Longtime player N000b at exploration

Alright I finally decided to swallow the frog and go forth into the void. No idea what im doing other than scanning whatever i find. Seeing random points in space and trying to navigate to them. Literally aimless ambling through the black with no external sources for help. How long will it take to get 5 billion credits in cartographic data with this haphazard method?

I scanned a few on my journey to SagA, then to Colonia and the neutron'd back to Jameson. I mostly jumped and honked though. I never got anything near 5 billion. I doubt I got more than 40M.

You won't make such amounts in foreseeable future by just honking and FSSing things. You have to map bodies. Assume an average of 2.5M Cr for every mapped ELW/WW/terraformable HMC/RB and do the maths.

Depending on how much time you devote to it daily/weekly and how efficiently you cherry pick (and map, preferably 1st discovery & 1st mapped bonus included) the valuables, I'd guess somewhere around 3-5 months.

You won't get to 5Bcr (unless you are out for a VERY long time). Don't go expecting to make any unique finds, as you will probably be disappointed. Just be prepared to see beauty when it happens. If you do find anything unusual bookmark it so you can go back, should you choose to do so.

If you have not left make sure you have a mining laser fitted (you will not need a refinery). That way you can mine asteroid belts and planetary rings for materials to allow you to synthesise FSD boosts and create re-loads for the AMFUs or kinetic weapons.

When you are returning make sure (in the Training Missions) to practise landing until you are happy with your ability. That way you are less likely to crash on landing, risking your exploration data.

Li Yong Rui can pay triple for your exploration data, if you have pledge for 4 weeks and reached level 5. Worth the hassle, if you have hundreds of millions of data to sell (and looking for credits).

You won't get filthy rich with Exploration. Usually I make perhaps 200 Million or so and I scan and map a lot and I make ... quite extended trips.
When I go out to explore I usually set myself a target based on real astronomical phenomena that I then write about as part of Aidan's story in his blog.

If you just want to get to Elite I'd follow the road to riches approach and then you can "hook it off the agenda" soon-ish. ;)

I got 1.7b for a trip around the galaxy, and I wasn't hitting everything of value. Also consider the LY bonus, I don't bother but for them who are keen on money it's a nice boost.

10,000 systems visited? That sounds like alot. I think space madness would have me seeing faces in the hyperspace tunnel and chewing on my flight stick by then. You sir are a different breed. How long did it take you to achieve that?

As soon as you get beyond explored space it doesn't super matter how you explore if your aim is to just fondle space things for money. That said if you can see something on a zoomed out galaxy map someone has probably been there.

You can mildly optimise by confining your jumps to the A-K part of the main sequence, they're more likely to have the shiny planet types.

Jump into system, Honk, FSS, then surface map Earthlikes, Waters, Ammonias, and High Metal Terraforming Candidates.

Thanks for the replies guys. Sounds like 5 billion credits would take longer than my sanity will last. Thats ok.
Let me tell you.
If you go into exploration with cr on your mind, it's better to stay at home.
If you go into exploration with scanning everything you find every system, it's better to stay at home.
If you go into exploration with the mindset to not rush and willing to change pace and/or objectives as you go... Go for it cmdr!

Well
Last year i made 260 millions by visiting 600 systems (more than 450 were first discoveries) and mapping less than 40 bodies (cant really remember, but there is a chance they were less than that).
And i mapped only ELW, Ammonia, WaterWorlds and HMC terraformables that were conveniently placed (for example a WW and 2-3 HMC nearby and so on)

Now, if you pledge to LYR for 4 weeks, then you work hard to haul 10000 merits and get Rank5, you will get a 200% bonus for selling data in LYR Systems.

So getting 5 billions means actually getting 2.5 billions.
And in the end it depends on how lucky you are with finding a lot of the juicy stuff that is also decently placed so you dont have to fly 100000 ls to map a planet.
