If you cast your mind back to a couple of weeks back when Michael first started speaking out about how the system works you will remember that he made mention of 'wars' and 'civil wars'. He seemed to imply there was a difference between the two. The way I see it is that a civil war is an internal struggle. An internal spat with minor powers vying for control, the result being one will become dominant and maybe increase their territory so to speak.
Lockdown has kicked in because there was a huge influx for weapons brought into the system for CSG and huge amounts of 'fuel the arts of war', 'Lugh needs covert help' and 'Sticks and stones and semi automatics' missions. These in turn generate lockdown.
Now if you consider that it is inevitable that a lockdown will ensue if you try to encourage war and that the result being that you generate checkpoints which can be easily avoided while in supercruise since you actually have to actively jump into them of your own accord and that they do not actually do anything or serve any purpose other than should they find that you are hostile attack you it begs the question - Why did the programmers bother to program them into the game at all?
Now also consider that if their purpose is to increase the actual security of the system would it not make more sense to have increased police interdiction by maybe 10 times instead?
For this reason it makes sense to me that the purpose (and only purpose) of these checkpoints being programmed into the game is for players to actively attack them and destroy them.
Forget about what we know about civil war for one second and consider that what is actually happening is:
1) We have brought in weapons in huge numbers
2) LFE (a Federal backed faction) has lost serious face and is now challenged for control.
3) Tension has hit cresendo levels and now the Federal Navy has arrived to lockdown the situation.
4) The average Joe in the street has been ready to rebel but now he is not so sure with all these police around.
5) a war tithers on the brink and could go either way...
This is where we and these checkpoints come in...
Michael confirmed our suspicions about bounty hunting while we discussed possible ways to decrease lockdown. Sure that makes perfect sense. If tension has reached fever pitch then to destroy the bands of rogue CSG ships in the system would reduce that tension and maybe all the police would go home and we could get back to normal so a civil war could break out... But what if there is another situation going on here? What if lockdown is the inevitable result of bringing in massive amounts of weaponry and inspiring finacial stability and a real viable alternative for the population?
Now I come back to these checkpoints again, Their only real purpose is to attack you should you enter them and be hostile to LFE therefore their only real function (in game design terms) is to insight a fight. It is possible that by destroying enough of these you will actually take this to the next level where you give the population confidence to rebel and an actual real war will begin where the entire system is at stake instead of a single station. Like the 'wars' Michael hinted at...
If this is not how the system works then I suggest to you Michael and FD that maybe you should consider that it should. A huge amount of work is required to get this far and if enough players are willing to do so, then maybe such events should be possible. When you consider the time and effort required in a gaming sense such wars should be possible to incite if your goal is to keep players interested for long enough to see the job done. Not everyone would be as willing as us lot to do what is required. This aspect of the game is where I believe this game shines and the more that can be done to perfect this will ultimately be the reason people will remember this game in years to come
Personally I believe this is actually how this works already.
We need to decide if we are going to pursue this course of action or reduce security by doing LFE's dirty work for them. We cannot do both as they are polar opposites. So lets discuss this now and come to a decision quickly.
