Before Odessy you could go to System Map, click on a planet and you could see the raw materials as part of the ring information
But in the present layout there is no where to get that information

IS there a way to find that out besides mining the ring and see what spawns?

You need to map the planet to see the material list in sysmap

Minerals and Metals Two sheets one for commodities the other for mats, the engineering mats is more of a guide as not all listed mats will be in all of a particular ring type and sometimes those not listed for a ring type will be present. it is best to bookmark the link as it maybe updated in the future.
