Gotcha covered there too.Lovely project, but wrong Elite template.

Jenner, what have they done to your name?!
You just made Pinkie Pie cry, you monster!I seem to get that a lot because of the avatar, but Jenner has a Twilight Sparkle avvie which, despite the similar sunglasses, is a horse of a different color, so to speak.
And though Twilight's great, everypony knows that Rainbow Dash is Best Pony, and that's all anypony needs to know.
They did say this, yes. Whether that's still true, intended or even possible today is unknown.During the kickstarter I vaguely recall FDEV made a statement if they abandoned the game, they would 'make it available' to the community, or something like that but for the life of me I cannot find that piece of information. Does anyone recall something like this ?
I hope as a last act they up the sophistication of the AI flight model.

I'd argue the reverse. Original Elite >>> FE2/FFE - and I speak from having spent the last few months playing all the way through them all.Lovely project, but wrong Elite template.

I suspected you thought that way, that was my pet peeve with your Oolite novels many years ago after discovering them on manybooks.net.I'd argue the reverse. Original Elite >>> FE2/FFE - and I speak from having spent the list few months playing all the way through them all.
Cheers,
Drew.

We have no intention of taking the servers down, but I understand what you are getting at. We plan to archive the game from time to time (ie matching client and servers and game world state), and would release such an archive if the servers were to come down. That would also address the issue of how you preserve an online game for the future, from the whole 'retro' perspective.
Could you elaborate a bit why that is?I'd argue the reverse. Original Elite >>> FE2/FFE - and I speak from having spent the last few months playing all the way through them all.
From my understanding each star system's layout is already pre-determined by a seed. The system just has to be rendered based on that information, on the client that is.(And according to Sandro, the actual asset loading time was/ is only a very few seconds on the client.) The DB on the servers "just" had to be expanded for this system. Do you think that takes a considerate amount of time?I think to keep the database size down, you'd have to generate each system on the fly...which means long "load times" in hyperjumps, every time. Anyone that does exploring is familiar with this...long time in witchspace (in solo) means you are entering an unvisited system.
I'm not 100% sure this the reason...but a game of this scale is tough to run fully on client.
Mostly because the lore of the original game was a bit more original. The Galactic Cooperative and the idea of a loose cohesion of populated worlds with multiple lifeforms appeals far more to me than the very derivative (and IMHO dull/stale) Federation, Empire and later Alliance model used in FE2/FFE with only humans in it.Could you elaborate a bit why that is?
The only propiertary stuff they'd need to give away is their cobra engine? And to be honest I don't think that actually quite up to scratch for todays tech, so it wouyldn't be a huge lossI doubt an offline version will ever be possible. All the steller forge and planet tech is server side along with the background sim. I guess the community could host servers but its probably too much information for Frontier to give away.
Space Engine runs on my laptop offline AFAIK, and it models the entire UNIVERSE.I'm not 100% sure this the reason...but a game of this scale is tough to run fully on client.
I'm not interested in 'sharing' my galaxy with anyone. I want it all to myself (and the NPCs of course).Kinda hard to share a galaxy with off-line mode, that's why the "no" was the final answer way back when. Considering how much cheating and god-mode exploits would be added through modding, it's a silly idea anyway.
