Mission Scaling - An Anecdote

Ooh, lovely. A promotion opportunity from Master to Squire. I've been waiting for this. Let's see now. Kill a pirate. Okay, I can probably do that. I mean I've built up my reputation by ferrying data from one place to another; but okay. I'm sure a little combat isn't completely beyond me.

/fits cannon, missiles, beam lasers to Alliance Crusader; heads out into black.
/locates target; drops out of supercruise.

Oh, okay. A Competent Fer-De-Lance. Hmm. Not exactly the shieldless Hauler I was hoping for, but I might give it a...

/further ship jumps in
/utterly smashed by Deadly Anaconda

Cool cool cool. Yup. Good scaling there, FD. Spot on job. (y)
Reminds me of the Thread 0 USS I dropped in with my Keelback and deadly SLF pilot.
Three (!) Anacondas jump in, wreck me faster then I could store my weapons.
No warning, no whatsover. I didn't have cargo. No idea, this never happened again to me ?!
I guess the game doesn't like my Keelback.

Nice, you found a challenge in this game besides Thargoids!
How come you have been wrecked by a ship that boosts only about 330?

It just *s me right off. And yeah, I know there's going to be the Hardcore Git Gud™ crowd wading in in a minute telling me I'm not playing properly if I wasn't the best combat pilot in the Galay the moment I first installed the game, but * them. The proportionality in this game is totally screwed. This comes on the heels of having to ditch a batch of Poll Data Retrieval missions because it doesn't make clear in the mission text that while Planetary Scan Jobs are essentially zoom in, grab the data, zoom out, PDR jobs are essentially full-on slug-fests which my SRV withstood the first of for about four and a half seconds. Clearly the rest weren't going to happen, so why bother?

So I'm ill-disposed towards the whole enterprise at the moment and have barely - barely - managed to resist wiping my save again; which is what I usually do when I die for idiotic, stupid reasons of my abject, worthless failure to achieve anything in life.

Instead of that, this time, I'm going to go fly in Open, and if one of these "Roleplaying A Gentleman Pirate" types wants to come take my ship apart because I won't play along with their façade of civility, I invite them to knock them ****ing selves out.

This post was brought to you by unreasonable rage caused by other issues than a computer game (not least spelling 'Galaxy' as 'Galay'), but the computer game happened to be in the way.
I dare say that open isn't going to make you happier, however I think you already know that.
Yes, the rank mission system is nonsensical and random.

There will always be things in this game, intentional or unintentional, that are going to kill you. So just take it easy.
Even if you don't have the best flight skills in the world, situational awareness is a skill that doesn't have physical limitations in this case. Next time, just get some distance and assess the situation. HD G5 HRPs also help, of course.;)

Situational awareness isn't that helpful if the game decides to spawn an Elite NPC directly behind you and that NPC instantly opens fire.
Add the time humans require to actually react so something - astonishing long time - and you get a bad and unneeded gameplay mechanic.

Still, now I'm coming down off the rage I have the contrition to do. You didn't deserve my abruptness and I apologise. I also apologise to B1rdy for the same. And I suppose I should apologise to FDev too, not that I imagine they're overly bothered by Just Another Salty Post, but still, my universal, all-round ineptitude isn't really their fault.

Yet your self-reflection, honesty and being ready to apologize is a rarity on this forum. You have my respect and admiration.

On all the rest, as others already have started pointing out: it's not only about being a great pilot. I also am mediocre at best. My combat success is mostly based on building and fine tuning my ships. As the forum is full of theory crafters, willing and able to share their knowledge, it shouldn't be hard for you to find good advise on how to improve your ship and get much better survivability, too.

I feel like this is actually an improvement to how some of these Military missions used to work.

I often found it odd that I was being given a promotion in the military for delivering a data package a single jump over, when I had been building up my reputation with them by assasinating people and assaulting ground bases.
