Military Only Slots

They did away with it and I think it was a mistake. Specialization is a good thing.

Can expand it to include something like Industrial-specialized slots too.

What I'd like to see are specialized modules to go with specialized slots, that give bonuses beyond their non-specialized counterparts. That way you can still use a ship for any role but if it utilizes it's specialized slots it's that much better and that much more attractive for that role. This is not a thought-out idea so no examples of what I mean, but say a specialized refinery module for an Industrial-only slot could hold more or operate faster, specialized passenger modules might offer more seats or more comfort for a pay boost (or something like that), trade-only cargo racks maybe give a weight reduction or who knows...

This !!! Perfect !

Combat people will still use them for that, everyone else has more options!!
That is the exact point - non-combatants should NOT have that option (though, on my explo-conda I put there guardian shield booster :D - low weight and good use).

Removing the slots from the Chieftain would result in a ship that has unusually few slots for a medium size ship. This would really discourage its use. Lakon wouldn't shoot their product in the foot like that. Converting them to anything-slots would be different and not detrimental per se. It is a combat-oriented vessel though.

I'm not a purist when it comes to purpose or specialization of ships. I'm a big fan of multi-purpose ships (it's an affliction of pragmatism), but some things are going to benefit greatly from specialization.* It's hard to argue that. I can see the limitations of all of my multi-purpose builds most every day that I use them. It doesn't necessarily cause me any significant difficulties but they clearly exist. This isn't to say that there aren't benefits to a multi-purpose build; of course there are.

* Case in point:
The Alliance Chieftain is a great exploration ship! I hear that it's among the best for exploring and finding weaknesses in Thargoid vessels.

I don't think anyone here is actually advocating for the removal of military slots despite what is being said, it's all just puchback against the incessant demands of making specialist slots into regular slots the moment FDEV add them to any ship, that gets old really fast these days!

Wait, this isn't a bump of an old thread? I could have sworn I participated in one exactly like this before about a year ago. :giggle:

Anyway, my take on it is still the same as well.

They were added as extra slots on top of what the ships already had, intentionally added and limited for game balancing purposes. Just changing them into adding even more extra slots defeats the purpose in which they were intended and added to the game for in the first place.

Ironically, the removal of the specialization has made the Beluga a better passenger ship than it was with specialization in place. It's size 5s were passenger only, so you were forced to run a size 6 shield. Without specialization you can run a size 5 shield and have all four size 6 slots available for cabins.

I'd say the proper solution should have been one or two size 6 specialized passenger only, one size 5 specialized passenger only.

So you'd still have specialization but could choose shield size and carry cargo. You wouldn't want a ship to be so specialized that it's crippled for anything else, or forces you into only specific builds with little room for customization.

What about specialized limpet controllers for industrial slots? Maybe they allow more limpets at a time or something. It's just an idea that popped in my head just now to illustrate what I mean about specialization.

It's never going to happen by the way lol.

New limpet controllers coming for size 3 and 7 slots, so halfway there!

I like my build options, so the fewer specialized slots the better. The second size 5 slot on my Beluga is the scoop for example.

It should be set up that the things that are able to go in military slots can ONLY be in military slots. Then they'd be valuable, and the ships with them would have an inherent edge. As it stands they are a restriction that really doesn't make much sense.
