Mission Scaling - An Anecdote

Note to self: buy A-rated Vette before trying to gain rank when I reset my character, so I'm prepared for anything.

The good ones are the pirate leader or just pirate pleb kill missions for 300K where said pirate is 250K Ls from the entry point. Yeah.. he's not hurting anyone out there. I'll just say I killed him and by the time he makes it back I'll be in another time zone.

A rating your vette is just the "ready to leave the station" update. It's still not ready for prime time. You need to engineer the ens out of it. Basically you need to have great expectations removed and mediocre ones installed.

Wow a classic author's name is censored. Imagine that.

/further ship jumps in
/utterly smashed by Deadly Anaconda

Cool cool cool. Yup. Good scaling there, FD. Spot on job. (y)

It sounds like you were followed into the USS from Supercruise by another ship, from either another mission wrinkle, a bounty on you somewhere else in the galaxy, or some cargo you were carrying?

(i.e the Anaconda coming in had nothing to do with the actual mission you took)

You could wait for a delivery mission to get the rank. If you are not that combat focused there are many other kinds of Imperial and Federal missions you can do. That's what I do.

Twas a joke. I have a fully engineered Vette to wreck multiple annies with. I've been known to stack delivery missions mostly to do just that. :D

So I'm ill-disposed towards the whole enterprise at the moment and have barely - barely - managed to resist wiping my save again; which is what I usually do when I die for idiotic, stupid reasons of my abject, worthless failure to achieve anything in life.
I'm probably part of the "gid gud" crowd, but I still want to chime in here. Behind the vitriol and idiotic language the whole point of it is quite positive. Nobody starts as a pro pilot and most players never reach that point and that's fine. It's mostly about realising what you can change and what you can't. This helps to develop the patience with yourself to just get ever so slightly better than before, because absolutely nobody is an expert at start. Stopping your progress, because of a slight mistake doesn't help. The whole "gid gud" stuff is mainly about accepting ones limitations by finding them in the first place. Idiotic reasons to fail are always there, but you shouldn't feel bad about them.
Apart of that, the "gentleman pirates" are actually those guys and gals, which will be most helpful, because they don't interdict you simply to kill you, but to communicate with you. Their civility isn't there to make you feel weak, but mostly pretty honest, because pirating requires the victim to play along. If that puts you in a bad position, tell them. There are enough pirates which will be happy with some banter, instead of your cargo.
