If you don't like the price, don't buy it. That is literally all it comes down to. They offer you a product. They do not kick your shopping cart over, grab your wallet and hold it above your head trying to force this item on you.

That is the problem I will not , the question is how many are like me? If people fail to pay up in sufficient numbers the lifetime expansion pack is not good for long. I hope FD know what they are doing

[silly words]
That's what I'm talking about. A lifetime pass price should remain the same for everyone. But with the current price model, new players get the same products cheaper than existing players.

As I understand, the price of the lifetime pass is the same for everyone. You can buy the lifetime pass for $200 now, or you could have bought it for $200 back then.
.
Buying something included in the lifetime pass individually should have no affect on its price in my eyes, which was the point of the analogy that you quoted. Perhaps age was a bad example:
You can buy a year's worth of rice for $60.
You can buy a lifetime worth of rice for $200.
Buying the year's worth before hand does not and should not affect the price of the lifetime's worth.
Such is the nature of such a product.
.
Were it a lifetime pass upgrade, my thoughts would be different.

Alright, but the lifetime pass wasn't available for the last months. And we had to believe that it won't ever come back. What should we have done back in February? How had I the same chances and prices than a new player has today?

And please stop your personal attacks, I won't react to that kind of discussion.

You're totally missing the point of the OP, try again.

Also, I bought the lifetime expansion pass last year for $50, so try again on that point too.

Firstly, I don't really feel that pre-beta/kickstarter/whatever the heck stuff is within the context of this thread.
.
I don't think I'm totally missing the point of the OP. I believe the point of the OP is that they think that someone who doesn't yet own the game is in reality paying less for the lifetime pass. I do not agree with this line of thought. It would be different if I were buying a pack of 10 seasons. If I had bought one yesterday for $1, then I bought a 10 pack today for $10, then I should have in total 11 cucumbers. This does not align with the idea of a lifetime pass product in my eyes, as we are not buying 10 of a product. We are buying a lifetime subscription to the product. It makes perfect sense that this is a flat rate, in my eyes.
.
I commemorate your effort though *clap clap*

I'm in.....

I have paid for lifetime updates for other programs and it is worth it in the long run. With Elite it takes me so long to advance (which is a good thing for long term play enjoyment) I need to be in it for life.....;)

A new player buying the Lifetime Pass now did not have the opportunity to play the game for the last 9 months. That's what your extra money has paid for.

If a new player buys just Horizons now, they will be unable to play until Horizons is released. As a bonus to new players who buy a pass, they get the next 3 months until Horizons launches included.

OTOH, it would be nice if the LEP discount was more comparable to the Horizons discount. Horizons is 25% off for existing players. The Lifetime Pass is approx. 8% off.

I will most likely not buy the LEP, because while I hope ED will still be going strong for seasons 5+, I don't have sufficient confidence to effectively pre-pay for 4 seasons. (Assuming the seasons' price and pace stays the same, the pass is the price of 4 seasons, and so does not pay off until season 6 in 2020.)

Well, that's a great offer.

It certainly is a great offer, and the more Cmdrs here the better. Cannot fault a good marketing strategy to pull in new blood!

I feel Horizons on launch day would be a far too much of a steep learning curve for a noob, and would put a lot of the new blood into the 'asking for a refund' category after only a few hours play, so at least this way they get a bit of time beforehand to learn the base game and controls before release which I find hard to object to.

That's not true. The LEP gives new players the opportunity to play ED right now.

ED store said:
Play Elite Dangerous today and then play Elite Dangerous: Horizons when it lands Holiday 2015.

You're confusing the LEP with the Horizons offer.

Lifetime Pass vs Buying Books

Last week I bought the hardcover version of "Ghost Fleet: A Novel of the Next World War" for $38.00 CAD. It's a good book, and I got through it in about 10 hours.

The Lifetime Expansion for Elite is $244.00 CAD and will probably provide 1000s of hours of game play. And yet, I'm still debating whether or not to buy it, even though I know it's steal of a deal that will probably average out to 1 cent/hour of eventual game play.

The way the human mind works is really odd, isn't it?

The real question is whether you can commit to 3/4 expansions of elite.

With the pass your basically paying for 3/4 expansions up front and I'm not sure I can confidently say I'll be interested in elite for that long. Odds are I probably will be and might end up paying extra because I didn't go for the lifetime pass - you got to be the judge as to wether you want to commit and make a potential saving with the pass or potentially pay more in the long run by not committing.

Books are less of a commitment much easier decision you can impulse buy them :)

Even if you lose interest, new expansions may spark new interest.

You plan on playing for 24,400 hours?

Libraries are still out there chaps and you can order books you want to read for only a few pennies and return them when you are done and save some trees :)
