Newcomer / Intro Just how paranoid do I need to be about reputation?

If you are just trading and doing BB missions for the money, then don't worry about it. Now, if you are working in the Lugh system, like a lot of us are, then you want to worry about a particular faction to support.
Failing missions, getting caught with illegal goods, etc. hurt your rep. It is easier to loose rep than to regain it when it comes to breaking the law.

Basically there are 3 Main Factions: Federation, Empire and Alliance. Below that are Sub Factions, which support one of the Main Factions. There are also Independent systems that are just out for themselves, choosing to support no Main Faction.
To the far right of each mission listed on the Bulletin Board there's usually the name of the mission provider (usually a Sub Faction) . There's a number of ways to find out what Main Faction the Sub Faction supports (if they support any at all). That information can be found in the system map by hovering over the station/outpost and looking to the information on the left panel. You can also look to your right panel, under the reputation and factions in the system you're in. There will be a symbol of one of the three Main Factions next to the Sub Factions listed.
