The attention to detail is amazing in ED.
I had equipped a certain fire group. Leaving one of my hard points empty/unassigned.
The gaping hole when I equipped the particular load out started depleting my oxygen supply.
I know not to do that again.

You can manage power in the Modules tab on your right.
Most people who are running tight on power lower the Cargo Hatch, Fuel Scoop, FSD Interdictor and FSDs to lower power priority so that they deactivate first to leave power for the other modules when you deploy your hardpoints.

As sam445 pointed out...not because you left a hole in your loadout but your loadout was taking too much power and shut down you life support. When buying components for your ship keep an eye on the power draw when deployed in the info panel to your to right. If it goes red it means the loadout is taking more power than your current powerplant can supply.
