Keyboard support support arrives 14th November. Will FDev support it?

I merely mentioned Voice Attack as there seems to be a raft of Xbox players imagining having a KB/M will be the Great Equaliser between Xbox and PC in the coming era of cross play.

Voice Attack isn't the new greatest thing for PC gamers either...it's been well established for many years and works in any and all games without the need for prior support...it reads or mimics keybinds so all that's required is a keyboard and a microphone. Hell...I even use it for basic Windows commands like copy/paste/move/delete or opening browsers, playing music, opening certain web pages, launching games....

It's not like the Xbox doesn't have that function already built in...since you can ask Cortana to take screenshots...record that etc...but Microsoft simply doesn't see the potential...or doesn't want to allow it... in widening that support to include controlling certain basic game functions.

Just imagine asking Cortana to lower your landing gear in E-D if you will...instead of just recording footage of you boosting into the back of a station :)

Many PC gamers also use eye/head tracking hardware, VR rigs and specialised game controllers like the Logitech G13 as well as a whole truckload of fancy HOTAS hardware. I have a keyboard with programmable gaming macro controls built in...as do many PC gamers..

I use all of these tools in practically every game I own on PC from the single player games like AC Odyssey to Tomb Raider et al to the multiplayer GR Wildlands, Battlefield V, ARMA 3, E-D, Star Citizen...many others.

So KB/M control isn't that much of an equaliser at all...is it?

I'm also an Xbox gamer...so not just some random Master Race dude popping in with no knowledge of how an Xbox works. ;)

I'm not sure people are asking for cross play all I see are people wanting to be able to use keyboard like pc players now that microsoft has enabled it on xbox. To me it just makes sense to be able to use keyboard and play the game however one chooses me if I had my way I would play on my ps4 using hotas keyboard and psvr but alas this is also lacking inbthe console version. So I will stick to my Xbox one x and keep my fingers crossed for keyboard entitlement.

I don't really have an issue with Xbox players having the tools...after all, I waited for 7 years for it to happen on Xbox already. Nor am I guilty of many of the Master Race 'console-isms' having had those 7 years on Xbox.

I keep reading in various outlets however that some Xbox gamers think the keyboard and mouse support will bring some sort of parity with PC gamers in an FPS competitive sense, assuming crossplay becomes a thing...which isn't really the case.

As for flexing...nah, too old and don't play enough multiplayer games to even suggest it. I like the proper games with stories and characters better :)

As CMDR MRMAURICE wrote, not at all. Is not about being in parity, feeling superior, or any of those things. Is about choice. I already use a HOTAS, so in theory does that make me better than someone with a gamepad?
I can tell you on my PC account I mostly use a gamepad. I've tried keyboard and mouse and was at it. However, a keyboard (and by extension a button box, which is really what I want to use) allows me to 1) add certain binds to it for ease of access and; 2) make it more immersive as if I'm on a "real" cockpit.

Most of my games on PC I use my Xbox elite controller with the exception of my many flight sims (and E-D)...muscle memory from 7 years on Xbox wins over me looking down to see what keys I'm pressing on the keyboard. Battlefield V with a mouse/KB? a whole lot of me getting shot in the face through sausage finger syndrome... I default to the controller and can always hold my own on the leaderboard... years of practise, muscle memory and familiarity wins out over fancy toolset every time :)

The only games I'm forced to use M/KB due to complexity or no controller support are ARMA 3 and Hellion. ARMA has controller support and works well but complexity means taking the hands off the controller to use combined keyboard inputs...not ideal.

I sometimes use the Logitech G13 for ARMA and other FPS games which has an analogue thumb stick for the WASD movement similar to the Xbox controller, programmable macro buttons for combined keybindings and use the mouse for headlook....my Tobii eyetracker comes into it's own in ARMA. The flying bits of ARMA like the helicopters and aircraft, I use the HOTAS...same as E-D, purely for familiarity and immersive purposes rather than competitive. I tried flying E-D with my controller and found it nigh on impossible, even after using it for over 2 years flying E-D on Xbox.

Hellion has no controller support at all and is a dedicated M/KB game.

