Engineers Medium Security Settlement List and Guide for Modified Embedded Firmware

MCF - Modified Consumer Firmware - is a grade 2 material, so the most effective way to obtain is to scan low security bases (it can be dropped from Med.Sec too, but rates in Low Sec. seems to be better)
For some "low security" bases (all with treat level 0) you can look in another list linked to my signature - "free-to scan CDT's".
I hope to finish my new list with different kind of settlements with custom filters in the nearest future, so check this thread later for the new version.
Could you please write a type names (except L1M) from the list -

?
Thanks in advance.

1) I know both lists - as it's me who maintain them
2) And I know those names, as they were also given by me=)
It's why I suggest you to use OTHER list - the one you mention is mostly for medium (xxM) and high security bases (xxH). And for MCF the low security bases are better - and they are not present in the list you are using currently.
First candidates: L1L,L2L,L3L,M5L

4 base, no one MCF =/
RNG:(
A can only confirm that I've saw them in L1L and M5L. But as my own statistic on data yield from different settlements is very poor since last "reset" (2.1.05) I can not guarantee that there is no some more efficient way (or types of planetary bases).

I am now in the situation that I need Modified Embedded Firmware. Up until now, being aware of its rarity, I have been doing every mission with them that I was ever offered... so I have only 6. Trying the first medium security +++ base, I was immediately presented with the dreaded timer upon scanning one data point.

This is one type of game mechanic that I loathe so deeply that I just refuse to participate.

So before I waste any more of my time on surface bases - do all the base types require time race-against-the-clock minigame for the data, or are some there which let me approach them at my own pace?

Edit: Also, can MEF drop from crashed satellites? I know that Cracked Industrial Firmware can be had from those, but I am not sure if I ever got MEF from them.

1) Yes, all bases where you have a chance to get MEF require "race-against-the-clock minigame for the data" - each scan (if not the last one) gives you dome time to find and scan next datapoint in the chain of at least 3.
2) However, if you know in advance where all DAP's are placed that's not really a problem (you have more than enough time to do all necessary scans).
3) There is a little cheat with CDT terminal (if it is present in the given base) that can pause - once - this timer for infinite amount of time - just up to the scan of the next datapoint (but works only once).
4) DAP placement for all free-to-scan bases can be found in my maps - along with most effective and trouble-free routes.
And as far as I know, MEF is available only from missions and planetary bases (and the latter is the best method to obtain it effectively). However I'm not a pro in other methods - who knows?

Encoded transmission begins:
Hello, Commanders!
"Dja Co-Pilot" mapping service presents the freshest database/list of settlements available for free "data mining" ..ups, scanning in the ED:H universe - the result of the combined effort of the most dedicated commanders and my own investigation - "ED:HS settlements DB - "data mining" for engineers".
This document is a list of the settlements locations/types with a set of predefined filters (or "filtered views" in terms of Google spreadsheet terminology) convenient for different "search-for-materials" goals.
In order to use it a personal copy is recommended, but not required option. However, "filtering capability" - main feature of this list - unlikely would work on the mobile devices.
Using it is as simple as this:

Commanders, please be aware that this list is directly linked to (and affected by) the "data prospecting" settlements spreadsheet. If you like proposed functionality and have some time to spare - please, contribute. Minimum requirements - motivation, google account, personal copy of the above mentioned doc and some 5-6 values to enter after each planetary base visit. PM me if you are ready to share resulting data.
DjaCop services and cmdr Dja wishes you a safe and pleasant flight, Commander

Firstly, thank you for this thread; It was a little confusing at first, but spending some time driving around the base and practicing what I needed to do slowly became clear. I just wish that hitting even the smallest rock didn't send you spinning out of control or jam you solid and ruin your runs far too many times.

I started with Gender - A1 - Thollon Horizons, and scanned the first and second data points; after that, the second data point weirdly didn't need to be scanned again, so I moved on to the third. The third always did and it took me a fair while to realise the 4th and last wasn't visible and had to be targeted by pointing in the rough direction.

I kept me speed down to my normal overland afk rolling of 15 as that seemed to minimize rock distractions; as a reward I got 9x Unusual Encrypted Files and 6x Modified Embedded, thank goodness. I'm on my way to try and earn 6 more so I can have a crack at 12 rolls on Grade 5 Multicannons... but urgh what a horrible fiddly system still! Thank you for making it a bit less awful.

