Legacy Modules had Experimental Effects?!

I've spent the last couple of days trying to "tidy up" my Vulture, which was a bit of a tatty mix of legacy modules and missing parts.
To cut a long story short, it was causing headaches because even thought I thought I'd replaced all the legacy parts, it still wasn't working out as it should.

I finally realised something was wrong when I noticed that it has a G5 Overcharged MC with the Corrosive XFX fitted and yet MCs weren't showing up on my list of possible remote-engineering options.

Transferred it to Broo tarquin's base and, sure enough, the MC was a legacy mod'.

This had me a bit confused because I'd completely forgotten that it was possible to apply an XFX under the old system (just to weapons, IIRC), either by chance or by "paying" in reduced engineer-access levels.
Up until now, I've always looked at my modules and if they've got an XFX applied I've assumed they're engineered under the new system.

So, yeah.
Be aware that weapons with an XFX might still be legacy modules.
