Fixed that for you. Their problem if they provoked people enough to get attacked from both sides.
What about when an outside force with an unchecked military intelligence department starts the fight via false flag? The Federation may be aggressive, but not every conflict they 'started' was their fault.
True, but what isn't known is the moles/infiltrators placed within Imperial factions to ensure they don't turn against the Alliance and stay "friendly."
It's easier to ensure subjugation through brainwashing than diplomacy. Think about the current situation within the United States with Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin.
What if Vladimir helped Trump to get elected to ensure a more controllable co-existance? Trump would be indebted to Vladimir for the assistance provided that put him in that position, therefore exerting leverage and control of another power.
Now, given this example and the issue of climate change. Russia is largely not interested in the problems of climate change because they seek to make millions from it with the melting of ice regions that will yield large deposits of fossil fuels. Trump also doesn't seem to care about climate change issues. Why? Likely because he also wants to profit from the exposure of those deposits as he is a cohort of Russia.
Things going on in this game are not so different from real life happenings. Difference is, you can have a more proactive response to what's going on in this game.

Both subreddits of the Feds kept posing memes about how they would woop our asses for over 2 weeks before they got disciplined.
I doubt it was a mistake or a false flag.
Hardly. I actually admire your hard work. It's finding out about the cemeteries in the Mahon closet that got myself and my colleagues opposing Mahon.
I understand. I just can't let the Mahon wrongs go. And to think we actually did humanitarian missions in Mahon space too. :-/

From 30:26 for the change in the number of Alliance Controlled systems as at Jan 3303.
Here's the TL;DR:
I love that he has Red Green Blue and Purple, but none of the colours are right for the power.
For all the talk of how we should flip more bubbles to corporate to help Mahon.
The fact is that there are just not that many Alliance factions. And only SOME of those are corporates.
We started with around 230 systems (1.17% x 19500) and we hope to be at 700 by the drop of 2.4
So the Alliance has gained around 470 systems.
But this is nothing compared to the other superpowers.
Empire 5183 (lost 25 systems)
Feds 6222 (lost 280 systems)
With more than 400 Player minor factions added in game (and the majority of those independent), you see that the Alliance is doing about as well as it can, given its starting position.

That's a good pace despite the summer slowing things down. I wonder if it will hit 400 before the end of the season.
Lol. Well, if it does, myself and my closest cohorts will be crewing my Polaris Corvette in Star Citizen. If there is no longer a player base that works against the TRUE evil in the galaxy, then this game really isn't worth playing anymore.
So there's a goal to get rid of us. ;-)
Until then, get used to LOCKDOWN, BUST, CIVIL UNREST, and anything else I come up with until those Federal systems are free of the Mahon regime!

is actually: "Lets kick the little guy, because he's more organised and efficient than us."

I still have no idea what it is you think you're achieving in terms of PowerPlay. As far as I can tell it's nothing at all. I'm pretty sure this particular thread is far better suited for a BGS forums, because so far nothing in this thread deal with PowerPlay other than as a geographical market.
