Mining lasers - pointless?

I have two small mining lasers, a refinery, a cargo scoop, two cargo racks and a tiny shield on my mining Sidewinder, MSS Chip. I can haul 8 tonnes of what ever I find back to the station to sell. I really don't care what it is I find. If I make 50 credits or 10,000 credits makes zero difference to me. I like drifting around in the rocks chipping away at them and then playing fetch with the scoop. All this with some nice laid back tunes. It's a Zen thing....

I think the Cobra MKIV is now the ship which can get it’s own value back in the shortest possible time as in rebuys/minute. Love that ship for Mining.

Absolutely, however the mk3 is nearly as good for those who can't get one - Krait Phantom would be my next pick.

edit - also to add - taking along traditonal beam laser is worth it, as you can "top up" on low temp diamonds in the traditional manner while cracking roids.

That's a sentiment i can really get behind.

Ahhh, good to know! Ironically, to the OP's point, I might be using just mining lasers for my very deep space mining (which is just a "side hobby" to exploring). At least it sounds like "traditional" mining has also seen a buff.

Never mind. Mining is too complex (too many "tools") to bog down my exploration ship with. I guess I'll stick to salvage operations.

What is this? I can use regular beam lasers to mine diamonds? WHAAAAAAAT?

I'm sorry for going off topic, but I'm very confused now - how is it possible to mine anything without mining tools? I'm talking about these low temperature diamonds (something I'm specifically interested in). And if it's possible to get a LTD with a regular laser,

1) Does a mining laser give more LTDS?
2) Do I need a refinery for LTDS?

You'll notice #1 is on-topic ;)

You can't use a regular laser (pulse, burst or beam) to mine with. The only type of laser that can be used to mine is a mining laser (mining lance is also possible but locked to being a powerplay reward).

As far as I know you will still need a refinery, but if you are only looking for one thing you can use the smallest available.

The only way I can think of 'mining' for LTDs without mining tools is usually called by another name: piracy

That's a "regular" mining laser - sorry for confusion - it can "suck" up regular low temp diamond just like it always could - that can be used to top of any partial mined stuff in your hoppers from the new methods.
BTW as you may or may not know you can "store" extra tons of material in your hopper. eg I just brought in 40 Tons of diamonds in a 32 ton cargo Cobra mk4 using that method.
edit - hopefully for further clarity
Set up for Deep core mining - blow the asteroids apart - gather amongst other stuff LTD's - also take along a "traditional" mining laser and use it in the "old" way to extract LTD's from "normal" asteroids.
Bonus - sign up for Torval in powerplay - get mining lance - more range for trad mining and you can shoot folk with it (Jury is out on whether it's worth it - i'm saying "why not?").

My own dilemma at the minute is whether to set up the mk4 to be capable of all types of mining at once (it does this easily) or just do deep core while retaining the ability to kill anyone who trys to take the stuff from me (which it can also do).
