I get what you say about using standard names to aid location but I reckon the devs could have allowed for a standard designation plus discoverers chosen name model. After all, I can't see too many folks looking up SYNUEFE AQ-N C23-37 just for a laugh
You KNOW I will have to look that up now, don't you?
Actually, I did see an article the other day, about a carbon star with steam around it, I noted that down to go check it out once I get to the core.

Though, if it was just a standardised name based on the explorer - EG all systems I discover are named Bare-xxxxx (where the X represents the sequential number of the discovery), that would be cool - and only a single approval for all names given to my discoveries. The only issue is, we end up with a similar naming system, where it's just username-number, so we still wouldn't get truly interesting and unique names.
Oh, and I'm not personally concerned about "immersion breakers" for names. Truly creative and funny names would be cool, but I fear it woul dbe too much work for the devs to check each and every one...
Also, double-ups may be an issue. I'm sure there would be a few Earth-likes named "Caprica", for example...
