I don't use a console so can't help, sorry - but what you describe sounds like you cannot connect to the game's servers - don't know what xbox does for that.

Do you need gamepass (or whatever the subscription thing is called) to get those on xbox?
Yes I remember reading that one or both the consoles required you too pay for the premium service for multiplayer which limited those without it to just playing in Solo.
Fell over this today:
N.B. Xbox live silver disappeared over 2 years ago it is just XBox Live Free now. FDEV not exactly up to speed there but it does look as though Multiplayer and PG still need the paid Gold membership. Gold of course finishes this month when Micro$oft launch "GamePass Core" - what that means for XBox Live Free I have no idea. ¯\(ツ)/¯
P.S. I still play my WiiU.
