Just a casual discussion: How is everyone enjoying the PB so far?

Just wanted to start a thread to see if everyone is having a good time with the PB, and get some conversation started. I figured General Discussions was a good place to start!

great game had a few CTD, other issue too but overall really enjoyed the game

It is absolutely great to hear that, for the most part, everyone is enjoying the premium beta. In truth, I was worried that this game would not live up to what everyone wants it to. Call me superstitious, but I was thinking that this game is too good to be true. A 1:1 scale galaxy with realistic events and all these other things WITHOUT a subscription? I'm bewildered!

And it's only going to get better! Personally, I am really looking forward to random mission generation, be it delivering a letter to someone or taking down a pirate ace. :)

Hi All,

first post. Let me introduce myself. Long time Elite and Frontier and First Encounters player here. Played Elite on C64, Amiga and PC, played Frontier: Elite 2 on Amiga and PC and I am still playing it a lot today in DosBox. Still have my savegame from 1994 with 30 million creds but started over several times just for the fun of it. Almost always flying a Cobra MK III and doing assassinations in Frontier. Still playing Amiga Elite in WinUAE as well. But back to the topic. I am having fun in PB. I really enjoy the graphics, supercruise, the engine sound but a few occasional bugs hamper my enjoyment. Twice already I experienced the screen shaking bug/crash when exiting supercruise, once after I made about 2500 creds in the Federal Distress zone and my kills and cash were lost.

So for me this is just testing, no need to really invest time and effort to advance since it will all be set to zero anyways.I will use the time to learn to fly.

Bug-wise I'm not having too many problems. I had the spinning sidewinder one once, and one crash to desktop, but other than that it's been pretty stable. The game has jittered quite a bit close to ring'ed planets and some ships have been travelling in steps rather than a smooth line.

As for the game, you'll see from some of my other posts today that I'm having an absolute blast. Fun in capitals with sparkles and glowing pink lights. I've not enjoyed a game this much in ages and it's only the beta.

Having a good time.

Not done much proper playing yet. Still trying to get used to the controls.

I wanted to use my joystick for the game, but there are no preset for it. (Saitek AV8R-10). Not had much luck trying to set it up myself.

So I am trying to get a hang of K+B controls.

No crashes and it runs very smooth.

Currently I'm flying my Sidewinder with all the skill of a wet sponge, but I did succeed in getting inside the station to try and dock yesterday. I'd like to apologise to the station staff for all the scratches and dents I put in everything trying to land (and hope the explosion at the end was only a minor inconvenience.)

Today, I worked through keybindings to set things up that worked in my brain, and successfully docked, even with having to switch landing pads from 39, to 21, to 27, to 39, to 21 :)

It can be frustrating for me, but gives a good feeling when I succeed. I just need to practice more!

I'm hooked :)

Haven't had as much time to play as I'd like but I'm liking it so far.
It's a bit more unstable for me than I was expecting based on what people have said - and the v1.1 which was completely stable - , but not at all bad for this stage of development.

It definitely has the feel of an Elite game. There's a long way to go I think, but it's shaping up nicely.

For me so far its everything I was hoping for as far as beta is concerned. The game is surprisingly stable despite the few lag issues / docking bay strangeness, etc.

I must give a huge kudos to the audio artist there. This game has the best sound effects I have ever heard in a very long time. The engine sounds, supercruise/frameshift drive, weapons fire (really, they found a way to have lasers sound awesome), difference between hitting a ship with shields or no shields. Autocannon sounds (damn very well made there too!!).

The whole supercruise within a system and how you navigate thru it is exceptionnal! They could have done an automated kind of warp a la eve but no, you drive it manually. Superb!!

The difficulty. Everything you need to do requires a bit of skill but not too much either. You want to dock? Gotta lineup correctly but its forgiving enough that if you crash into it at low speed, the shields take the hit. Supercruise piloting, want to be efficient? Try to time your deceleration correctly, use a good path away from planets etc. But if you just want to take your time you can do it slowly (and watch the awesome planets flyby).

Its forgiving yet rewarding at the same time! Last night, I went to Chango Dock to park my ship for the night. I lined it up, cleared entrance fine and went strait for the pad, it was done so smoothly that I barely had to use thrusters to adjust. Felt very rewarding. To me, the difficulty is spot on, I love it!

The things I am most looking forward to right now:

-Auto generated missions. (I want our actions to have an impact. So far I have been making kills on the FDC mission but its starting to get old. Good money making tho).
-Galaxy expansion (damn all those clickable stars. Must explore!).
-Out of ship actions (walking around, going inside a station etc).

(fyi, I have no idea what the dev roadmap for this game is.)

IMPOTANT!!! I had to turn off msi afterburner rivatuner statistics or set the global settings to none to get the game to boot up properly without crashing, take note as it may fix your problem.

I'm so glad to see all of these positive replies! I was a little nervous when I put my money down that the project might fall apart. Seeing as this is an MMO not being supported by subscription or microtransactions. I was unsure of how FD would pull it off. Now I see that FD have us, their loyal fans. AND they have a great dev team who are doing a wonderful job. :)

Well, really, the testers (That'd be us! ;)) are here to help Frontier fix their game, not necessarily to play it as if it is a full game. I hope you will stick with it and wait for those bug fixes that are on the way :). I know I am certainly excited to see where this game goes!

I certainly do not expect to play it as a full game, but I did expect to play it as a 1/10 of a game, and I cannot :) I played for a couple of hours friday but since then all I can do is stare at that spinning Cobra ... well, sometimes it's the Sidewinder so it's not always the same ;)

It's been 24 hours, and I've tried to launch the game more times than I can count now. I think I'll give up and come back when they sort this problem out.

I'm in love with this game though.

Still doing the single player combat missions and polishing a couple VAPs. Multiplayer isn't worth playing right now, to much lag and disappearing ships/stations, false landings, etc. We will see later on.

I have big hopes still, but at the moment, i just fly in and out of the station, sometimes follow other commanders around a bit. I have no money so trade is out of the question, apart from the fact I don't know how to hyperspace to another place because the galaxy map is confusing and random button mashing doesn't seem to have much effect apart from a lot of zooming (also the controls/menus are clipped in half on the left side). I agree with what others have said here in that this is 1/10th of the game that we imagined so I might just sit and wait patiently for some more updates from FD.

You don't use the galaxy map to hyperdrive (well i guess you can but w/e). hold shift and hit A, then navigate in the GUI and do it there.

As for myself, I'm enjoying it but I crash every 20 minutes which sucks

So far I have not downloaded the beta premium. I preferred to wait for the traffic to be passed at the level of downloads. Also the first big problems are solved. I also bought the XBox 360 joystick that comes only the next week. Finally in my commitment Kickstarter, the two betas were included in my awards, but I did not want, specially. Next week I will discover a wonderful world ...
