Game Discussions Microsoft Flight Simulator

Heres a question for some of you with more knowledge than me. Is this an engine that can be used for other games etc? Or is it only useful for this one specific instance?

Apparently there is a "world update" coming for the game in a couple of weeks. As Bing add more data, that gets integrated into their game through their machine learning algorithm.

The above is a dev interview with the lead developer & product manager of it. I had no idea it's the same people that were behind 'A Plague Tale: Innocence'. Colour me more excited.

They suggest the best thing to do to start is go home. See your house, see where you grew up, see areas that are familiar to you but have a different perspective from the air. It's what I intend to do, and I imagine lots of other people will too. Also, a game is coming. This is just the simulator part.

VR support is in a few months apparently. Initially for the MS/Valve/HP headset, and then later the others like Rift, Vive etc. I also suspect VorpX will have numerous profiles in fairly short order.

This is a game for the long haul flight.
Isle of Arran...I've climbed to the top of that ridge seen in the first 5 minutes :)

Edit: I should have said 'walked uphill'...since there was very little climbing involved. It was a veterans charity thing, the climb wearing the tin legs tore my stumps to bits by the end of it. Couldn't wear the prosthetics for several days afterward. Needless to say, I'll leave the walking around uphill bit to others in future...I'd forgotten how useful having your own feet can be :D

I think a lot depends on the capability of the SDK when it's released. Not seen it yet, and the most up-to-date info I've found is January... so pre-Covid meltdown.

If you can create your own missions, planes (which could be things other than traditional planes for instance), scenery etc then there's no reason to suggest it couldn't be used as an engine for a different game. Also don't know how much of a closed-platform it will be in terms of publishing addons... whether you have to do it through their store, or if the sim allows another way. But time will tell.

They've also licensed their flight-sim technology in the past to other games companies, and may do so again.

I'm without my gaming computer until next January and this sim is really making me wish I had it sooner! Assuming my rig is specced out with the recommended hardware, what kind of visual performance can I expect with a marginal internet bandwidth, say 16mbs download speed?

I've watched a vid of an Australian guy running quite happily with 3Mbps down and 1Mbps up at 4k resolution with Ultra settings, there wasn't any perceivable drawn in of the terrain etc...it was my concern too since my download speed is similar to yours.

Thanks for putting my mind at ease, MoleHD. Now I just have to be patient. The only flight stick I own is the Thrustmaster 16000m, reckon that'll do to get me started?

I have a Thrustmaster Hotas X, which is the cheapest Hotas you can buy. Worked fine when I used to play Elite, and I'm sure it'll be fine for getting started with FS2020. I expect to spend the first week at least just trying to get the plane off the ground, and then not crashing on landing.

Well, I pulled the trigger and spent the money, most $$$ I've spent on a single game in a long time. Now it's wait for download time with fingers crossed my internet doesn't give out!
Since I get the standard version for free with MS gamepass ultimate, I'll more than likely spend a few bucks to upgrade to premium on release...can't do it now seemingly, I've tried.
