Is the cost of an Anaconda worth it for ~4 ly per jump over the Asp?

Fellow explorers, please help me out here. As per the thread title, is it worth it?

I couldn't help but notice that Faulcon DeLacy ships are on sale right now. This puts the Anaconda at around 119 million, which is around 23 million in savings. Naturally my first instinct was to rush back to civilization and pick one up. Then I started to think about it for a little bit...

For a set up like this it would cost a little over 150 million after the discount. For a similarly set up Asp it costs 23.5 million. Is 4 ly per jump worth 127 million?

For a little bit of context, apparently I like jump range. My first trip was around 30000 ly in total in an Asp with ~34 ly per jump (with a full tank). I was just over 20000 ly traveled and guess what happened? Clippers went on sale! I made a mad rush back and ranked up to Baron with only a couple of hours left. Success!

Off I went again a few days ago, but this time with nothing but unobstructed glass in front of me. It's quite incredible. It really is. I've managed to squeeze a tad over 25 ly per jump out of the thing, but wow can I ever notice the difference. It takes considerably longer to travel 1000 ly. It's about 9 ly per jump less, but it seems to add around 20 more jumps to travel the same distance, which adds quite a bit more time. I DO get to see a lot more systems ... so it's not the end of the world. I just feel really slow.

When it comes to combat I prefer the smaller ships. I wouldn't use the Anaconda for that and I hate trading. In other words it'd be a dedicated explorer. A really expensive one with a really high operating cost.

Am I crazy for thinking about this so much? Has anyone else considered these things? Help! I think I've been away for too long...

Hey, this all boils down to where you explore.
If you want to get very far as fast as possible yes there will be benefits to that 4ly. Approx 2-3 less jumps for every 1000LY of travel.
The biggest benefit would be if you are travelling at the very extremes of the galaxy, either in the outer rim or top/bottom where stars can be over 35LY apart and plotting decent courses can become difficult.

Otherwise no, stick to your ASP. Im buying one just to leave in port at the moment (assuming I make it back). Will consider using it later but want to make use of the discount.

It's not just 4ly, it's also faster scooping. But no, it's not unless for a very specialized application (finding furthest reachable star from Sol, and stuff like that). Asp is the best overall explorer ship -- I own an anaconda and will likely not explore in it.

Have you ever pushed your Asp wanting and craving and wishing you didn't have to stop at just 36ly jumps?...

Have you ever found yourself wishing to have 140MM more JUST to pay for those precious extra 4 ly???

No??

Ha! Well said. I think I needed a bit of a reality check. The more I've thought about it the more crazy it all sounds.

Thanks everyone :)

It's not only the jump range. You get 8 utility slots for heatsinks and tons of internal space for auto maintenance units, both things keep you going far longer. So for a really deep and long exploration run I'd very much prefer the Conda.

Yes, it costs. :) But for rare situations.
For example, I tried to reach the NGC 5307 planetary nebula three times. Asp with 34LY and 36LY jump range was unable to get there. Anaconda with 39.4LY jump range — mission complete:
:)

Isn't the Anaconda getting extra fuel tank capability = longer jump ranges in 1.3 ?

The fuel tank determines how far you can travel between scooping, not how far you can go on a single jump.

This is my Anaconda setup. As concolor says, great for reaching those hard to get to systems. On my recent trip there was a system 39.33 LY from the closest one so only a 'conda could get there.

Drawbacks are:
- price, obviously
- wear & tear costs. On my first trip these amounted to more than 11m credits! Not an issue if you are just looking to pay the bills but it really eats into your profits if you want to accumulate cash
- in stripped down form, the Anaconda handles like a cow. As such it's not much fun for scanning

Overall, if you want to get somewhere specific that's far away or will require a large jump range then the Anaconda every time. But for anything else, the Asp wins out.

No, fuel tank capacity tells you how many jumps you can do on one tank (e.g. without fuel scooping a star). In fact, the anaconda is not as good at this as the asp -- it uses a class 6 FSD, which uses 8 fuel per max range jump, vs a class 5 FSD of the asp which uses 5 fuel per max range jump. However, the anaconda shares the asp's 32 T fuel tank. This means that the asp can make 6 jumps on one tank, while the anaconda can only make 4.

That said, the amount of internal compartments in the anaconda will ensure that should you choose, you will be able to outstrip the asp's fuel tank range in 1.3 by just loading those compartments with extra fuel tanks.

I am not an anaconda fan for exploration to be honest.

is it discounted everywhere or only shinrata ? and when does discount end ?
(am in deep space now, next journey will require more range :) )

Shinrata is the discount (~10%) for being a back OR for players that have reached Elite in one of the combat/trading/exploration ranking. This lasts forever (as far as we know).

Zaonce is a community goal discount (16%) for 14 days from the 4th. So if you want one I'd aim to have 127mil credits and be in Zaonce on Sunday 14th at the latest.

It ends in 14 days. I will still be in the void. Personally I am waiting to see what the Imp Courier and Diamondback have to offer. as much as I like my Asp, when I have the blue light of a type B in my cockpit it looks industrial to say the least.

Yeah, that's my new plan. I think I was having a midlife crisis. Very happy I didn't go through with it. Phew!

Very much looking forward to the two new ships. Hopefully they don't have super bright lights shining right at your face. That was starting to drive me mad in the Asp. Fingers crossed!

I wish ships kept more of their engine sounds in supercruise. I thought the idea was that the frame shift drive creates this bubble and your thrusters move your ship, and voila -- supercruise! Right now all ships kind of sound the same, and I miss my bumble bee asp engines :(.

I think the idea is more that the FSD creates a bubble and moves it. You're not actually moving inside the bubble so no thrusters in operation at all.