All in all, I prefer using the Xbox controller over all others apart from the HOTAS for supported games...for the above reasons. The other fancy toys...simply because being primarily a PC gamer these days, I have the option to use them...and I'm all for options... but I'm still way more comfortable with a controller for anything that isn't flying.

And thats fine. I prefer to use a controller as well, no one is suggesting you can't. But some people would like to use a keyboard as well. Which you keep missing that point. Xbox have added support and now its up to the Dev's to use it. Elite seems a fitting game to use it for. You don't have to, no one is forcing you, but in the grand scheme of things would it hurt? No, not at all. This game is made for ALL of us, you seem to be fixated on what "you" use and want.

Why are you lecturing at me when I obviously agree with you...you're not a school teacher by profession by any chance are you?

Forget the mouse, give me keyboard keybinds.
I could map my controller to perfection if the keyboard takes up the slack with all the other binds. Bring it. Make it happen.

I agree whole heartedly with this. I would love to be able to have all essential key bindings on the pad and everything else on the keyboard.

Very much this.

What I don't want to see is an enlargement of what already happened to HOTAS v controller, that it becomes an exclusive choice between the modes of input. What I want to see is the ability to pick bindings from the keyboard AND the hotas AND the controller all at the same time. We used to do the latter two simultaneously, then 3.0 came and made it exclusive-or. A repeat of that by adding K&M as merely a third exclusive-use option will be a grievous disappointment.

You should want mouse support for galaxy map and menus...
Just watch a PC user video and how fast they can access a single star system on galaxy map...

No waiting for the dam Circle to finaly sit over the planet line you want, just put the super high speed DPI mouse cursor Directly over the system and single click...
Console versions are mind numbingly slow...
Never mind the the number of d-pad moves required for the Menus vs mouse scroll and click...

After the joy of using mouse for menus in Warframe and fortnite controller interface menu will stink and are so slow...
Just like using the controller for the frontier web store is rubbish... ( edge is not getting USB mouse it will still be blocked )

Fdev need to read this.

I do have to ask, why not move to PC?

I really do not understand the desires to have PC controls if purposely buying a console for games like this knowing full well playing on PC is going to over far more user options.

And regardless what does and doesn't occur in terms of anything outside of a gamepade and the T Flight HOTAS One, there is 0 logic for a developer to add what PC has when you can already buy for PC during their sale (which is really cheap) and transfer all your assets over.

Choice? Xbox have added mouse and keyboard support. It's now up to the dev's to implement it. Why should people have to buy a PC just to use a keyboard and mouse? Funny because I purchased an xbox controller for my PC because... choice. This whole thread has nothing to do with that. Xbox have added it, OP is asking if FDev are going to utilise it. Jeez.

I have a PC and xbox. I still wouldn't mind using a keyboard on my xbox, especially for Elite.

No I am not :p And I must have misunderstood your point, for which I apologize.

My snarky and ill tempered reply wasn't directed at your post, but thank you...I think MrMaurice was the unfortunate recipient of my lack of coffee induced hysteria.

We all have off days :)

So most know that that razer K&M is going to be a Rip off with a microsoft tax but the razer release date will be linked to when the K&M support in games leaves Insider only and becomes Full public with out the insider firmware..
Any one actualy seen a REAL retail site and not a nobody shop (aka microsoft store ) with an Actual release date yet for the K&M bundle...

Games developers can use the ITS beta excuse while its BETA... when its not beta that excuse needs to end and every FPS, RTS and cockpit game developer will have to change it to "we don't want to add key mapping in game to keyboard"...
" no go away "...

So Xbox is adding official keyboard support on the 14th of November (next week).
Is FDev finally adding support for it on the game? (I say finally, because it was already possible to do so, as Project Cars 2 has showed for over a year).

Xbox One mouse and keyboard support arrives November 14th

I believe they stated they would look into it.
However not knowing how they implement the keyboard and mouse, it is difficult to say how it might affect games.
The main thing is probably compatibility, though I would suspect that any mouse and keyboard that can work on linux would work on xbox, though yeah 'advanced' features such as macro's that keyboards have and such aren't likely to work.
