Newcomer / Intro Mining and you.

Oh, cool then.
Welcome back to your vintage thread. Feel free to update. :D

Updated

I will be bringing the mining vette for the CG (yes i have 2 of them, ETC that goes with high ranks).

#FYI the original thread is located here

Fly safe and kill rocks!

Since this thread has been necroed, I'll post this correction.
The caveat in this is Osmium, platinum and Painite. These three ores can only be sourced at a RES.
Mining doesn't have to be done in a RES. Osmium, platinum and painine can be found in any metallic ring, and are more common in a prostine metallic ring. All that a reS does is give a slight increase in the number of fragments per roid and a small increase in the frequency of high yield roids.
It is far safer to just drop at a random part of the ring, especially for new players in smaller ships.

found that out last night...... dropped into a HAS/RES@ VARATI BC 6 in my cobra III [woah] and had a shiny new ship back at Thompson Dock in very short order,
sold all my mining stuff and went back to killing instead.

I have already mentioned this about droping out in the rings if you want an easy life, and where to find the named ores- However i have updated the information regarding where to find the ores(as in metalic rings not just res sites) and highlighted the information for ease of reading.

I have provided plenty of advice about pirates + res sites so that you can draw up your own conclusions about the danger you put thyself into. As i said there is NO POLICE PRESENCE in a HAZ RES.
Welcome to you new shiny ship...regards the pirates - YHAAAAR!

I also stated that you can drop out into the rings under "Bonus level", which may have saved you some pain and rebuy costs... Remember you chose to go there- risk vs reward and all that..

Fly safe out there!

If you start in LHS 3447 then the local asteroid belt is a few ls away and pristine metallic. I did a delete save test to see how easy it was for a new player at a recent CG held in the starter system. Got around 20k from buying/selling metals and then got my Sidewinder a prospector/collector/refinery plus a massive 4 tonnes cargo space.

Went off to the local belt and mined, in a Sidewinder, with really good results. Came back with Palladium/Osmium in both the hold and refinery. Couple of trips and I'd moved to a Hauler, a few more and I was in a Cobra! :D

You only really need 1E rated equipment for the Sidey as the hold's so small there really isn't any point mining 16 tonnes from a roid when you have 4 tonnes of space. All equipment can be sourced from Worlidge or Fairbairn the next 2 stations to Trevithick.

Maybe do this in Solo if you really are a new starter and by the time you get to a Cobra you'd be better in a planetary ring rather than an asteroid belt.

Good guide :)

Hi everyone.

Having done a fair bit of mining since the new updates, I thought i`d put down a few thoughts.

Mining can be a "spare time filler" when you don't want to do trading/ combat. Or it can be your main source of income when your don't have access to the more expensive ships.

Its fairly quiet, and you usually do not see any enemy ships / fed police when you're out there mining in a ordinary Resource Extraction Site (depending upon location).
There is something satisfying about blasting rocks out of the void and making a healthy profit from it at the same time.
Of course there exceptions to this, if you decide to be brave and drop into a "populated" RES site such as a High, Med, Low and now Hazardous.

What are the benefits of the populated RES?

There is a greater abundance of the "rare" ores, such as gold, silver, palladium etc...And the percentage of mineral value is a lot higher, based upon RES difficulty.
As you are in a asteroid field as opposed to a belt, there are loads of rocks for you to point your lasers at. Which in turn makes it much quicker to fill up your cargo hold.

Are there any drawbacks of populated RES?
There is all that ore just lying there to be blasted out of the rock, and the pirates know it!
If you drop into a RES, the level of the RES will dictate the level of skill required to kill the pirates, Low, Med, High.

What this means in the game is you can easily drop into the rings of a planet or an ordinary RES, and not be too bothered about being attacked by pirates. Yes they "may" appear, but the level of the pirate is very low - as in mostly harmless, etc. But if you drop into a populated RES, the level of it will dictate the level of pirates, and numbers also.
Thus the higher the level of the RES, the harder the pirates are and the size of their wings also.

Nice guide and helpful for sure. But I have tested this again for a second time at a Pristine Metallic ring, and the yield of rare minerals appears to be the same at High, hazardous etc extraction sites, or just some random spot on the ring. For me it is most safe to just manually drop out a some random spot on the ring, not at the specific "extraction sites". When you go to a random spot; Some times you will see 1 to 3 ships in the first minute after you drop in. I normally hang around to see if they are hostile etc and either go back to super cruise and come back and try again or just wait for them to fly off (they may be police). Once these initial ships are gone I just start mining uninterrupted until my drones run out.

Again, this is a good guide and you deserve rep. I don't leave this information to say "you are wrong", just to add to the knowledge base so we can better understand the patterns. And work this game out.

I mine quite often tbph. However, I mine in a dual-medium laser Type 9. with ~480 cargo. Good money if you've got nothing better to do.

Good article. Rep'd

If you want to find the closest Pristine Metallic Rings to your location then you can use my tool to find them:

I want to try ice mining where I believe that having prospectors is more important than having collectors due to the high value low quantity nature of the 'roids but I have yet to confirm this.
