I've only got a tiny squadron, but I still like to play with it

Was this post an excuse to use that headline? Or was the headline an excuse to write the post? 🤣

I'm curious, for all of you who will be buying a Squadron Carrier, what will you use it for? I'm in a squadron of two players (five Cmdrs between us) so we're not very large. Mostly we just game independently of each other, only occasionally gaming together, but we are both interested in colonisation and both interested in eventually building out to the Tenebrae region on the far eastern side of the galaxy.

So this got me thinking, how will I/we use a Squadron carrier? We've both got fleet carriers anyway, so will a squadron carrier just be an extension of that, effectively one more fleet carrier for us, or would it just be for me?

What do you all think you'll end up using the squadron carrier for? For those of you in huge squadrons how do you see it being managed, and for those of you in really small squadrons do you think it'll end up just being effectively a second fleet carrier for more storage space?

Indeed, if you are in a big squadron, do you think you might leave so you can set up a squadron of your own just so you can get your hands on one of these?

For me it depends on the cost/upkeep and carrying capacity, if its better than the 3 FCs we as a small group are using then its worth it for colonisation.

The cargo capacity will be 50,000t, that was in the screenshots Frontier showed. That's shared between cargo and banked ships though by the looks of things.

If I had to guess on upkeep, I would expect about 8 billion to buy it and a respective rise in the basic running cost.

This cargo capacity justify going for it.
A Colonization dedicated solo player with a couple of alts can use almost all of those 50k.

Price? Upkeep? Secondary. Almost all of us old-timers are loaded.

Even if its 10billion to buy, 50K storage on one vessel would be worth it, decommissioning two FCs would cover the cost and help towards upkeep, we would just keep one normal FC for exploration.
The benefit would be that (if I'm getting this right) anyone in my small team can jump the carrier.

That's the biggest benefit as I see it too, that my alt Cmdrs can fly the carrier and the other player in my squadron can also use it when he needs to.

To be honest, this what fleet carriers should have been in the first place.

I see your point but we still need an option for soloers and those just wanting a base in the black, if it wasn't for colonisation i wouldn't even be considering the new FC thing.

It's possible for a solo player to create a squadron with nobody else in it. If I didn't already have a squadron I shared with a friend, that's what I'd do.

Maybe but a tenfold increase in upkeep costs for example would hurt.

While we know the capacity there are important things we don’t know such as jump range fuel usage and the jump timer setting.

How interested would the small squadron be if it only jumped 250Ly for more Tritium used and had the original FC jump timer of a fixed 2 hours + cooldown?

Personally, I'd have preferred it if there'd been less to FCs, especially once FDev decided to make them available to individual CMDRs.

Just 3 landing pads, storage for maybe 10 ships and 5,000t of cargo space.
In terms of upgrades, you'd be able to buy up to, say, 3 add-ons;- a service module (repair/refuel/rearming), a range extender module (magically gives the FC an extra 100Ly jump range), a hangar module (storage for an extra 20 ships) and a cargo module (storage for 10,000t of stuff).
Players could decide what combination of add-on modules they wanted to fit.

If they'd done that originally, FDev could have saved all the extra stuff (marketplace, shipyard, contacts etc) for proper "squadron carriers", which would have created more incentive for players to join a squadron, to take advantage of the facilities there.

As for the OP, I'd say that simply not bothering with a Squadron Carrier is always an option.
I mean, you might get the use of a perk that grants you 5% higher mining revenue, or whatever, but if it's going to cost you Cr10bn to buy/rent and Cr50m a week for upkeep, are the perks going to offset that?

I completely agree with this, it would have made carriers considerably more interesting. What role do you want yours to fulfil? Exploration, mining support, trade and hauling, or combat support?

I definitely would have preferred this to the multi-role carrier we got.

For what it's worth, I've suggested it to my (relatively smaller) squad that we could use the squadron carrier as an easier way to coordinate around building primary outpost stations in colonization, because you can fit all you need for one (or even two, providing the storage is more or less fully free) into it.

Beyond that... I'm not sure. I guess a newer player helping out with said colonization efforts could be given an A-rated Cutter if rank requirements don't apply for those loaned ships, so they don't have to fly that absolute hog of a T9.

Patience, young Padawan, patience (till ~July) :)
Patience? What is this magic word you speak of? Some forbidden dark art?

… joking aside, should it become known that the PC has better handling characteristics than the T9, that alone would be some incentive to get it [for ARX] for my alt. Even more so if it has the 1.5k cargo mark I consider the minimum interest point for monetary purchase.

Or I could just watch the video of somebody apparently finding its stats but where’s the fun in that?

As someone here said before, all I'm interested is the cargo capacity and a bit of jump range.

Whatever dog it might be for flying, I will adjust. Just give me 1.5+K and it will be ARX mine in the first minute the servers go online.

My mother always said to be careful not to ask questions to which I don't really want the answers. ;)

I'm a squadron of 1 with 2 cmdrs. If I were to buy a Squadron Carrier, I woudl absolutely use it for colonization and it would definitely be filled using the Panther Clipper. Though for me the cost will be a factor as I only have 5 Bil in my current carrier and another 2 Bil in my bank accounts.

I have a single colony about 360 LY out from my primary supply port and also my Minor Faction's home system.

It has a lot of slots...

For any squadron, it has the potential to be:
  • The place where the banks are (cash, ships, commodities, materials, etc...), if its utilized that way.

  • The activity Tour Bus for the newer players and players without their own carriers and fitted it out based on what this week's activity is (Mining, Bounty Hunting, Power Activities, Anti Xeno, screenshots with as many commanders/ships as possible on some distant, canyony, dust ball, etc...)

  • The de-facto cargo collection/distribution point or any kind of hauling CG, mined goods, colonisation, etc...

  • Mobile Tritium Depot?
So just like any other fleet carrier but, apparently, twice the size and only 1 per squadron (?)...

Squadron Quartermasters will have a field day with this piece of equipment.

I'm, currently a member of 4 sqns, one back on console and each of my accounts has membership of of a different sqn in Live.
One of these is a solo sqn and another being a member of Op Ida there's plenty of use for a Sqn Carrier there as well as long range Trit tanker for the exploration alt.
The possibility of transferring credits across the galaxy opens interesting possibilities, (Teladi-esque aliens or Dredger Clans willing to trade)...
Also could bring all accounts to a CG or event without requiring multiple slots for the FCs.

If I actually do Odyssey content, selling materials at the bar can pay for my existing carrier upkeep. Assuming I’m able, I will just buy the carrier to own it. It might just collect dust (it might not idk) but I want to own it all.
