Missions, the Background Simulation, and why they should matter to you (and Frontier)

I totally understand what the OP is saying.
The BGS is really the backbone to ED.
If it presented itself better (I have no idea how atm) and more players took it seriously/understood it, it would rock.
It really would make small clusters come alive.

There is opportunities for mini games with the BGS. I mean alot.
So many clever tactics could be employed.
It really is a gold mine.

I can for once admit that something is working out here.

I was trying to farm some imperial rank in a place that was said to be good for that but RNGesus didn't love me recently so things were only crawling along.
Then I noticed that the system got into outbreak state and suddenly tons of missions for meds where there so I started taking these as the data delivery ones that were mentioned to be the nice way here were lacking, now I've got a huge rep with the guys, several rank percent and made a few million on the side from other deliveries and helped stopping an outbreak.

Didn't have this much fun with running back and forth for missions since a long while :3

PS: does anyone know how to cause an outbreak? XD

DANGER! Wall O' Text Signature Detected..
And appreciated.

I agree wholeheartedly. I tried to make this point to the pirates complaining about no one to hunt, but was instead told that they preferred to switch to private group, so they could pirate each other, I guess.

You need to mess with their standard of living. That's all I know. Think non-functioning government that can't provide for its population or ensure the distribution of basic services like water. There must be some way to trigger it because it obviously does trigger. I suspect if you keep a system in lockdown for a while, something might happen.

Someone really needs to run a series of experiments.

Yes, actually, since 2.1 hit I've been noticing much more how missions are tied to your rep and influence, and I've actually started paying attention to the factions, because it's all laid out so nicely on the new Mission Board. I've chosen a 'home' system now and I'm working on raising my rep with everyone there, so that I get better and better missions and bigger payouts. It's actually kind of fun, which isn't something I could say about missions before. The missions themselves are still kinda meh for the most part, but at least when you're doing them you have a purpose. It's an improvement!

Exactly this. I haven't played since Jan, but now I'm doing this, and loving it. As ElecticZ says, if missions, factions, BGS can tie up better it'll be awesome.
...And reduce the mission bugs. ...And fix the NPC's dark eye shadows so they don't look like they all haven't slept in a week :D

Just a small note, if you are considering working in a particular area/system it would be prudent to contact locally based player groups - their faction should have a description in the GalMap. This would ensure that you and the group aren't working at cross purposes - unless of course that is your evil intention!

I wish I was English like my hero Tj.
I primarily do missions, so I do agree in that they are very important to my own enjoyment at least. :)

Nice post, ElectricZ.

As a "returner", who keeps popping back into ED after major updates, i see some nice improvements, not least the fact that system states will effect the delivery payout for selected commodities.
This makes trading much less of a hit and miss affair, and allows for a bit more deliberate planning, good. It also makes plain old sense, something i often have criticized being amiss too many places in ED.
Then there is the mission revamp, or rather the mission UI revamp really, the missions remain more or less the same i feel. But there are some cherries to be picked now payout wise, nice.
So, much better now and more enjoyable than the old system.
Both important points for me, trading and missions tend to be what i do most.
But where it all threatens to fall down (for me) are some of the mission bugs. Just coming from the game, having paid a 2.8mil fine for a failed (redirected) delivery because the mission board didn't show me the hand in screen.
Some of the mission bugs have been well documented from way back last year, some even be reported during beta, and still.
I know there are only that many hours in a day and there're release schedules to keep, and god knows what else.
But the bug related frustrations might drive me and others straight back onto the fence if they are allowed to persist much longer, despite a slowly improving game.
Oh, the BGS, right. I think i will always struggle with it.
Despite improvements (the before mentioned system states) it still feels impenetrable, "removed" from day to day game play and certainly not bug free either.
Sometimes i wonder if even FD understands it to it's full extent.

2.1 has been amazing for missions. One more step towards where I think FD want it to go. I think in a few years it will be even better.

