Diamonds in the sky: Scientists find Jupiter and Saturn are awash in diamonds

A bit off topic but:
I recently learned and was suprised that diamonds aren't really rare at all. The hole trade, blood diamond thing and marketing was really manufactured and only a monopoly and advertising props up the value of diamonds. Before 1950 (or so I think) diamonds weren't special at all compared to other gemstones (Ruby, Emeralds etc.).

Marketing
Marketing has significantly affected the image of diamond as a valuable commodity.
N. W. Ayer & Son, the advertising firm retained by De Beers in the mid-20th century, succeeded in reviving the American diamond market. And the firm created new markets in countries where no diamond tradition had existed before.
