Is it possible to identify stars in the skybox?

AS the title says really. I'm out exploring and I've spotted an interesting looking star in the distance, is there any way of figuring out what star it is/correlates to in the galaxy map?

Maybe you should try to fly in the direction. So Star to Star in Frameshift, not in normal super cruise. There will be a point where you can choose this star and jump to it.

Kind of, by jumping in its direction, but its not always easy. There is no "click and done" function in game right now. Or at least not that I know of.

Couple of options:

1) Randomly target nearby stars from your navigation panel; when you hit upon one which is close to your target star in the sky, you have a rough idea of its direction.

2) Look for the plane of the galaxy and any nearby nebulae. See where the star is relative to them. Repeat the process on the galaxy map.

also note that "M" dwarf stars and under will probably not be visible unless they're very close*, and "K"s will only be visible close; if you can see something in the sky, it's probably one of the brighter star classes. Set your star map filter for "G" and up and have a look around.

*e.g. we can't see Proxima Centauri with the naked eye even though it's the closest star to us.

Wouldn't it be cool to be able to select it directly! Without going into the map.

Kinda wish there was some galaxy map holographic overlay where you could pick it.

Wish there was a way to select a star from the sky box and have it take you to it in the galaxy map.

Jumping it its direction usually is the best approach, usually if you can see it it will be a big/bright one.
Or a cluster that is far off

All of the stars/objects in the skybox are actual stars/objects, but there is no way to click them directly, you have to go to the map or use your nav panel.

I love it so much compared to every other space games fake skyboxes, especially the alpha skyboxes elite had, so fake

Well, Elite Alpha had some pretty damn sights, I really miss them.

The basic answer is yes, I'm going to do a vid on how to use the skybox to find 'rare' nebula... coming soon(TM) but basicly yes....

Just selling data ..... Dum de Dum...

I don't know how that would be possible, think about the load of information the system needs to handle if you're eg near the core with all the stars around...

It would be nice if the HUD had a navigation mode where it would highlight stars that were within your current jump range. This shouldn't require too much processing and would be a very cool way of exploring. The galaxy map is great for plotting routes, but I would really love to be able to just look at the sky and think "I'll go to that one" and just go.

Have had this issue myself several times where you see an intersting area ahead but actaully struggle to get to it.

One thing I wish they would do is make an arrow icon of your ship on the map. So when you go in to the map view it shows the direction / orientation your ship is facing.
.
Another thing would be the ability to trace a route you want to take. This would be a guide line to use for plotting your actually star jump route.
.
While I am at it the posibility of selecting a group of stars and have computer select the best route to visit them all.

There's no method of targeting directly as far as I'm aware, but what I do is just identify it by manoeuvring the galaxy map into a similar camera angle and orientation as where I'm looking.

You can target any starin the galaxy from the map and it should show you where it is in the sky (if you're close enough) ;)
