Game Discussions Microsoft Flight Simulator

Last bit of the hardware sorted: the trackIR didn't "just work" by default. Turns out all it required was to update the games list db in the trackIR app. Now it works out of the box, yay.

Before I started FS I loaded trackIR and checked for updates. I've been doing this for a few years now, so it's pretty much automatic for me. :)

Has anyone figured out how to set the elevator trim on light aircraft without continuous pilot induced oscillations? I've tried different axis, using the a keypress and the best I've come up with is to go to the external view, where you can see a slider and that helps you make very small adjustments. The darn thing is just too sensitive and it can take minutes to set it.

Small steps. Perhaps you key repeat is too rapid? I have up and down elevator trim assigned to a rocker switch on my yoke - not an axis - I find no problem in stabilising the 152 and 172 - I ran the DA20 last night and don't remember an issue there either. As long as you start off with the trim wheel in the TO position you shouldn't find much trouble. So far I have found the 152 and 172 very stable.

Let us know how it performs...new bits and bobs etc. I'm interested :)

Will do! (y)

I'm particularly eager to try it because aside from the bells and whistles of eye tracking 4C already had, according to Tobii it also has much better head tracking support because it has much wider tracking angles (both horizontally and especially vertically which was the weak point of 4C), apparently it can track the head even with only one visible eye in the scan arch (that's why it now supports much wider angles) and it has constant gaze recovery, so it should no longer have that noticeable "hickup" when we drop out of the laser scan angle and re-enter.

My only worry is not being "properly" supported in FacetrackNoIR (the plugin is for Tobii 4C), but I're read a small guide on how to setup FacetrackNoIR to make it work with Tobii 5 and even saw a video demonstrating it works (the video was using Star Citizen but it should work the same on any games that support TrackIR).

If it really does what it tells on the tin, Tobii 5 may very well be the device I long wished for, a head tracking device that requires absolutely zero gizmos or cables on my head.

Will let you know in a few hours after I had the chance to try it properly.

Regarding instrument readability that a few have mentioned:

CTRL+ 1 through 5(?) goes to close views of instrument groups - there is a next and previous instrument view too - once an instrument view is active the next/previous binds work. (I couldn't twig to that last night). Manipulating the Garmin in virtual cockpit even with TrackIR was horrible - CTRL+2 made it a doddle.

Instrument and glare-shield lighting works well - I had no readability issues using these.

This year's Strictly is going to be a bit different - someone has stolen the Blackpool Tower. The Pier is submerged but the amusement park is at least represented (didn't see any movement on the roller-coasters though).

Up in Nordland, the mesh is again showing its poor quality - I like flying around the coast of northern Norway but I won't be doing it again in this sim until I can get some decent scenery (plus hopefully a Dash 8-100 or a Twotter for those tight approaches). Autogen didn't look too great up there either but at least there wasn't a repeat of Orkney's flashing tiles.

One other thing - I found the map in the sim pretty useless for IFR navigation - happily my existing enroute charts seem to be reflected in correct frequency and location of VOR/NDB/ILS in northern Europe so far. I don't know what AIRAC they have used so cannot comment on airways etc as my charts are not current. Since Microsoft have plugged partnership with VATSIM I expect matters are well in hand wrt navigation.

I still want my cases of Jepp charts....

I was able to locate my house. It is represented by a brown blob surrounded by greenish mushroom growths, but I still recognized it.

The map data seems to be quite old. The huge shopping center across the way is missing completely, and it went in 5 years ago or more. But the army barracks is there, and it went in a few years before that.

Still, it's got all the landscape right, and the rest is close enough unless you're down at rooftop level, really.

There sure is a lot of area covered, that's for sure :)

All digital now - I had a CDROM version given to me as a gift some years ago - I couldn't even consider justifying the annual update sub.

I used to buy just-out-of-date enroute charts but suddenly they became almost as expensive as current - too many flight simmers I fear. ;)

just read the PC gamer review. You gonna need a bigger pc. Hopefully the fanboys will hassle them to improve the performance on standard pc congig. Its the 'new' crysis.

Funnily enough, Crysis runs like a charm on my PC (I remember the days when it didn't, and I resigned to the fact I will never be able to play it "as it's meant to be played", how wrong I was), whereas FSX runs worse (and certainly looks worse) than FS2020.

Make of that what you will:D

My rig (Liquid cooled i7 8700k/GTX 1080ti, 4Tb of NVME and 4Tb of SATA SSD)... being fairly average these days, except for perhaps me shoving 64Gb of DDR4 in it, ran everything at ultra with very little issue or hiccup...even though as default the sim recommended high settings. It surely needs optimising as it fairly hammered my GPU even when it was apparently doing nothing except downloading in the background with not even the UI open...that aside, the entire game deciding to uninstall and reinstall itself from scratch led to me just uninstalling it completely...it ran perfectly fine when I had it installed.

Don't mention the Orkney islands though...I could have drawn a better rendition with some crayons on a wall :cautious:

The more I use this precache feature, the slower and more unresponsive and painful it becomes....

I haven't bothered trying the pre-cache out yet, I'm just flying normally and letting it load as I go. Even on my crappy 10Mbps net it hasn't had any issues yet, but then I'm on HIGH settings not ULTRA so that might be why. I'm also flying slow general aviation planes too.

I should clarify that I'm talking about the "paint the area you want to cache" tool become sluggish, not the simulator itself. I think this tool is bugged.

Well I have to say I'm incredibly happy with Tobii 5. :)

Regarding eye tracking I didn't notice any improvement over 4C, Tobii says it has superior scanning frequency and resolution, but I was already extremely satisfied with the eye tracking in previous version so I didn't really notice anything.

Now regarding head tracking, the difference is HUGE! The (much) wider tracking angles work wonders, and head tracking is so much smoother and stable now. I can turn my head until I almost break my neck and it never loses track, and I can finally look well up or down and it keeps tracking too. It also comes with a new mount that goes below the monitor, and it has adjustment so you can have it to your taste without having to tilt the entire monitor.

Regarding TrackIR emulation, which was my biggest fear, I am pleased to say it not only works flawlessly with FacetrackNoIR, but it actually feels much better than the 4C due to the huge improvements to head tracking. it's much smoother and precise than the 4C in this department, with the 4C the view wobbled slightly up and down, and it tilted a bit down whenever I tried to look to the sides, now it's absolutely flawless. Additionally, it now supports roll, and the X / Y / Z axis now also work smoothly, which means we can now lean into the monitor to zoom in to read the instruments, or lift our head up to peek over the dashboard, which is fantastic.

I highly recommend that you upgrade to the new version if you can. (y)

If you do, you'll need to uninstall all drivers and software from the previous version, and for TrackIR emulation you'll need to configure FacetrackNoIR slightly differently, you can just follow this instructions (it uses Star Citizen as an example for it works for any game): https://www.dropbox.com/s/2mx85be1fi053wb/DCT - HOW-TO - Tobii 5 EyeTracking - Guide - Installation & Configuration - Star Citizen.pdf?dl=0

Like the previous version, the eye tracking functionality only works properly in screens up to 27 inches, which incidentally is exacty what I have.:)

Exactly like I long hoped for, on top of the eye tracking features this device also provides full TrackIR functionality without the need to have any gear or cables on my head, just need the Tobii device mounted below the monitor and turn it on. Very happy camper here :)
