Less than 5k cmdrs logging in now.

I have little interest in new ships. Either...

a) they're better than something we already have (e.g. a Python with a fighter bay, a Corvette with even more hardpoints, T9 with another size 7 hold) in which case the ship they replace immediately becomes obsolete and the game becomes easier.

b) they're no better than something we already have in which case they're pointless.
I'd like to see some new ships purely for the aesthetics, as I hope any additions will be nicely balanced or at the least fill a niche (although I can't readily think of any anymore).

When people say 'new ships' I immediately think of the Clipper. It's all right for core mining, which is the only reason I have one, but really I was just trying to find a role for it.

I only recently bought the three Fed ships (the ones that look like clothes irons) and have yet to find a use for any of them.

The Crusader does have a role now, because it's the only 4-seater in Medium. Unfortunately all the military compartments are useless on a ground ship, as they can't be used to hold SRVs.

What a surprise, because that's a bunch of prejudiced and poorly argumented gibberish if I ever read any.
Call it whatever you want, it's still true. All of that happened, Odyssey launched completely broken and the FPS gameplay isn't good. Do you play FPS games? If so, what are you comparing Odyssey to? Because I rack it up against the whole list that I play.

- Half-Life
- Unreal Tournament
- Battlefield
- Battlefront
- CoD
- Fortnite
- Rust
- DayZ
- Planetside 2
- Wolfenstein
- 7 days to die
- Killing floor
- CS:GO
- Valorant
- Apex Legends
- Borderlands

^ Odyssey FPS gameplay ain't even half as good as any of those. Not even close. Like at all.

Maybe you stick to one genre for whatever reason, but plenty of people enjoy multiple genres in no particular order and see no reason why one would exclude the other.
I do to, as long as they work and are good. Mixing genres is innovative and great if you do it right. Most popular and successful game in the world is a mix between third-person-shooting, battle royale and building.

Any limitations now exposed of the Cobra Engine would've been exposed in due time anyway, even if they solely focused on "space simulation".
And they certainly got exposed, didn't they.

And who are these mysterious fanboys who are surrepticiously directing FDev?
That's a rhetorical question if I ever saw one. I'm not referring to individuals, I'm referring to a feedback structure that's very common across the industry.
Community managers cannot compile feedback from thousands or millions of clients, that's bonkers and impossible. There's usually always a select group that gives them feedback and if structured correctly, then it's from all playstyles and all parts of the game. If not, well... I mentioned the outcomes in the OP.

Basically everybody who doesn't share your opinion?
If it helps you sleep at night, sure.
It's always better to do that than look at the negative reviews and plummeting active player count. Which is the concern of the OP in this thread. All I did was explain the situation, tell him not to worry and prioritize above all just having fun.

Hang on, gotta google a quote... it's from that dude from MythBusters.

Ah, got it, Adam Savage "I reject your reality and substitute my own". Kinda fitting for you, don't you think? :D

Some fab stuff here.
Wow.
2 camps
One is openminded kinda casual towards elites content/gameplay.
The other, niche. As elite was niche. Was it not? A bunch of tech savvy cmdrs of varying academia, to those who just loved the ⚫
Loners, me again, soloists.
And it's this clique of cmdrs numbering in the 10s of 1000s, that felt most betrayed by what transpired. Again myself included.
It's dark....really dark. Still is! Can't see a thing most of the time lol.
But.... for me, the on foot which I hated on paper on the clips, so on, just ticked a box.
All of a sudden I'm sucked in.
The game looks nice in VR. I've a nice headset too so it's even nicer.
And that's why I play elite. Because flying by my carrier in my imp eagle, is a glorious thing...specially if parked near a blue star...omg°!
Looks stunning. I just stop inside that tiny cockpit. And admire what's gotta be one of the most amazing views ever, in a game. 40 years a gamer and nothing compares.

But that could change. The other game is getting better. Course for me I won't partake till full release.
And l don't feel I'm outdoing myself. Elite is a good game make no mistake.
But it needs fixing. More content. And a narrative. A story.
Suck us in fdev!

It's good since Odyssey FPS doesn't have pvp ranks neither

I wouldn't say "good", I would say... "weird". Because if it was to attract even some of the FPS crowd, that audience is massively dominated by players that want PvP.
It's just a strange marketing decision as when you merge or add a new genre to a game, it's usually to attract a new audience.

I get that this was to satisfy popular demand by the current audience... I just don't understand why not broaden it in the process. But I suppose if you're not into PvP, why would you think to include PvP.

