Game Discussions Microsoft Flight Simulator

Incredible stuff. Gave it a few hours after sorting out bindings and trying a few nostalgic spots around the world. Must tweak performance more, and I do NOT envy the task the devs have of optimizing everything for VR. Major sacrifices will need to be made to hit high frame rates for sure!

I'm wondering what kind of experience the folks getting the G2 will have considering the sheer number of pixels it'll need to push! Or will it just have to run at half-resolution until GPUs catch up?

Well, I got monthly sub to Xbox Gaming and look at dat, I can test MSF2020 sim for 1$ woopie! Gotta say, downloading 100Gigs gonna take some time but seriously, its almost like a free demo. If it gonna work good and if I like it - will buy the full version. Kind of funny reading all the drama on Steam currently..
If it works will post some scenic pictures soon!

To some extent, the G2's higher resolution is actually helpful for performance. On my CV1, I have to use supersampling to achieve an acceptable image at 1080p per eye. That puts strain on both the graphics card and the CPU. With the G2, you don't need supersampling - you can just render it as-is, so in theory at least, much more efficient and performance friendly. 🤷‍♀️

With Oculus' recent d*ck move u-turn regarding FB, and the fact that the G2 will get support for this first, I'm seriously considering one.

Having watched one of Squirrel's videos earlier, I learned that icing up the windows and wings happens and affects not only your visibility but also flight characteristics, as it should; and he managed this to occur by flying through a cloud at high enough altitude through the Alps (colder air presumably) in a Cessna.

It's detail like this that keeps blowing my mind. Really need to experiment more with the weather system.

Icing (and de-icing failures) was actually the cause for several real world accidents. It adds weight, affects aerodynamics and lift, and can even affect externally mounted sensors or interfere with moving parts in the wings.

There's a great 19 season-long documentary on National Geographic called "Air Crash Investigation" (or "Mayday" in US and Canada), it's about airplane crashes and the investigations to find out what caused them. You'll be absolutely shocked about all the kinds of stuff that can cause even high-tech big airliners to fall down.

Yeah, wasn't the Air France flight from Brazil affected by it (i.e. the icing sensors didn't work correctly or something).

I'm just amazed that they implemented it (seemingly) correctly in the game sim. I know that modern software has come a long way but still, it's the little details like this that make me rather giddy.

Aww man, that truly sucks. It is worth it once you get in there... promise!

Did you leave your PC on overnight? I'm guessing not.
This experience has been a bugfest for me. The downloader stalled out again on me last night, so I restarted it and it went straight into the game as if I had finished the download. Thing is, I hadn't, so I only got so far (initial plotting of route on map) before it crashed. It was late and I wasn't in the mood to mess with it, so I suspended everything. I started the installer back up today and it's behaving again, downloading where it left off. I just hope that with all these stops and starts that when it finally finishes downloading, it actually works. I'd go literally insane if the install is broken and I have to redownload the entire 90 GB all over again because of this glitchy installer.

Speaking of, does the installer have a "Repair Install" option like many other Microsoft products? I NEVER want to have to reinstall this game from scratch ever again!

As someone who starts hyperventilating every time there's a bit of turbulence on a flight... I will NOT be watching that. :ROFLMAO:

Yep, it's pretty unstable to say the least. I had loads of 'fun' yesterday trying to get it to recognise the Premium content and pick it up sufficiently to download it. Not been tested or thought out at all - especially wrt to Steam. When you do get into the game, if you go to the Profile tab there's a 'Content Manager' there, and you can refresh things there. That's how I eventually had to do it.

No. Back it up! :ROFLMAO:

I'm going to have to buy a dedicated hard drive just for this backup, and it will take all day long LOL. My worry is that this initial install will be corrupted, in which case I'll have nothing to back up....

Microsoft should have sold USB drives with the install files rather than DVDs. I would have paid extra for this luxury, especially had I known this internet installer was such rubbish!

Just buy an SSD instead. Installing on a spindle disk is painful, and this sim needs an ongoing internet connection no matter how you look at it. For live data streaming and for pre-caching - it all has to get downloaded from Microsoft, and the data gets very big very quickly.
