Lore-Friendly Faster Supercruise Is Now Possible?

Unless I’m having an age related brain-fart, gravity wells used to have a much larger influence on SuperCruise vessels earlier on in the game’s life.

There used to be a modicum of skill involved in doing a fast system traversal, but I think it got nerfed to allow more beeline flying.

You are right that there is a bit of skill in SC. But it's a small one and it does not take long to get the hang of it.

I think that SC mechanics should allow players to take risks to cut corners if they can pull it off skill-wise. Something optional, but that one may enjoy getting into instead of watching the ETA timer go down before setting the throttle to 75%.

I find SC and hyperspace to rate as "mostly boring". Don't get me wrong, SC near planets is cool and does not get old. But the rest of it is bland as a Graham cracker.

SuperCruise is a strange one, there is a little element of skill to getting the best out of it, but that isn't "what meets the eye", many will just see the straightline side of it. However, I do think there should be more opportunity for player agency to make a difference to the outcome, by using skill to increase performance / reduce travel times, hence suggesting slingshots in a previous post. That proposed mechanic still allows supercruise to play as it is just now, some actually prefer to sit at 75% throttle the whole distance, some go parabolic, some use gravity braking, adding slingshot would allow those players to still use there current mode of play, while offering a more nuanced & faster approach that requires a little bit of skill/input to get the most out of it.

I've heard that too - even though I've done (some) PvP and (a little) AX myself.... but these are the same guys that haven't got it through their heads that if you're flying right, anyone deeper in a gravity well than you are cannot catch you, no matter what they or you are flying. I'd much rather make it to my destination without the hassle of getting shot at or the distraction of having to shoot up some other poor sod who's just trying to make a living in this galaxy same as I am. I'd much prefer to not be interdicted even if it costs me a few extra minutes in my journey to my destination. And if I'm better at SC flight than they are, that's how it goes. If not, and if they have the patience to haul me in rather than going after much easier-to-catch meat, well, then we'll see how that bit goes, won't we? I don't CL, I take my honestly-deserved rebuys.... but I don't get all that many of those
