Game Discussions Microsoft Flight Simulator

Good point Askavir, I should have explained further... There should already be a key binding by default for ATC, I just can't remember it off the top of my head. Navlog is N, ground map is V.

I have bound ATC and ground map to toggle switches on the X.52...

A real pilot gave a critique off the various sim aspects beyond the fancy graphics. Wasnt to impressed. Maybe he should have been the test pilot to give realism perspective.

........
How do you create a nav point or equivalent while you are just free flying with no flight plan but decide you want to go somewhere?
.......

You other questions are well covered already. This one though - on your world map you can insert a custom destination anywhere - just click your mouse anywhere on the map and you get the option to "Create Custom". I have not investigated this as I hurt my arm last night and am having difficulty doing much.

Since Microsoft are "partnered" with VATSIM (enthusiasts providing online air traffic control for flight sim) then one would hope that there would be methods of flight planning for IFR including airways, nav points, arrival and departure procedures, etc. I can't find anything about that so far*- the Garmins have the data but I have not tried to flight plan using them yet. Maybe this is something that will develop in the game or perhaps like previous versions, we will just have to do our flight planning outside the game and ignore / disable the AI ATC if we use VATSIM.

Has anyone tried using the FMS in the jets for this?

* EDIT - I just noticed the IFR settings on the world map page - will have to check them out when my arm is better.

I decided to keep photogrammetry on. It seems to be a mix of amazing and rubbish. When it works, it's pretty darn impressive, as long as I'm flying over and not driving by. When it doesn't work, it reminds me of this:

It's 2020, so I can pretend that the death angels of the ark and major earthquakes have hit parts of the city, but the parts of the city still intact look pretty amazing - definitely better and more realistic than the autogen version.

So how many of you are playing in "Open" mode? I've encountered a surprising number of pilots around an airport that's not that popular, which surprised me. When I turn airplane tags on, the sky is full of them, though I'm guessing a lot of these are over the horizon since I can usually only see a small subset of the planes. Speaking of, is there an easy way to toggle plane tags on and off with a key binding?

Yeah, I turned tags on last night and was amazed at just how many other players were flying around where I was. I even saw another player taking off from N31 while I flew overhead! No idea if I could talk or chat to that player, haven't figured much of the multiplayer stuff out yet.

Yeah I don't know anything about chat or comms. Is there the equivalent of a "CB channel 19" or "146.52" for pilots?

In other news, these CTDs are getting on my nerves!

No idea, I might. I didn't bother with the MP options as I care little for it at the end of the day. Whether other airplanes are players of AI doesn't change much to me. I've seen what looks like real-traffic airliners flying high on the typical route towards the US, but that's about it.

I was very pleased with my IFR experiment today. On the world map, selecting IFR and high airways, origin Shipol gate heavy 9, destination Manchester - bang! flight plan laid out with lovely airways and nav points. Loaded the A320 - power-up, open FMS (or whatever Airbus calls it), select flight plan page and lo and behold the flight plan is already inserted.

Now all I have to do is brush up on my airbus systems and robert will be my mother's brother.

One thing - I was wondering what was going on when getting ready for take off when I realised that the throttle control on my yoke was just adjusting the LH throttle lever - had to rely on ye olde function keys until I could use autothrottle.

OH yeah - one more thing - I loaded up the 172 at my very local airfield (Crossland Moor) and, apart from the grass in need of mowing, it was surprisingly well represented - down to the fuel spot, hangars and the undulating runway. I picked live weather and it was very realistic, windy, gusting, low scudding cloud with breaks - looking from my lounge window across the valley to the airstrip, it was precise. I'll have to sort out the drone camera controls to scout about in future.

The weird thing is that there are trees everywhere. Yesterday, I flew over the U.S.S. New Jersey across from downtown Philadelphia and it had trees growing from the superstructure. There was a freighter up river and it was full of trees! My back yard has more trees than it ever had!

Of course, this better than other sims or game with the odd tree or clump of trees strewn around...

Can't for some reason force FS2020 to stick to 30fps. The in-game limiter doesn't work (seems like a bug, limits the game to 20), and doing this through the Nvidia control panel (either by limiting it explicitly to 30 frames, or the half-refresh vsync option) doesn't seem to either.

There is a big difference from what I can tell; with 'ALL players ON' you get 'ghosts' that can fly/taxi through each other and such. At Lukla today piles of planes where on the one single runaway all the time.

I recommend a Youtuber called Squirrel. I came across him originally via Euro Truck Sim but he's now doing FS2020 videos for a while, where he normally runs through all the procedures, plus since he has a GA licence he can give some RL context which I always find very useful.

As for the nav plan, there's an icon for it to call it up, haven't tried to add any waypoints yet, but in the ATC window you have the option to select nearest (or further afield) airports and tune into them, and request stop and go landings etc.

Had my first full ATC guided VFR flight last light, it worked really well. Something that was always a bit of a black box for me with FSX.

You can add flight plans and waypoints on the fly with some of the planes, I just haven't worked it out yet. I feel comfortable now with most buttons in the 152 and what they do, will move on to other planes slowly over time.

Thanks for the suggestion, I will be subscribing.

Is there a frame rate hit in MP? I lose 10-15 fps if an NPC is anywhere close so i turn them off. I have good internet so that's not an issue. Just wasting time at work or I'd jump on and check.
