Is there a new story driven campaign with 2.4?

The closed beta had a significant amount of work done on improving the experience of playing, through things like new music, lighting and textures. Visiting the crashed ship was a bit like being in the early stages of an Alien film.
Next step is meeting actual aliens. The site had doors...
Ok, and a new rift also helped, but I'm thinking the story is about to begin.

I am not against any additional features, modes and/or content.
What I am trying to say, and possibly failing doing so, is that budget and time constraints are probably too big to execute 'space legs' to a AAA standard along with other features that have been planned/hinted in any forseable future (10 year development plan financed solely by microtransactions ?).
Certain other space sim with budget uncomparably bigger is struggling for years to iron out FPS mode and to incorporate it properly with the rest of the game (for various reasons admitedly).
Everything is doable but I would rather have fully fleshed out space sim than bare bones FPS tacked to there-is-something-to-be-desired space sim.

So you're worried about the future and FD's ability to deliver based on supposition of FD's financial arrangements and dev team, and anecdotal evidence of some other company's issues; but have this corollary idea that if they can't actually accomplish this task in the future, they should somehow retroactively not work on it now and in the past, so as to improve the parts of the game that already exist. I can see why this is a tough point to get across.

We get that - we've gotten it for a long time. Remember the whole "Mile wide, inch deep" thing? We totally get it. 3.0 has been indicated at growing that depth.

As for how that 10 year plan is going to be financed - unless you're privy to some information the rest of us are not, we can be 100% sure you're pulling things out of thin air here. Remember, Tencent just poured a lot of money into Elite recently? I promise they did not do so in the form of half a billion micro-transactions.

And ten years is quite a span of time - look at what's been done so far. Yes, it's a lot of framework, but necessary framework.
Now we're starting to see that framework begin to fill out, or will, going into what I will continue to call Season 3. And beyond that?
Since we don't know what will come in Season 3, we can't even begin to speculate about Season 4 or 5, let alone 9 or 10.

It's quite conceivable that some kind of FP-bipedal (I don't even want to call it FPS, because we don't know that "S" will really be much a part of it) gameplay could emerge anywhere from Season 4 through 10. I highly doubt we'll even see framework for it before Season 4 at the earliest, and more than likely it will begin to take form around Season 6 or 7, and entering it's final form in Seasons 8 or 9, leaving Season 10 for that final ner... balancing pass and polishing that will stand as a testament before time.

This. I shall be avoiding the forums so as to avoid having to read "I was the first to harvest Thargoid Poo"

If you avoid any of the out-of-game tools like the forums, Reddit et cetera you may never actually ever get to meet a Thargoid or encounter a single piece of the story. I know for a fact, that I would have been hardly able to find any of the engineers without Inara. Nor would I have found a single astroid base or megaship without Reddit.
I still have no idea what the guardians were. I certainly wouldn’t of been able to find one of those alien bases on a random part of a random planet without the statistical averaging of 1 million other players. So you see, there is no delivery mechanism. There’s just a few galnet articles buried under tons of auto generated statistical garbage.

So here’s hoping for a real story centric component this time. One that lets people who don’t want to trawl the forums on the Internet for information actually enjoy some content for once.

I really really hope the storyline stuff isn't something that "all players can experience". I enjoy the exclusivity and the realistic nature of the storytelling. I mean, if this were real life there's absolutely no way everyone would come into contact with a Thargoid. Most people wouldn't even hear of them.

Yeah, that's something I hope Elite will not ever get. As much as I enjoy story modes and single player adventuring in other games, I'd hate that in Elite. No big hero story for everyone. Every pilot just a pilot and only a few will ever make it to the news with their discovery.

The plan is to have a dedicated forum section for this so it hopefully won't be all over. The mods, Brett, and myself will be working to keep the spoiler content to a very specific section so that it's not in everyone's faces who want to experience the new content for themselves.

As for the way it's going to be delivered, this will be through the game as it currently stands - not an additional part of the game. It'll still be within the same galaxy driven by the same data. It also won't be all in one go, since some aspects will be happening later. It'll be an ongoing endeavour.

Great idea to have a separate forum section so one can avoid spoilers and experience it for themselves if they want. [up]

Does this have replayability? I mean if a new player wants to experience it can he do so with only in-game information? Not check the forums or online guides.

At approx 6:15BST 22 Aug I responded to a chain mail mission set by Pleiades resource enterprise. Message reads: cmdr, federation has received intel that a ship has been attacked by unknown aggressor. We need someone to recover the black box so we can learn more about this incident and what kind of enemy we're facing. We need you to find the black box. Message ends. Doing BGS for the wing faction why not, just a milk run.

Payout was unusual... 4.5 million credits for a milk run. Then this happened!

Yeah, this is how story do and will happen in ED. And it gets better all the time.

I think it is very promising way to do that.

Yeah but this literally just happened... I wasn't expecting it. The thing that was odd was the pay out. And the wording in the message

I'm currently having to rebuild my rep with the ant hill mob so I can dock at obsidian orbital without being gunned down

It only a black box but I feels like more

2.4 will be a whole year long I think with every 3 months a new clue, they had the chance with making a engaging story driven immersion with powerplay,
but it did not happen, with all the secret and we want to surprise you im now a bit lean back and will see wat really will happen.

Powerplay is meta game, which certainly can have story elements in it, but overall is just a meta board game for people with loads of money to get involved in.

I think the recent beta had quite a big hint toward space legs - found in the holo-me customization menu - looked like options to choose different clothing to me, something not needed when you are sat in your all-in-one space suit on your ship...

I'm pretty sure people have already found non-cockpit areas of some ships fully rendered. I wouldn't be suprised if 'space legs' has been part of the development process for a long, long time now, with work being done on it in tandem with other features we're yet to see. Once complete (or not in the case of multicrew) the feature gets released.

Yes! This is part of what makes ED special, the fact that the player is not special. This is a game where the community is integral to the game. We share trade data and the like via EDDN and the like. When we want to know how, for example, ship heat works, groups of complete strangers get together, discuss methodology, conduct experiments, then analyze the results and share the knowledge.

When the storyline starts unfolding, thousands of players get involved, exploring the story in game and figuring it out together.

This isn't a game about one person's story. Player groups make their own collective stories, whether it be Powerplay based, BGS based or something else, and each player makes their own story, but we experience THE story together. And those who aren't interested are free to focus on whatever it is they are interested in.