It kinda reminds of Star Fighters in Star Wars: The Old Republic. They added space ship battles, but it was so bare bone and lackluster that nobody played it. Then BioWare/EA said that they were cutting development on the feature because "players didn't like it".

Kinda like a Chef not getting why customers wont come to his restaurant to eat raw chicken 🤪

I don't know. I also play other competitive FPS with ranks / sr / elo. I think the strength of Elite is that it doesn't rely on that. The real hardcore players come for the challenge, not the ranks.

Edit : there were many good PvP players at the last 3 CGs.

I'm about to venture into goid bashing.
3 of us in our wing. And we're looking forward to a huge game loop.
We got credits weps unlocked yada yada. We're good to go.. we'll be out In the witchhead or coalsack.
Oh yeah forgot to mention.
Been a week or so down there in open cmdrs all over the place coming n going...and not one gank! Not one interdiction.
I'm clean atm scrubbed up special I did. Wanna make a solo goid basher one day.
Nice bunch these folks.

I've been keeping an eye on Elite's stats the last few weeks and it does appear that player numbers are starting to slump a bit again during the past few days. I'm not surprised. The game recently hit a 7K high we haven't seen in months, something that was no doubt due to the largely well-received Update 8 + Stutter Fix, as well as a popular CG. That CG is now concluded, and the people who came back to check out Update 8 have wandered off again until the next update comes along. I expect this seesawing of numbers to continue until EDO is fully optimized on PC and work begins on a console release (one will lead to the other). FDev is getting closer to that finish line but we aren't there yet (maybe January/February?).

Once the game is well-optimized, I think EDO is poised to become the next comeback kid like NMS. After putting in twenty-odd hours in EDO, I was surprised to see how wrong the naysayers are. EDO has a lot of really good content that has enhanced the game in a variety of ways. Now, that is not to see that there are no rough edges that need to be smoothed out, but what FDev has added to the Elite experience is pretty darn fun. I was even surprised at how much I came to like the on-foot combat. While I do hate the inclusion of personal shields (a clumsy gameplay idea at best), the core shooter experience is solid (if unremarkable) and the stealth gameplay is a lot of fun with tense moments!

I am confident that a lot of the people we lost to the bungled launch of EDO will eventually come back as long as FDev gets the game running as well as it should. There is a lot of fun (and immersive!) features in EDO and a ton of potential for more to be added as they iterate on the formula. I think the on-foot stuff (concourses and planetary settlements) will prove nearly irresistible to machinima creators (Elite has had some of the best storytellers in this regard). (y)

But it all hinges on a well-optimized game. You have to get this right FDev. It is the sine quo non for the expansion's success.

I'm not arguing semantics.
The fact is their isn't alot of cmdrs playing elite anymore.
Because.... well we all know why.
And yes steam figures are an accurate reflection of logins. Perhaps not all. But most I would argue.
Nah, I have 4 accounts and rarely play on the Steam one. I have two free Epic ones, which most CMDRs have at least one of.

I wanna believe it!!@ really! But that other game beckons!!
I'm holding out cos I pray I'm wrong..truly
FYI, I built my current computer a few years back to meet the then-current specs for that "other game."
I may play it, too, when it gets released. Let me know when it moves from Alpha to Beta and then release.

I'm not sure why that's a relevant argument. There are some that say ED's spaceship game is not as good as many other games (most of those are SC backers ;)), they're wrong of course ( :p ) but even if they were right does that mean we should just stop playing Horizons and pack it up?

None of those games above have any spaceship game in a 1:1 galaxy. Does that mean they are crappy FPSs (es? esi?) because ED does something better?

ED is it's own thing, it does a bit of everything even if it's not the best at all of it and there is nothing else like it imo. And that's alright.

I think I got SC early in, and then saw how the release simply isn’t likely in my adult lifetime. The problem with broadening a scope too wide like they’re doing results in support personnel spread wayyyyy too thin.

Now forget about SC. I believe ED has the game mechanics, thrills and general fun than any other game I’ve played. And I’m a long time EVE player, and some other FPS games. This game just hits that “itch” that nothing else can. I log off, having genuinely enjoyed whatever I did - whether exploration, space-bus-driving, mining, missions, etc. It is just FUN.

I’ll also share my analogy that to me is more true to what Odyssey is, and will be for ED for future iterations. Odyssey is the ARMA experience to ED. Space-realism simulation on foot. Not Call of Duty. And people who expected CoD in space were either mid-informed or weren’t paying attention. The meat and potatoes of ED is flying space ships. Odyssey builds on that with ground stuff (and hopefully soon for EVA and boarding vessels - the thought of walking outside my ship in space is enough to tempt me sign up to donate monthly to Frontier).
