Mamba Speed Fix When??

So the update dropped and as was mentioned and predicted by the Devs they didn’t have time to fix the speed of the Mamba.

Thankfully the heat issue from Beta 3 remains fixed, but it’s still slower than a Krait Phantom and Clipper.

Let’s take a look at the in game description:

“Based on an unreleased racing prototype, the Mamba is one of the fastest ships in production. It can also deliver a lot of punishment, boasting one huge and two large hardpoints. This emphasis on firepower and speed means the ship can hit hard and fast, vanishing before the target has a chance to react. Comparisons to the Fer-de-Lance, also produced by Zorgon Peterson, will be inevitable, but the Mamba is in fact faster in a straight line, while being slightly less maneuverable.”

”one of the fastest ships in production”

Except it isn’t. It’s barely faster than an FDL, Chieftain, Krait MKII, FAS, and so on.

This ship should smoke a Clipper. Half of it is just engines for crying out loud.

A properly built Clipper boosts to 610-615, and its niche is as a Bi Weave Hull Tank with over 3,500 armor and some of the strongest Bi Weaves in the game (7C).

The Mambas niche should be FAST(er), agile, sort of strange Prismatic/Hull Tank hybrid or Bi Weave Hull Tank that boosts to a speed just above the Clipper. That would mean 620-630 with a typically/properly built combat focused and engineered ship. This is regardless of PvP or PvE. IMO combat is combat and meta builds are useful regardless of play style.

Frontier, don’t let us down. Give us the engines with guns you meant to build in the first place! Thanks!

I see a contradiction here - "engine with guns" vs. "hull tank". Choose one, but choose wisely. We already have more than enough hull tanks.

I don't know whether he speed/mass curve is fixed (or what it depends upon), but I could see something that could reach ludicrous speed as long as you keep it below minimum mass, but then drops rapidly for every ton you exceed it. Like a larger iCourier.

Could do with a manoeuvrability buff, imho. It get's outturned by waaaaay too much.

I'll be mothballing it and sticking to my FDL until then.

At first I was against this, but after buying the mamba, engineering it to the hilt and test flying it in combat I really like it despite its flaws. However, it could be something really special if it were a speed demon. Currently, its just another med-sized ship with poor agility. This thing flies like a small, fast conda when it comes to pitch and yaw performance. So it needs the speed to set it apart.

With class 5 thrusters. I don't see it out running anything.

The wiki has this interesting blurb:
"As a redesigned racing ship the Mamba boasts incredible speed, surpassing most other ships and letting it easily hunt down targets or escape from ambushes. This comes at a sizeable cost to manoeuvrability..."

Is this a prediction based on inside knowledge?

Yeeha.
Its all she needs. More speed please, more more more.

Please Fdev, dont mess around with it, just add some speed. Its a great ship.

Well, mine goes 610 boost fully fitted, and that's quite fast for a combat ship I think. DD5 + Drag Drives, ofc.

Thing is, as described, you shouldn't need it to be fully engineered DD5/DD in order to outrun a lame slug. It's supposed to be fast out of the box, but even just A rating the Thruster and D rating everything else (including minimising sizes), it can barely get into the mid 400s.

That's the main issue for me.

It's kind of like proclaiming the Ford RS200 was a "racing prototype" and then discovering that it doesn't do anything better than Vauxhall Astra or VW Golf of the same era.

The Mamba probably should have compromises if we consider it's origins HOWEVER, in practical terms, if it's intended to be a viable alternative for the FdL it needs to be able to compete with the FdL on even terms.

That's not to say it should have the same strengths and weaknesses as the FdL but it should have it's own features which present the player with a viable choice.

Right now, the only reason to fly a Mamba is if you don't actually like the FdL and you're prepared to accept a ship that's objectively worse instead.
And that's not a good reason to choose a ship.
Which makes the effort taken to design and implement it a waste of time.

Sticking with the theme of being a "racing ship", the Mamba should almost DEFINITELY be lighter than the FdL.
Maybe racing in the 34th century also involves inter-system travel, in which case maybe the Mamba should have a larger FSD than the FdL too?
Also following the racing theme, maybe it should use less juice to boost, like the Krait does as well?

In a nutshell, right now the Mamba is a bigger target than the FdL with nothing to compensate the player for that disadvantage.
It needs some advantage of it's own.

Neither is a Ferrari or a Lamborghini.
Take a tank to a battle, and a custom racecar to Monte Carlo
