I perhaps didn't fully understand what "make it or break it" means. I really didn't mean it in a "I will definitely never EVER come back to Elite if Q4 does not deliver!" way. More in a "I'm going to have a very long break" instead :)

It may come as suprising from me but "No". In the recent reddit thread discussing DB pcgamer interview, someone put it into nice words - games like these never "die", because people "lurk" (just like me, lol) and check out on the "progress" and "exciting things" DB is currently excited about. That said, Q4 update would probably be completely irrelevant for me as I don't put high hopes into a "free" update. Like many I wonder what the DLC will be, but I will let other people test it before eventual purchase. Although if it's "space legs" I will probably buy it for the sake of completeness - after all I always wanted to see the ships from inside ;-).

There's still unsquandered potential in locked sectors, and possible exploration improvements. I'm not hoping for anything substantial though. Not unless they knock the shoes of previous producer off the pedestal Adam Woods (?) so lovingly spoke of in some of the livestreams...

I just sit back and watch from time to time, currently no desire to reinstall at all. But I still own the game, so maybe someday... But after how Horizons panned out, I am not expecting a miracle out of FDev at all.

I learned today however that X4 wont support VR... so that is 1 of my backup plans scuppered.
It isn't ruled out yet tho:
Will X4 support Virtual Reality?
No, not at release. Virtual Reality requires major changes to the game interface, balancing as well as severe changes to ensure a proper framerate (read: performance). Thus, if there will be a VR version, it will be a standalone game.

which basically means I will hold until such version is released, probably :p Same no pressure attitude as with E: D.

Maybe. It also depends on the promised paid content for this year, and according any news we'll know, about ED in 2019. All that should be this Autumm the latest. In any case, I agree with you, Chapter 4 is going to be, a critical moment in the life cycle of ED.

Maybe I like Chapter 4, so I'll play ED, in 2019. Maybe I don't like very much Chapter 4, but I'm fine with the paid content for 2018 and the news for 2019 will be promising, so I will continue playing ED in 2019.

Maybe I'm feel dissappointed with Chapter 4, so I left the game, or more probably, play very little time in 2019, taking a break. Maybe paid content for 2018 is delayed or a fail, or we'll have no news about 2019 content until Q1 or Q2 2019, or even worse, I dislike that 2019 news.
