Is there a single bit of this game...

...that has never been criticized to death by this community?

I'm seriously concerned. It is a singular phenomenon. And a negative trend. Every single bit, code snippet, module, patch, feature, game design, even things that still have to come in have been despised by someone (me too!) on this forums.
We are at a point that we often speculate on what next expansion will bring in and start to criticize it! We are a perfect model of modern opulent western society. We have amazing things, we have everything, but we are perpetually dissatisfied. To the many who start threads with the "I have put xxxx hours into this game but...", just think about the beauty of that. You have a toy that was able to keep you nailed for so many hours of your lives. It is something very rare. There are so few masterworks in gaming industry capable of such addictive potential. So let's stop thinking about what we don't like every now and then, and try to enjoy what we do like of Elite: Dangerous. Will we? ;)

I think the sound effects have been praised in general (and are pretty awesome).
Station voicecoms were much approved.
I was about to put the Docking Computer forward but you're right, some people complain :)

Positive threads where everyone agrees come up quite often, but don't generate as much traffic as the ones where opinions are divided.

I like the game, I liked it at 1.0 and I still play most days, but this would be a boring place if we all agreed about everything ;)

The sound-effects when using headphones are awesome! There's so much that you miss just using a PC's speakers.

The attention to detail by the graphics team is often astonishing. For instance, did you notice during the "alien encounters", when the CMDR's ship lost power and drifted, the edges of the windows frosted up (watch one of the many Youtube videos if you missed it)? Somebody thought of that effect and programmed it into the game. It didn't have to be there. Nobody would have complained if it wasn't, but they put it in anyway. Way to go graphics team!

You make it sound like criticism is a bad thing. If I think a change would be beneficial and it's in accord with the categorical imperative, I'll criticise it because I like the game and want it to improve.

There are plenty of games/franchise reboots I bought and I never even bothered registering on their forums to provide criticism because I thought they were and not worth my time.

That is a 'cool' effect, but that's been in the game for as long as I have been playing. What was clever or coincidental was using it in that sequence.

I welcome criticism.
It us often delivered by people dedicated to what they criticize.

I can only speak for myself, but if I bother typing my words down and posting them on the forum of this game it is because I want people to think about it and give feedback. And if some game developer glance upon and only just a bit reflect upon the post - if it is anything related to game interaction or game mechanics - I am all the more happy.

I have played this game for 2 years and love it just as much now when I started! But that does not mean I should not give my thoughts on things I would like to see improved. :)

The "flight" model is pretty much universally praised as is the look of the game and the size of the galaxy. Those things are mostly praised because they are what FD is good at.
Game play mechanics is what they are awful at and thise mechanics touch pretty much every other aspect of the game. Hence all the complaints.

Gamers are like wives/girlfriends. They complain because they care. When they stop complaining, it's because they don't care anymore and now your video game/marriage/relationship is doomed to fail.

Criticism is a good thing, I just hope the devs realise that people complain because they actually like the game and don't lose heart over the complaints.

Of course there's plenty of aspects of the game that nobody has criticised yet.

For example, there's that um thing... and uh, the name escapes me just now. Oh, the phone's ringing - I'll get back to you in a sec.

Flight mechanics have been criticized before. I think one of the more commons gripes at launch was how ships yawed.

Works the other way too!

Every embarrassing failure, poorly implemented feature, unaddressed bug and badly thought out mechanic has its group of fanatics that insist the result is the bees knees and there is just something wrong with the user's computer or playing style.

They maintain that it is being positive, but its not, its just sycophantism.

Its not hard to find both criticism and praise on the forum, but you can deliberately overlook either if you want to.

You look at it from the wrong vector.
If people care enough to voice their opinion, then you made people actually care about the game.
If nobody would care, then this forum would be empty and Frontier would have ceased development and nobody would talk about it anymore after a while.

Fans can and must be the ones criticizing their favorite thing.
Because they want it to be better.
Which is also why I don't understand why some people defend the shortcomings of Elite to the death, with the most ludicrous arguments.
Why not just agree that it could use a plot that can be followed and played better if you come later to the party instead of insulting others as casual and noobs when they voice that concern.
But I guess nowadays a safe space, echo chambers and no criticism at all is favorited over a better product.

Are you forgetting that it was their publicly stated goal to solicit criticism and feedback from the community over every aspect of the game's development from the outset?

They got exactly what they claimed to want, no sense complaining about it now.

I've been working on my own theory about this. My thought is that people feel like they have a chance of changing the game if they complain hard enough. This causes them to complain any time the game doesn't match their mental picture.

I think FD has brought some of this on themselves. By being a Kickstarter game, a sense of ownership perimates this community. But maybe more importantly, FD has taken player advice quite often.
-
I have rendered my opinion on this forum more than once. But this has never really enhanced enjoyment of the game. My new goal is to trust in FD's vision a little more and be patient while it comes to fruition.
