Meanwhile, in a parallel universe where the sky belongs to no man...

...they continue getting regularly new major updates with new stories, new contents and new stuff to explore. The last one was released a few hours ago.

Thanks to the gods of our universe, we will receive something new in just 6 months! 🎉🎉🎉🎉

.... 🍿🍿🍿
So, what are you still doing here?

Actions speak louder than words.

Like most, I don't think NMS is comparable to Elite for many reasons.

Their story, though, is highly interesting - zero to (negative to) hero and all that.

I don't think NMS will ever pose a genuine threat to the likes of Elite unless its flight model received a significant overhaul. I imagine someday it will, but like along the lines of arcade 'twitch' gameplay rather than flight sim a la Elite. Which is totally fine with me, I enjoy arcadey at time, I enjoy sims at times. I'm very glad for both games...though I have to admit the goodwill with NMS is much greater these days.

I was an original preorder to NMS, I remember the center of the universe after hundreds of jumps and refuels...it has come a very long way. I didn't join Elite until PS4 launch, but I have to wonder:

If I was a LEP holder...and a day 1 NMS player...
Would I have more goodwill for NMS, too?

What I find funny is that both Sean Murray and David Braben over-promised and under-delivered, yet David is considered a saint and Sean a devil, despite the fact that Sean has since fulfilled his promises (and them some) while David, well, I'll let you finish this sentence..

What I really admire about Halo Games is the continued efforts they are putting to improve their game with the release of new content and improvements on a regular basis.

I'm playing both games on and off, and every time I do I'm impressed but in the opposite direction when speaking of new patch release

NMS was far more cultist hype than ED iirc.

It was my very great pleasure to meet David Braben a few times. One night we were coming out of an illegal rave in Southampton, we were both conkered on disco biscuits, I said to him, “Brabbers, why have you let the game become the game it has?”

He turned to me, with that glint in his eye, his roll up dangling out of the corner of his mouth and he said to me, “Well Lozzer me ol mucker, it’s like this, I hate the Elite player base”. We both erupted into laughter. The tears filled our eyes.

The evening was only made better by him getting his driver to slow the Rolls Royce down so we could mockingly throw ARX at the homeless people under the bridge.

And in an even more parallel universe, some people play multiple games and don't perceive gaming communities as "us" and "them"! These people get so many updates! Update number 8 will blow your mind! Single game players HATE them!

To me the vast difference is that Sean knowingly made absolute 100% full lies, then doubled-down, then hid in silence, then complained about people being mean to him. Till this day he never apologized. Thats just weak, and I am not sure why I am supposed to forget that just because NMS later became a fun game. Those two aspects are distinct to me. ED might not have been what people hoped, but if you go back to the KS their actual promises are very, very mild. It is the 'one day I I hope we'll be able to blabla' theorycrafting and dreaming that got people's hope up. He probably shouldn't, but it is miles from using Sony's massive PR platform to knowingly sell to people.

And this is even ignoring the bizarre "Oops, we posted the wrong minimum specs. I'm really sorry if you cant play the game, but no refunds!". No gamer should accept this level of anti-consumerism.

NMS is currently better than I thought it'd become when it launched. ED is currently not as good as I hoped it'd become. The latter might change with Odyssey, or it might not. In the end, both have been easily worth the money to me. As a gamer I don't have to pick a team and boo the other. David is not a saint (and I dont know anyone here who claims it, sounds like a straw man...) and Sean is no devil. But Sean Murray's behavior was morally wrong, and I am not a child that forgives bad behavior because I get a nice toy to play with.

Where I am from that is not an apology. An actual, honest apology 1) explicitly acknowledges specific wrongdoings, 2) provides an unconditional apology without hiding behind external excuses. This is what an apology looks like:"Hi guys and girls. I lied to you all to sell more games, and when I was found out I didn't have the balls to immediately admit to it. That was really crappy of me, and I am really sorry. I'll make sure it won't happen again."

Not "hi all I made mistakes, but due to the launch and stuff I cant control I couldnt talk about it."

Get out of here man. It wouldn't have taken 20 seconds to properly apologize and he could have done it while taking a dump. And the problem wasn't that he didnt communicate after the launch, but that he lied before the launch in the first place. And whats this "I could talk all day about my mistakes but I won't." all about? Feel free to offer a proper apology if today is not convenient Sean. We've waited long enough anyway.

This is the kind of weak crap I expect from politicians. Also, when people cant play your game because your min specs were simply wrong you offer refunds. Period. Keeping the money with such a weak-arsed 'apology' is wrong. The only people who defend this nonsense are people who enjoy the product. But the one doesn't excuse the other.

What I find funny is that both Sean Murray and David Braben over-promised and under-delivered...

Not really fair or accurate to simplistically equate them in that way I am afraid. I can understand you would like Elite to have gone in a different direction and speed after release but the degree of over-promise and underdelivery at release date and the related amount of money that exchanged hands because of it at the time is orders of magnitude different. The level of misrepresentation and deceit for what was sold has no comparison.

Really hoped we do not have to go through this kind of discussion again.

Until a proper content update will be released, I'm afraid you will read several other discussions like this.

Oh I do not particularly mind discussing more content, or lack thereof, in Elite. We have the whole forum for that. I usually take an issue with simplistic history re-writing though.

Let's say we ignore what companies and their representatives say they are going to do, and compare on the basis of delivered reality in July 2020. Patch 4 for Fleet Carriers in preparation?