Kokary - 3 - Sawyer Beacon - Just don't do it, folks! So of course, the next load of bases don't have any embedded at all, so I work my way through the list until I get to Kokary; and it's 1.9g planet that even with 7a thrusters on my Corvette, it pulls you down so fast that even the slightest downward thrust crashes you into the planet. At first I parked about 6km away and tried to drive up the slope to get to the station, but the SRV was to weak to get past the gravity and gradient combined. I tried to land as fast as possible in the actual base and dismiss the ship before I flagged aggressive, but that didn't work as there wasn't enough time and I was destroyed before I could escape (with everything firing through the terrain I tried to hide behind, sigh).

After about an hour I managed to find a spot 2.5km away from the base on the hill which rises above it; but then found that SRV wasn't strong enough to reach the top of the base now. So I risked running through the exclusion zone to try and leap the force barrier and get in that way. Only to find the SRV also can't get high enough to clear that. I tried to go around, fell off, landed on my roof and then found that I could only thrust to the left, so had to slide across the floor until I hit a wall, and then bounced off it the right direction to get on my wheels. Except I kept flagging again, so I hide under an awling and waited 15 seconds to log out and reset it. Half an hour later, getting stuck in all kinds of ridiculous places and finding the gravity seemed to break my direction of travel and thrusters and... I finally exploded bouncing off yet another scenery box. Rather than get a new SRV and go back again and see if I could reverse up the outside slope... I just gave up.

Don't do Kokary!

Don't do Kokary!
Hmm... There is a kind of "notes" column in the list, and the biggest one is for Kokary system, it cites: " 2 g, only for small ship (difficulty with place to land)"
=) Yep, don't do Kokary=)

I only did this base before I knew that bases would reset but I wouldn't recommend it at all. I posted a few times describing how to do it, basically you need to park a few km away and literally drive backwards up the steep slopes to reach the base. For some reason the SRV has more traction going backwards than forwards (despite having double wheels on the forward end) and I was eventually able to get my way up using gradual "runs" where I would see-saw back and forth using backwards traction. I would need to keep the drive assist on and keep the engine going continually even while "stationary" on the slopes to keep from sliding back down the hills. Then even once you reach the base there's the issue of getting onto the roof, which also required backwards boosting towards the wall as you can't simply drive forwards or boost up to the roof. It's really not worth doing with the large numbers of alternative bases we have available. I was just very stubborn at the time and decided I wanted every last bit of MEF I could get in case the base resets weren't happening. As it turns out I didn't even get any MEF to drop from Sawyer Beacon anyways despite my efforts and I haven't been back since.

I was in an Aspx for Kokary. It was bumpy terrain but I didn't have any trouble other than scouting a good landing spot. I found a place behind the base, about 2km away but flat enough and getting to the base was no problem.

Just created the most compact version of "SVSv - FDM" settlements classification in form of a pdf file (with clickable links to maps) -
"EDHS: Present state of SVS classification (Size-Visual-Security) with official model names reference (ED:H 2.1.05)"
Also, "welcome" tab of my main classification spreadsheet is significantly redone - added plenty of links to all available resources, including some links to the posts in this tread (videos, maps)
Some maps also has been refreshed (so some of the links in the starting post became obsolete).
Maps legend finally updated to reflect current state also.

See the thread on MEFs in the engineers section. The industrial base is super easy and only has 3 data points (unless you accidentally land inside the trespass zone like I did the other night. I think I can go pay off that bounty tonight).

you can't simply drive forwards or boost up to the roof.

You can, but you need a good run and it takes a lot of tries (I did it this way). But yeah, Kokary sucks. Just finding a place to land close to the base is hard.

Tall Works, Chick Bara - D2:

Only one of the four Data Links is on the map, the other three are in smaller "outposts" a few hundred meters from the main one. Took me a while to figure this out, but in the end the facility yielded a sweet sweet MEF!

Yep, sorry, but I have no good screen since 2.1 of that type of the base - the 3 others must be shown on the "overview" map, as this is an exceptional case of very long distances between DP's - about 2 km's for each - and the biggest "countdown" of 300 secs. As I'said, for this overview I have no good screen.

I had a noob moment yesterday even though I've been playing Elite for ages. I got so frustrated trying to do these timed base runs in the SRV. I always overpowered on the straight stretches, hit something and span wildly out of control. I decided to look at the settings for the SRV and thought I'd have a go with drive assist off. SOOO much better! Give it a go if you are an old slow-witted duffer like me, makes control in those tight spaces so much easier and now i can do the runs easily. (Also set your yaw and pitch on your boost to get yourself out of upturned situations when you boost) I'm guessing most people know this already but I didn't.
