Mining doesn't have to be done in a RES. Osmium, platinum and painine can be found in any metallic ring, and are more common in a prostine metallic ring. All that a reS does is give a slight increase in the number of fragments per roid and a small increase in the frequency of high yield roids. The caveat in this is Osmium, platinum and Painite. These three ores can only be sourced at a RES.
It is far safer to just drop at a random part of the ring, especially for new players in smaller ships.
Since this thread has been necroed, I'll post this correction.

found that out last night...... dropped into a HAS/RES@ VARATI BC 6 in my cobra III [woah] and had a shiny new ship back at Thompson Dock in very short order,
sold all my mining stuff and went back to killing instead.
Hi everyone.
Having done a fair bit of mining since the new updates, I thought i`d put down a few thoughts.
Mining can be a "spare time filler" when you don't want to do trading/ combat. Or it can be your main source of income when your don't have access to the more expensive ships.
Its fairly quiet, and you usually do not see any enemy ships / fed police when you're out there mining in a ordinary Resource Extraction Site (depending upon location).
There is something satisfying about blasting rocks out of the void and making a healthy profit from it at the same time.
Of course there exceptions to this, if you decide to be brave and drop into a "populated" RES site such as a High, Med, Low and now Hazardous.
What are the benefits of the populated RES?
There is a greater abundance of the "rare" ores, such as gold, silver, palladium etc...And the percentage of mineral value is a lot higher, based upon RES difficulty.
As you are in a asteroid field as opposed to a belt, there are loads of rocks for you to point your lasers at. Which in turn makes it much quicker to fill up your cargo hold.
Are there any drawbacks of populated RES?
There is all that ore just lying there to be blasted out of the rock, and the pirates know it!
If you drop into a RES, the level of the RES will dictate the level of skill required to kill the pirates, Low, Med, High.
What this means in the game is you can easily drop into the rings of a planet or an ordinary RES, and not be too bothered about being attacked by pirates. Yes they "may" appear, but the level of the pirate is very low - as in mostly harmless, etc. But if you drop into a populated RES, the level of it will dictate the level of pirates, and numbers also.
Thus the higher the level of the RES, the harder the pirates are and the size of their wings also.
