Is Chapter 4 "make it or break it" for you?

Pffft. Seriously?
Absolutely not. This is the greatest game I have ever played.
They could cancel the Q4 update and tell me I have to pay another $50 to keep the servers open. Id say "Thank you sir!"
I hope Q4 is awesome. Im super excited about it. I have high hopes for it, but its all gravy.
Only one thing will make me stop playing. Finding a better game.

I think the OP's questions is better posed within the context of other games that are on the way (and there's a few of them now!)

So the question might be whether the Q4 update and announcement of the next year is going to be enough to keep us from spending more of our time on the other space games that are coming out.

We only have so much time on our hands and the sometimes glacial speed of meaningful content delivery and narrative might be good enough reason for us to be wooed more by other space games.

Personally I think Frontier have been given a warning and more needs to be done to keep ED relevant in the context of other space games coming out.

It's not a make or break for me either.
Oh! just saw your edit Rootsrat! :)

I don't really get to play very often nowadays but as a ks'er and LEP I'm looking forward to whatever comes out with Ch4 without having to pay extra for it and will try all the new bits. I play in VR and simply enjoy flying past a few planets and suns and stuff :)
I don't think Q4 will be the decider for people, I think it's what comes after Beyond which will give more indication of what's in store for us for the next year and whether some people will be disappointed or not.

Possibly, but probably not in the way that the OP intends.

When reading that question, I guess most people will probably take it to mean "If 'Chapter 4' is garbage, are you likely to stop playing ED?"

To that, I'd say no.

As long as I can still play the game in the same way I did when I originally purchased it, I'll be quite happy to carry on - regardless of how terrible any new content is.

The only way they could screw up 'Chapter 4' badly enough to deter me from playing would be if it involved some fundamental change to the game which actually prevents me from doing the stuff I currently do.

Hell, even if FDev decided to turn ED into an RTS, where you use a map to move your ships all over the galaxy and do stuff, and only jump into the cockpit to maximise your chances of succeeding at something, I'd still just ignore that option and carry on playing it exactly as I currently do.

No. I like flying my space ship around where I wish. Chapter 4 will simply add more stuff to enjoy. When it arrives, I'll enjoy that stuff as well. Same for Chapter 5.

Nice to read such an up-beat post. I feel the same.

Naw, not make or break. Honestly just going to continue dropping in to do what I do from time to time for as long as I like doing it. No plan beyond that.

For me, no. I bought an LEP.

It's only "make or break" for the Design Team. The game will survive even with new personnel leading the development team. FD's is seven times the size of Hello Games, who seem to have achieved three times as much in a third of the time.

Christmas is definitely coming.

I'll be picking it up after a good stint with X4, to see if FD have grown a pair.

I've seen that comment many times in various places. I tend to refer to Q4 update as "make it or break it" as well, when it comes to my involvement in Elite.

There sure is a lot of hope and expectations for Chapter 4 in the large part of the community, judging by the comments all over the internet, be it these forums, other forums, various Discord severs nad social media platforms...

So just wondering how many people feel similar. Is Chapter 4 going to be "make it or break it" for you?

:EDIT:

Some additional clarification :)

Yes & No. I will almost certainly always pop my head back into the game on a semi-regular basis, regardless of how the final chapter of Beyond actually looks......but if it is all I hope it to be, then it will be back to being my "most played game" again.

As much as I do love what little they have shown us, regarding Mining & Exploration, it is Q4 missions that will be the big decider for me. I remain of the view that they already have everything they need, within the code, to make Missions feel more like unique "Mini-stories", they just need to tweak & flesh out the mechanics more, to make them work at their full effectiveness (like moving mission targets away from the Procedural end of the spectrum, towards the more Persistent end of the spectrum). If they do that, then I'll almost certainly devote the bulk of my spare time to this game again.

While there's sure a lot of things which can be improved, it's not "make or break" for me. As long as they don't completely mess up the flight model and thus kill pure joy of flying, i'll still be here.
.
That being said, some new things to do sure would be attractive and i'd still very much welcome some nerfs on engineering effects. But that's another story.
.

So, to clarify my previous post. No, a poor Q4 will not cause me to stop playing altogether, but a *great* Q4 will definitely increase my amount of play-time significantly (it largely dropped off thanks to things like the Civilisation VI expansion (Rise & Fall), BattleTech & me finally discovering Skyrim! ;) )

Yes and no. Squandering the chance to really improve mining and exploration would make me seriously question paying for another update. However, since Q4 is technically free, the real make it or break it is what happens after that. I'm not sure I'll ever permanently put the game down, since I put so much time in and that's value in itself, but voting with my wallet instead of faith would be the rule going forward. I'm just overall exhausted with the 'put it in now, fix it later' mantra that game developers have adopted (because we've paid for it).

Wait what? You must be probably the last person on Earth who didn't play Skyrim, before. :D

I'm not going to quit, but they broke my motiivation when they broke my passenger missions.

I can hardly find any missions worth considering.

I don't know. Really.

Elite has been a break for me from another game. It's been relaxing to me. However, it is starting to get a bit, I dunno, stale, too.

I like Elite because, right now, there is nothing more expected from me except to play the game as I wish without commitment to anyone or any one thing. I can play as I wish, when I want. Which means, of course, I rather like the three modes of solo, private group, and open as they are and the choices they afford me. When they start taking that away and "forcing" folks to play one mode over another, then I'm likely to start pulling away. I see hints of that, and I hope they divert from this before actually implementing something which will cause regrets - on my part or theirs.

I really want to use my DBX more, she's my favorite ship. She's kind of been forgotten by the game, nothing to make her special beyond a slightly better jump range, but even the non-explorer Anaconda can get much better. I still love flying her, though, and even if they come out with a new explorer, I want to keep my DBX. She's special, you know?

However, exploration overall isn't all that engaging right now, either, and I really want it to be. I want reasons to explore beyond the bubble that don't just mean scanning a planet for credits, so I hope there will be more out there to grab my curiosity.

I would also like to see more in-game narrative and story, but I'm not lost without it at this point, either.

So, I guess I'm in the wait-and-see camp.

Q4 would have to show a significant change in direction for me to be interested. What I expect is more of the same - some cool art assets, some half baked "gameplay" loops that are interesting for about 20 minutes, more truly awful "carry A 2 B" missions and a storyline that is completely missing in action.

Maybe a thargoid capital ship, if you're lucky.
