If you pick up 1 x Lvl5 material, which gives you 3 materials and downgrade half of your materials (rounded up) to the next level down until you reach lvl 1 materials, you will get these quantities :
Lvl 1 : 24
Lvl 2 : 7
Lvl 3 : 4
Lvl 4 : 3
Lvl 5 : 1
That's not bad, 39 materials from 1 pickup, in a full spread of levels!
So it looks like we just need to get the lvl 5's and swap down for loads of materials.
