is type 10 defender woth it?

I learned to mine with the Annie and it's my preferred mining vessel. I have used the Cutter as well and it's ok, but struggles a bit around close proximity rocks. The larger platforms allow me to stay out a while, have all the tools and still outfit something to defend myself with if I am inside the bubble.
While I like mining, one of my favorite activities in Elite, I don't like spending more than an hour to an hour and a half doing it as it gets tedious if I spend more time than that.

The T-10 fitted out 256 cargo works well in this role.

Used to be able to get a full load in an hour. Not so much these days. I dropped into a double hotspot the other day for core mining, scanned about 40 rocks before I found a core of what I was there for. Not worth it. They all had basically the same pulse wave signature. When they nerf something they go all out. I'd hate to see them drive on icy roads, all the overcorrecting would be catastrophic.

For core mining I use a Keelie, prospectors only. It's a blast to swing around the asteroids and manually scoop the bits. Nothing else is as fun and challenging as flying like that. The Keelie fits between the broken parts well and has very good visibility.
I can make 20 million in just over an hour and have a lot of fun doing it. Chump change, many overlook this kind of gameplay because they can't buy an FC in a day.

Yes, if only for the joy of unleashing packhound hell!

The T10 on my carrier is all seeker missiles and IIRC one LR Pulse Laser. The one last seen in the WitchHead is passenger cabins and collector limpets and heat sinks for old style station rescues.
The Anaconda is set up for laser mining with 4 mining lasers lots of collectors and a few weapons because why not.
My Core mining ship is the Python.

No it is one of the worst ships in the game.

Actually, I find it to be the best mining ship in the game. Unless you're an anal min-maxer, insisting on running around with 700+ tons of ore after each outing, the Type-10 can be outfitted with everything you need for a nice mellow 2-3 hour mining session (I personally can't bear any more anyways). A respectable 256 tons of stash plus the weaponry and protection to make it to the buyer alive.

For core mining my favorite is the lowly Keelback for the same reasons Pville_Piper mentioned above.

Just think if the troop transports scaled with the size of the fight.

A T10 would make a much more interesting visitor than a Vulture as you were waiting on the ground for the enemy to arrive.

it's a shame the ship balance is such that all player ships are effectively dog fighters in regards to combat roles and are balanced to handicap the physical size differences of the ships when interacting with ships or even non-ships of a vastly different scale.

it would be much more interesting if large ships had their own combat roles and behavior that played out entirely different from smaller ships and attempting to play out of your lane would likely end in a very predictable way. I like the T10 over the anaconda except obviously when needing to travel fast or far. huge hardpoints may have factored into the 'fun' of combat with the anaconda if fdev didn't nerf the hell out of them to the point of them being basically pointless. I basically use the T10 for everything except travel. I mine with it, trade with it, do all types of combat with it. It's a brick ....but it's like those ancient roman cement bricks that last forever.

it's gotta be engineered to the hilt to really shine. Otherwise, yea, it would be a bit disappointing in any basic role, because there are better options.

Yes, I play like that. I don't care how twitchy a ship is, if it's large it has turrets. Apart, maybe, for a huge cannon. :)

I only have one of most ships too, with a few exceptions, and it depends if you count "own" or "active". I have two Krait IIs in my active roster, and three active Pythons, but the rest of my "active" ships I only own one of each. In the inactive column, I own two T-9, one T-10 and two Cutter that are dedicated storage ships. And then there are a bunch of ship corpses in various states of disarray.
So a bit OT, but what makes the difference for you between the Python’s off-center seat and that of the FDL? (That strut do is annoying sometimes. If the ship didn’t handle as well as it did, not sure I’d fly it either. Also not a VR user, so that might play into it a little.)

Only big ships I use at this point, on a general basis, are the Corvette(no guesses needed, right?) and a Cutter for war evacs, plus occasional hauling of… whatever I need. It actually can turn pretty well if you keep the throttle in the blue… yes, I know, speed is distracting. But I could never fly one of the Lakon bricks*.

*I’m not sure whether to call the T10 a brick. A fancy brick with wings and a spoiler I guess, but nobody’s going to be winning any racing events in that thing. Even if it weren’t in space.
