Is it possible to scan the ring of a ringed white dwarf

So I found my second ringed white dwards and thought I would try to scan the ring. Made sure to stay out of the jet cones but chickened out when I was some 3 and something ls away from the star and it still said "too far away". So my question is, is it possible to get close enough to scan the actual ring?

that depends on a lot of factors (how large is the ring, how dense is it, how large is the star).

btw. - you don't have to be "close enough" for mapping to map a ring. get close to the ring and fire a probe into its direction.

Are you sure on the latter? I always have gotten the message that I'm too far (if Im too far away). However then I also have had the main body of the ring targeted. Is it possible to fire a probe without having anything marked? Because this has also been a general problem for just not me when it comes to extremely large rings where the outer ones can't be scanned.

if you have another body targeted you can fire a probe, and scan the ring of another body. i think the problem here being additionally to that, that you generally can't map a star (so i think you can't fire a probe when targeting the star).

The fact that you actually cant scan the star is really not a problem. The problem is wether you can get close enough for "probe scan range". I have scanned the rings of several brown dwarfs, they are however so cold you can get close enough.

You still have to be in probe-firing range of that another targeted body. Often the big rings are too far away from any astronomical body.
yes, probably i was just lucky (with an ringed L-class and a close orbiting body).

so - anybody has ever scanned a white dwarfs ring?

Not sure if you can cosnider black hole a "star", but I was able to fire probes at black hole and it was quite a show... :) did not manage to get any results though, but the way the probes were flying was fun to watch...

You do need to be in range of something to fire a probe, but the probe can be fired in any direction.
A probe fired into gravity well will be affected by that gravity, ie the probe hits the planet but can be sent up and over to hit behind or hit the inner ring from the back.
A probe fired away from a gravity well will continue on that vector until interrupted. if theres a max distance I dunno what it is.

So in some larger bodies you have to sit inside the rings and fire out. I had one that literally took 3 minutes before it hit the ring, I had actually given up.

As to WD, theoretically if you can get close enough which I dunno if you can. Would need a massive ring as wide as the Cones themselves probably to have any chance.

Could go for centre of WD until drop out, then turn around and SC and instantly try it, if out of range here its a no go as you cant get closer to the WD. No need to die just lose bit of hull. Its for science, small casualties are acceptable :)

Never thought about that... Nice!
Rconsidering the need of some swarm missle racks on exploration ships :D

:) That reminds me, that I have pledged to this guy who is supposed to give me access to some swarm missiles as a reward... That was4 months ago, before I departed for my exploration trip... Gotta head back to finish that assignment... :) But I'm commited to circle the Galaxy this time, so I guess it will have to wait till summer... :ROFLMAO:
