Game Discussions Microsoft Flight Simulator

@Mole HD I forgot to ask, since we both have very similar Internet/bandwidth/ping situations, how does your Internet speed handle streaming the scenery from their servers when in flight? Is that a limiting factor on your visuals and VFR?

Edit: Oh, maybe you don't even play this game. I forgot that I was talking about that on a different thread altogether sorry!

I can't remember how big it is, but I don't think it's bigger than 20GB. There's a similar one for Japan, and the UK is coming next month. :)

Turned out it was only 3 gig. Still took forever. ;)

Might just be worth checking (and apologies if you've already done it) that in the General Options under Data you have all the Bing data world graphics and photogrammetry turned on. I know that in my case they were off by default, and I was flying around for quite a while thinking the scenery looked good, but not great...

In my case, they were already set, but thanks for this as I wouldn't have thought to check.

@ All

And, with some help from a stranger on the Internet, I was able to get one of my go-to FSX aircraft into M$FS20. I give you, the Soft Seventeen! It's an Air Creations 582 SL air trike that I "repainted" in homage to one of my father's planes. There are still issues with the 582 SL conversion, but it seems to work well enough so far.

I played for quite a while, the net connection was more than enough to handle streaming scenery..I ended up uninstalling MSFS, not enough Messerschmitts in it for me so I went back to IL2 :)

Well, I have to say, I'm impressed...

Just got my Reverb G2, and despite still being stuck with my 1080 which is minimum spec, I was blown away by my first very short test flight. I mean, I've really enjoyed playing the game on flat screen, it's been great. But in VR... It's like flying!!!

I took a very short flight in the 172 out of the airport a couple of miles from where I live. The default seat placement seems very close to the instrument panel, but that may be correct and it's possible to jiggle it by cheating a bit with the reset cockpit camera button, really just something to get used to, and it seems it's actually a bit higher than in flat screen giving a much better view outside the plane.

The sunset was spectacular, beautiful colors glowing behind the mountains, the lights of the town glowing as I seemed to float above them. It really felt like I was in a plane flying 1,000 feet above the ground. :) Definitely will be things to get used to and using the mouse in the cockpit (which I'm happy to do, not really into using controllers) is a bit hit and miss, but even so I managed a smooth centerline landing!

Cannot for the life of me get VoiceAttack to press any buttons in MSFS, but even so... Will be interesting to see how it looks and feels when I'm able to upgrade my GPU, but even with the 1080 it's all playable, as is ED which I had a quick whirl in, and which looks incredibly sharp.

Took me a day to get it to play and record using VD and my Q1, but here is my first attempt :)
A new video and a new series on checking out plane cockpits and flying in Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 in VR. This time the good old Cessna.

Just a couple of pictures from inside the TBM in VR. A bit more spacious than the 172's cockpit.

In the cockpit

You can sort of see the Golden Gate Bridge... Sort of, remember, this is still with a 1080 :p

And flying over the Bay Bridge with San Francisco in the background

These are screenshots, so it is not through the headset, but what is displayed on the monitor. In MSFS it's displayed as two separate quite small images of what each eye in the headset is seeing rather than a full window view in Elite, so picture taking like this is a bit limited. That said the cockpits look great and are easy to navigate as most of the camera shortcuts that I use in flat screen are still available in VR.

I'd popped the graphics down to medium to see whether it played better, but it doesn't seem to make a noticeable difference, so I'll be going back to high, and hoping that Nvidia get their supply chain sorted soon. There's a few weird glitches in VR, such as it always seems to lose my joystick bindings and I need to restart the sim, check the bindings are working in flat screen then go to VR, which seems to work.

For me, I have found the best way to do things is to set up a flight in flat screen, then switch to VR when you're sat in the plane at the airport, which you can do easily, the switching between flat screen and VR in game is actually a nice feature. Considering this is a first release, I find it to be very stable, and as I said earlier, and the guy in the video above says, it really does feel much more realistic - dare one say immersive? - taking off, flying, landing and even taxiing in VR. A good job by Asobo IMHO, and I'll be looking forward to parting with piles of money when I can get my hands on a new GPU!

I've been pretty impressed with VR in this game. It's not great but good enough. I've just been sitting back and letting the copilot do the flying.

I'm currently on a GTX1080, and will likely go for the RTX3080 as soon as I can get my hands on one. Was thinking about the RTX3070, just because it's going into a relatively old PC, but I'm thinking I should go the extra little way as VR (which I'm playing very happily even with the 1080) clearly needs all it can get.

Because, somethings definitely up. I just landed at Atka in Alaska, was cool, covered in snow, even the runway, and as far as I could tell completely deserted, I even wondered whether perhaps it was closed during the winter, I mean it's a long way out there...

But after landing, I switched out of VR, and...

I think I might be double parked. 🤔😳

@askavir I guess you'd need a base, too, with that Virpil stick?

On behalf of askavir, yes you will need a base. Most Virpil and VKB (which I have) are modular and you can take whichever stick suits your needs but will need a base to put it on. Certainly with VKB, the base is the expensive bit, don't know Virpil, but they are both from what I understand similar quality, and are really good sticks. I've been using my Gunfighter for just over a year, and it's great.

Very funny, I'm using a RTX2080, need to tweek the setting somewhat in MSFS2020.

Yes, I wasn't expecting much with the GTX1080, it's an old card (and minimum spec for the Reverb G2), so honestly I'm just happy that I've been able to play MSFS2020 and Elite at all. Elite is frankly fine, but it seems MSFS2020 is cunningly cutting extraneous stuff out so that at least we can do the basics of flying. I was wondering why the game felt quite so deserted, but seriously, in VR there was nothing else there, no other planes at all - until I switched to flat screen.

Yes the Virpil requires a base, sorry forgot to mention it, that's why it goes in total well over 500€ (more like 700). I admit I'm madly in love with it, but at the same time I feel a bit guilty for wanting it as in total it's very expensive for a, ahem, "entertainment item", so deep down I hope my current X56 lasts a long time because in practice is still more than enough for me :)
