I'd still say "for some sulphur for my first engineering", I'd suggest using the srv to prospect for it normally because it's the fastest and most immediately convenient way to get what's needed without advanced locational knowledge and a good thing for a new player to know anyway. Only one of the first page replies mentioned it at all. About the most helpful direct advice was "don't mine for it".

Organically, the thread probably helped the op tons either way (your contributions fit squarely in that bracket) but I do question the "jump to z, ignore a to y" priority for advice given the content of the op and his first reply, which made it really clear they weren't after the advanced stuff. I can see you identified that, just felt the overall discussion around barnacles, thargoid systems, g4 trading etc fell outside of the demands of the original question.

I've just noticed this habit here a lot with similar threads. Like "I need 10 arsenic for my first fsd upgrade, what's the fastest method?" threads getting the "go to shard sites" replies on page one. It's the correct answer to a certain question from a certain player, just not for that player asking that question.

There is a way of farming in asteroid instance that spawns just a cluster of a few. These refresh periodically. Mining for mats in rings? Not worth it. Is just rng rolling and a waste of good time.

Thanks for all the help everyone! I'm going to go back to a planet surface just to learn the basics in the srv as Northpin suggested. THEN I am going to go outside the bubble! A daunting but exciting task.

Now maybe I was mistaken when I said my FSD was fully g3. Perhaps I didnt complete the g3 modicfication. Regardless Im thinking I could purchase a DBX and put the FSD on it? Trying to make my long voyage as painless as possible.

BTW when I'm outside the bubble should I be scanning all the planets and such when I enter a system? Is there a way to scan everything efficiently?

Like I said Im very excited to go into the unknown and a little scared!

When I jump into any system, I honk. If I want some exploration data the honk usually gets 10-40k, depending on the system. The FSS would be next and it can make into the hundreds of k per system. But it can be time consuming if you come across a system with 100+ bodies in it.

Quickest for me is that I always honk, and then I open the system map and see if any worlds look 'interesting'. Interesting to me is Ammonia world (AW), Water world (WW), or Earth Like World (ELW), those I will FSS scan. And unless I am strapped for time, I will fly to each of the Aw, Ww, or Elws, and detailed surface scan them. AW, WW, ELW's are usually worth 500k plus, more if they are terraformable, when you sell the data to UC.

So that is the quick method I use: honk, quick review of system map, open FSS and track down any AW, WW, or ELW. If I have time I DSS those as well. The other planets I do not consider worth the time.

Honk your D Scanner when you drop in. You look at the system map, you'll see which planets have been discovered and mapped first which is sometimes pointless scanning again yourself. You'll still receive Cartographic Data and be able to sell it but it depends if you have the time to do it.
It is cool if you discover a planet or system that no other person has found before.
Your name stays on those planets forever but make sure you hand in the data before another player who may also have been there but not yet handed them in.

There is no way to scan everything efficiently. You either scan everything or scan only high value planets. Efficiency is what you define getting out of your time spent in the game.

You don't need to but doing so will get you exploration data which will earn you credits (and get your name on planets if you're the first person to visit them) when you sell it to Universal Cartographics.

Also, you'll need to scan things to find planets with Geological and Biological POIs on them.

Rather than attempting to explain it all here, it'll probably be better if you just go to Youtube and search for "Elite how to use FSS" and "Elite how to use DSS".

The FSS is the system scanner, which locates all the planets in a system and gives you basic info' about them.
The DSS is the surface scanner, which you use to get detailed information about a planet, after you've found something interesting using the FSS.
The FSS is built into your ship.
You'll need to fit a DSS module into a vacant C1 slot of your ship.

If you want to wait until the weekend, I can probably give you a lift to the mat' sites in my FC.

Well, Eyeball Mark 1 - it takes some practice. Or you can try to use the Spansh plotter if you are in a more traveled part of the galaxy (it relies on commander summited data if i not mistaken)

So I just finished the mod to G3 my FSD and my jump range is still 38ly! What gives? My inventory is empty. Hell I even have the Stripped Down effect

Check the rest of the build i posted and compared with what you have on your ship.
Make sure you have D-rated everything except the PowerPlant and of course the FSD and use smaller one (4d thrusters, 3 or 4d distributer, etc)

Very true and worth noting that your advice was itself (as always) accurate and helpful.

Ok so I managed to get my FSD to G4. Now I'm at Deciat trying to find somewhere I can purchase these D rated items to do your build. When I put 4D Thrusters in Inara then choose Deciat as my system...nothing comes up. This has happened everytime I search Inara for outfitting items near Deciat.

As promised - Note what boxes I changed -stations selling modules, system (Deciat) in reference system, no to planetary bases (unless you want them)
