Yeah it's a marketing tool plain and simple. The whole point is to convince people of a scarcity and let their speculation take hold of their wallets with regards to the 'what if it goes up in price' in the future...
To me the speculation as to what the cost will provide outweighs that.
That, and I feel FD have put minimal effort into developing a base game platform from which to nickel and dime their expansions.

FD will continue to add to base game trough developing content for expansions. If skeptical, wait when they do that.

Read the Lifetime pack terms carefully. it says lifetime of Elite Dangerous. Do you know that frontier trademarked the Elite Deadly title, back in Feb this year?

That could just be protection of the brand. I work for a company that has a simple name that describes what we do and we have been in business for nearly 30 years, over the last five or so years loads of new companies have sprung up in the area with variations on our name and causing a lot of confusion with the customers. All because we didn't trademark our name at the begining and now it is considered too generic to trademark. Moral being if you have a brand name protect it and ALL it variations right from the start otherwise somebody will try and copy what you do and damage your brand.

Does Lifetime Pass Apply to Console Editions?

Greetings,

I was debating springing for the lifetime pass. Does that include the console editions? I am keenly interested in the game on PS4. I am playing it on a Mac right now (Im allergic to Windows PCs :) ) but I would prefer the console experience, especially since the controls in PC are a little hard to use and wee a frustration until I plugged in my dual shock.

Anyway, a prompt response would be appreciated.

On the store page for the LEP, it states:

System Requirements Horizons

Please Note: This version of Elite Dangerous: Horizons is for PC use ONLY

Windows hardware specification:
•To Be Announced
•Network Broadband Internet Connection
•A Graphics Card That Fully Supports DirectX11 Or Greater - Shader Model 5.0 Or Greater

There are no regional restrictions, although the game may not be localised into your language.

From this it would seem that the LEP only applies to the PC currently.

No announcement on Horizons for Xbox One has yet been made to my knowledge, much less a confirmed PS4 release of either the core game or Horizons.

At the moment, the Horizon seems closed for MAC / XB1 / PS4. But do not lose hope because Frontier always tries to satisfy the possible largest number. And one day the Horizon clears up

They also didn't say that last year.

Pecisk, you're giving FD White Knighting a bad rep. They did say that you know they did.

I don't know between these two threads and this video I'd say we know quite a bit now, at least of what will be in Horizons at the start if not the middle/end of the season:

But you're right without seeing any gameplay/screenshots it's quite a bit of wonga to cough up.

Those lists of things doesn't actually tell you what you will get on release or how that part of the game will play.

I backed the original game at Beta (happy I did btw) but I had the benefit of watching gameplay videos to help me with that decision - there is nothing to see and a list of things is just not going to do it for me. They need to release some beta gameplay footage before I commit (and I think I will).

I do know however that any video they release will be met with howls of derision from a section of the ED audience who will be quick to point out all that is missing so it's understandable that they haven't yet.

The point still stands however, I need to see it before I buy it - I do this for every game purchase I make.

Also as a beta backer and from knowing the kick starter history of the game, FD and lists of things have a rather chequered history.

As far as a lifetime pass....it's just not going to happen, I may end up paying more over time but I'd rather do that and spread the cost then dump £130 on a development plan I can't see.

If I own ED on Steam, then Purchase ED:Lifetime Pass from Store, How do I start the game? Steam or FD Store Version?

So, I want to buy that FD: Lifetime Pass, but I bought Elite Dangerous using my Steam account. If I buy the Lifetime Pass now, and that would give me access to the current Beta, how would that work as far as starting the Client? Do I still start the game from Steam, or do I have to reinstall the game from the FD Lifetime Purchase and then wait for the Steam Code to be available after Horizons is released? Would I even have to download the game from the store after buying the Lifetime Pass? Otherwise, is it all simply tied into my log in so I can start the client either way?

Little help... Thanks!

To play beta, you need to login into the launcher with the email you bought the lifetime pass. If the email from steam is different, there would be a entire new game. Try contact support if its necessary to merge if possible.

I had the same question. I own Elite on Steam. I bought the lifetime expansion pass. I am able to play the CQC beta on my steam launcher. Everything just works.
Jump in, It worked for me.

So it is associated to my account then, that works. So, if I buy the lifetime pass while logged into my existing account, the launcher will prompt me to download the beta, and I don't have to worry about the launcher updating outside of the program in Steam?

That is what happened for me. I did at one point (before the beta was live) generate a steam key. Don't know if that was necessary. When the beta went live, I logged in that day and steam automatically updated and the CQC beta was there ready to download from my steam-launched Elite.
To be clear: I've never launched Elite from anything but steam. Never a stand-alone launcher. And I have access to the CQC beta.

You will find, may be something in this thread ---- https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=172800

I appreciate the link, I did already read that thread. I went to the Store, logged into my account, the completed the purchase; and after starting the Client, the download for the CQC was available. So, at least for Season 1, the Beta will be available through the existing Client, currently and for any future Beta. I hope that the Horizon release is as simple and intuitive. Hopefully, that will not be a separate issue altogether.

Thanks everyone for your help, +1 Rep all around.

Will Elite Dangerous: Horizons be coming to Steam? Yes, before the end of the year. For now it will only be available through the Frontier Store. Much like before, If you buy Elite Dangerous: Horizons from the Frontier store you will have the option to generate a Steam code when it arrives on that platform. Frontier

With the lifetime pass, everything should be transparent, I think