Once again, 2.1 could be amazing for missions if they fix the bugs. And I say "if" because historically, the mission system has been bugged since 1.0. The rewritten mission system has only been live for a week, sure, but a lot of the bugs present now were reported and unfixed in Beta. Based on previous updates to the mission system, in 1.5/2.0, uncompletable missions stayed in the game for months, even after FD said they were going to make a pass between releases to remove them.

1.6/2.1's mission update is too good of an update to let fall by the wayside. Frontier needs to pay attention to all of the "missions are busted" threads on all the major forums, and players need to keep posting them until they do, instead of hoping that in a few years it gets better.

See? Now this is exactly what I meant in the original post. System State can create a rush of trade in a system, in effect creating a mini Community Goal. And there are no tiers - even if you are a small ship you will make a great profit on your hauls without having to worry about competing with Type 9's to get into the top 15%. Plus you rank up with the local faction, earning better missions and a way to pick up even more credits and money until the situation stabilizes in your system. You get to be a hero AND make money at the same time.

That sounds like FUN to me. Games are supposed to be fun. I read that in a manual somewhere. :p

Now if only the galmap would correctly filter on system state so we could find these juicy opportunities to put the new mission system, BGS system states and faction reputation mechanics to work! (Hint hint)

No kidding, outbreak made them buy Basic Meds for 3k, and they cost 10% of that like 30ly away. If I'd had a Cutter or something, damn xD
Weirdly enough though, Adv Meds were also 3k but cost 1.2k by default, still more than you normally get out of them but still not as good.

OK so a few days have passed with a couple new patches. When the missions work, it's great fun. They've addressed some of the issues with missions in the .02 patch and more are undoubtedly coming. That's cool and all but there are still bugs in the BGS that have been around since 1.0. Namely, that the galmap and commodity screen still can't be trusted when searching for goods.

I got a mission to source some Reactive Armor and Battle Weapons. I'm supposed to be able to open galmap, open the Weapons category and select those two commodities and see in systems in which I've collected trade data who is buying and selling them.

And I'm told that VZ Corvi, a Federation Agricultural system, where battle weapons and reactive armor are illegal, are the place to get them, with blue arrows arching across the map to all the nearby systems. Two other systems also show as exporting them, but do not in fact produce or sell them.

EDIT: VZ Corvi has a bunch of stations and outposts, and I did find the Battle Weapons in very limited quantities at a lone outpost, so that part appears to be working! Moral of the story, check the corner store when the big box doesn't have what you need in inventory. Still looking around for the reactive armor though

On the flip side, when visiting a refinery/industrial station, I'm picking up some aluminum to haul back to VZ Corvi for a mission. I should be able to check the commodity list and select VZ Corvi from the drop down to see what VZ Corvi needs. That way I can load up my hold with the most valuable commodity to maximize the profit from the trade run. Some of the commodities are correct - crop harvesters and other ag related materials are for sale and show exported to VZ Corvi. But at the same time, beer and wine shows VZ Corvi as "Exported To" even though the station has none for sale, and VZ Corvi sells both by the megaton.

Obviously some data in the trade tables is backwards. It might not seem like a big deal, because anybody whose played the game enough knows what items are available for sale and what will be purchased by looking at the system description. But when it comes to actually trying to find materials to source like these battle weapons, it turns what should be a fun exercise in buy-low-sell-high into a frustrating shell game, made worse if there is a mission fine or reputation on the line.

Even more concerning is the effect this has on the BGS itself. If I understand correctly, these trade routes are supposed to determine the economy of the galaxy at large. What effect does this have on system states and supply and demand? Odd price fluctuations and inventory for one, but it's got to also affect the number and types of missions available at a station, not to mention triggers for state changes. All of which feeds back into the entertainment value of the mission system and BGS in general. When it works, it's great... But when it doesn't, it really impacts my enjoyment of the game. I'm really, really hoping that this gets the kind of love that the AI is getting. Even though it's not as flashy or important, it the foundation of the game.

And the new system state galmap filter is still busted. I'm really looking forward to being able to use it -- I think it will be a great source of fun for the whole galaxy... if it works.
