Fellow explorers, please help me out here. As per the thread title, is it worth it?
I couldn't help but notice that Faulcon DeLacy ships are on sale right now. This puts the Anaconda at around 119 million, which is around 23 million in savings. Naturally my first instinct was to rush back to civilization and pick one up. Then I started to think about it for a little bit...
For a set up like this it would cost a little over 150 million after the discount. For a similarly set up Asp it costs 23.5 million. Is 4 ly per jump worth 127 million?
For a little bit of context, apparently I like jump range. My first trip was around 30000 ly in total in an Asp with ~34 ly per jump (with a full tank). I was just over 20000 ly traveled and guess what happened? Clippers went on sale! I made a mad rush back and ranked up to Baron with only a couple of hours left. Success!
Off I went again a few days ago, but this time with nothing but unobstructed glass in front of me. It's quite incredible. It really is. I've managed to squeeze a tad over 25 ly per jump out of the thing, but wow can I ever notice the difference. It takes considerably longer to travel 1000 ly. It's about 9 ly per jump less, but it seems to add around 20 more jumps to travel the same distance, which adds quite a bit more time. I DO get to see a lot more systems ... so it's not the end of the world. I just feel really slow.
When it comes to combat I prefer the smaller ships. I wouldn't use the Anaconda for that and I hate trading. In other words it'd be a dedicated explorer. A really expensive one with a really high operating cost.
Am I crazy for thinking about this so much? Has anyone else considered these things? Help! I think I've been away for too long...
