Mintaka!

So, about how far out does settled space extend? Did you find any signs of life, human or otherwise, on your trek?

I found two human-habitable, life-bearing worlds on the way:

Mephane you have set the bar pretty high for the rest of us! That's going to be a hard one to top.

Hmmmm, what is more impressive than finding a blackhole? No idea, but it should be fun to see what people come up with. Good job man.

He did already show the biggest known sun, there is a big black hole in the other direction, maybe a neutron star. Or you find the aliens, just dont bring em back.

Hi Mephane,

Did you have any trouble with disconnecting from the server? I can't seem to get past COL 285 SECTOR stars or other 'unnamed' systems. Every time I come out of hyperspace I'm disconnected and return to the main menu. I have no problem getting to named systems... Just to be sure, I've filed a ticket.

I was on my way to Orion as well, but in 1.01 I seem to be stuck :( I can go back, but I don't want to.

I've been having a similar problem crossing the Pegasi Sector. Some of them are fine, but others give a 'can't connect to server' error on coming out of hyperspace. Interestingly, i get no stutters in the witchspace animation when trying to reach systems that crash ... ones that i can get to i get a few seconds of jerkiness.

I found a restricted/permit system Witch's Reach in the core systems I wonder if it's connected to the resticted Witch nebula systems you found?

I've had occasional disconnect at the end of a jump, but they were always one-time affairs, the next attempt to jump to the very same system always worked. By the way, the Gamma 1.01 changelog mentions this bug as being fixed.

Did you try to jump to a non-restricted system and then again attempt to go to the restricted one? I found that I the restriction disappeared after one jump to a different system, so it probably was just some server hiccup.

Dunno what happened, but everything seems to work again this morning.

So, I'm on my way again. :) Awesome thread btw. Very inspiring!

Hi Mephane,

One more question...
What is the jump distance of your ship? Mine can jump over 14 ly gaps. Dunno if it will be enough to reach Orion. I'm about half way, and I saw the star density of the field growing thinner towards the nebula.

Only let me know the distance of yours. When yours is as big as mine (lol) then I know at least there is a route.

Thanks

You have really gone where no other human has Mephane. Hats off to you!

PS: And hilarious sig. There's two eyes without lids, one Sauron and the other...

BTW, I am curious about what price you get for the data you acquired during your trip. You've probably been the first player going so far away from civilised space. Knowing that would be useful to gauge our expectations about exploration as a profession.

My jump range is just a fraction above 20Ly, which I would generally advise to aim for when going that far out. There were areas where I already had to make detours of several systems to be able to keep going; with a smaller jump range, those detours might get longer and longer.

And I haven't yet collected the money for the data. I haven't played yesterday due to the server issues, my plan is to visist M78 first and then head to Sol and sell the data there. :)

Hah, that would be a Home Run for the ages.

I also think that yours perhaps is the very first report of what actually is to be an explorer. I subscribed to the thread. Besides offering very beautiful sights, I find your adventure quite inspiring - I wish I could break free from the limitations of the very expensive 4G connection I'm stuck with at the moment.

Best of luck on your trip! Mishaps like crashing your ship at an asteroid or crippling your jump drive due to excessive heat while refuelling are very clear and present dangers. Fly safe!

I...I...I can't wait (but I'll have to, don't get home until late tomorrow night from my travels)

Also I'm starting in a basic Sidewinder - so I'll need to do some work to get up to an decent exploration Eagle for this (it's the only ship apart from the Sidewinder that allows me to my videos).
