Krait Mk. II, it's now a Python analog

One downside it will have is some combat blindspots because of the strange placing of the cockpit. But it will be great for flying around planets.

Just to be clear, I don't need a ship that is better than every other ship. I just hope they don't feel the need to include poison pill weaknesses just to make Python fans happy.

It's ok if a ship is a sight upgrade. The T10 was an upgrade. The solution for balance was to retrofit the T9 with more hull and more cargo and slightly better jump range. That's the kind of new ship integration I can get behind ;)

Really I wish they could just add an SLF to the Python.

This, pretty much. The Python is such a good all-rounder that it doesn't really have a competitor in the "one ship for everything" category. If the Krait challnges or even approaches its versatility, it'll bring some welcome diversity to the end-game medium ship category.

Personally, I'm hoping for better performance than the Python and slightly less internal space in exchange for an SLF, without too many baked-in drawbacks (although I can see a smaller fuel tank or fewer guns happening). Whatever they showcase tonight though, I'm already in love with the hull; it looked good in the pre-renders, but the video sold it for me completely. Fingers crossed for its viability! [up]

The krait look like the cobra and vulture had a baby. Another wedge in space. How exciting...........

To be fair, ED's collection of wedge and arrowhead-shaped ships is in keeping with the general look of the Elite universe; check out some of the original designs from 1984 onwards.

Yeah, I understand that, and the constrictions of ship design due to the shape of the mail slot, but it just gets.....stale. *shrug*

I hear that. I quite like the basic polygonal aesthetic, but not everyone is a fan. Some more diversity could indeed be good, especially for Empire ships - the faction that most breaks with Elite's polygon vessel design.

They already have spacelegs animation!!!
Going up with lift, walking on bridge, all lights turning on, then when you seat panels turning up...
I WANT SPACELEGS !!!

That's all just pre-render CG.

I also found it humorous that the Pilot entered his ship through the emergency maintenance hatch on the back of the ship. All ships are required to have them back there for emergencies; can't use it when the engines are powered or you'll get cooked. The main entrance is the stairway on the front landing gear of most ships, or a concealed hatch on the underside for small craft (e.g Sidewinder). But if the pilot went through the front, we would've know exactly what the ship was. So he goes through the emergency back door to build suspense. [haha]

Cool looking ship, though.

Or maybe they haven't got the 'walking up a flight of steps' convincing enough yet, so the elevator was easier.

The interest in the Krait just goes to show that lots of people have been wanting a non-combat focused ship for ages. I think we would get the same enthusiasm for an Imperial Explorer. Hint hint FDev.

Any takers on the cost? I heard it was going to be 15 Billion. Just kidding. I bet if you look real hard it's in the game now. At some off beat Alliance location/ exploited system. lol
I just hope it has a jump range to finally compete with the Anaconda. It looks like it would make a beautiful explorer vessel.

So far, I'm pretty surprised. I wasn't expecting them to release a Python rival. I was, instead, expecting a major Python nerfing, or buffing of other ships around its class, like the much needed buff for the Clipper...the game's once best ship...like back in 2014, before it received a major shield nerf. They could easily nerf the Python by doing a Chieftain thing and turning one or two of its slots into Military slots. That's the only thing that makes the Chieftain useless in terms of it being anything but a fighter. Too many military slots. If the Chieftain had 1 military slot and the rest general slots it would be a VERY good ship.

Of course, the redacted part in the pre-3.1 announcement could simply be "and we nerfed the Python" :D
Nooooo! I love my Python!!! Even though it's in Colonia, right now lol, and I'm in the bubble, working on Fed rank. Makes me sad to have a virtually grade 5 Python so far away

I hear you. I'm out at the other end, north of Colonia, and a long way from my well-engineered multi-purpose Python.

We'll see. I am a little bit worried about the two front "pylons" above the cockpit limiting visuality to the upper left/right.

Is the Chieftain really the first one, though? I find the Vulture has a very VR-friendly cockpit view as well. (Until I applied those bumpers, that is. But I willingly sacrificed usability for style ...)

Vulture is definitely good in terms of upper visibility, and the dashboard is nice and low, but you can't really look BELOW you like you can on a Lakon design.

I spend most of my time in an Anaconda, Python, or Corvette - and all of those suffer in VR because if you look up you see the roof. The Chieftain has low sills to the sides and a huge glass roof, bested only by the T-10, I think. The Krait may rival the T-10 in terms of letting you look down in combat.

I don't think side visibility matters too much - first of all, you rarely yaw in combat, it's all about rolling to use the pitch instead - and secondly, having some ship blocking your view adds a bit of character to it.

Well, if they still want to do the Imperial Explorer the way it was handled in the EDRPG (which was under Michael Brookes, one of the ED devs), then we're in for a wait. It's a huge class ship, like the Boa, and can't dock like our other ships. Also, I'm not sure why anyone would want to fly it, since it carries all the equipment to setup a small colony at its destination. It would also cost a lot credits, as all the huge ships core components are size 8.

It would be nice if they made an "Imperial 'Light' Explorer" that was only a large class ship and had the traditional Gutamaya look. That would be neat.

Maybe. Even if they did, the camera angle would be awkward. Where as the elevator to the back door, and then going in, is straight line and great for a camera shot.

I'm sure the main concern, though, was to go in that way so as to conceal the ship for suspense. Wouldn't want to ruin that shot of the exterior light revealing "Krait Mk II" stamped on the outside.;)

Historically, FD have paid a *lot* of attention to what is placed in the trailer. Not idly do the leaves of Lord Braben fall...

Like the suspicious panel at the back of the Krait that looks like a crew station?
It's got the ship schematics, and what looks like pip energy bars? Certainly more detailed than status panels in other ships, and you'd need to walk (space leg) up to it, as no chair.
