Is there a way to clean up distance rendering?

One of the only problems i have left to try and resolve in the game (during VR use) is that of ships more than say 1000m from me.
Basically, they start to become an indistinguishable mess of jagged shapes (and sometimes even starts going "double" if too far away to see properly).

Obviously this doesn't happen on a monitor, so it's definitely a VR thing.

I don't have a full list of "settings" to hand, but for reference, I am using the "VR High" quality setting. I am then using 1.5x for the super sampling.
I originally tried setting this in the steamvr.vrsettings file and lowering it / off in game, but that didn't really help. So I set it to 1.5x in game as well and the text seems a bit better (which was why I changed it in the first place).

but I digress - the thing I'm trying to fix is the fact that anything (ships, stations, etc) at a reasonable distance (although not stellar objects. Just stuff that moves) is rendering really poorly for me.
Is there anything I can do to improve this?

Hardwarewise, I am running:
- HTC Vive

- nVidia GTX 980 ti
- i5 4670k

I've got a Vive as well. Things that really worked for me:

  • Turn AA off! It's a mess in VR.
  • SS at 0.65
  • HMD Quality at 2.0
  • Medium settings on most other things.
  • And Draw Distance at max of course

Try max draw distance first before changing anything else. When happy with that, then mod the other things one at a time. That way, if something does not look the way you want, you can roll the one change back instead of trying to figure out which of the six things is borking your system.

That sounds very sensible! :D
I'll do that cheers!

I tried that setting. HMD quality really made a difference, but. I would recommend not adjusting SS but leave it at default(1). Setting it to .65 makes text really hard to read, even with HMD quality 2. So leave it at 1 and adjust HMD quality down a bit if the gpu struggles.

I disagree. But it depends on your in-game activities. If you're out exploring or mainly do trading it's easy to up the graphic settings, but if you want stable (and high) fps and visuals on planet surfaces, busy stations, CZs and what not, SS at 1.0 leaves no room for HMD quality. And I'm running off of i5 6600k and Asus Strix 1080.

But opinions vary. :)

Seems like you're both right.
Adjusting the SS down as suggested did make the game run smoother for me, but had the added downside of more illegible text (unless I look directly at it).
Turning up the SS improves the text quality but seems to diminish the framerate somewhat which made things a bit jerkier.

Indeed. But I find that higher HMD-Q is better than higher SS for text. But again, opinions and all that. :)

Btw. If you hit ctrl + f while playing you can check your fps on your main monitor (tipping your HMD). Not everyone is bothered by lower fps, but if you're wondering, or the jerkiness annoys you, try checking your actual fps. :)
