More personality and depth....please?

This game need some personality...........

Don't get me wrong, I love it but it's lacking some charm and depth in terms of immersion.

An example of this is the station menu, it's functional but lacks any real personality. I feel that there is a lot of room to add personality to the station and the universe in general.

For example why are all weapons and equipment generic. There is no branding, no idea where it comes from, no depth. If you had different manufacturers all competing for you business and offering their wares to suit different markets like in real life e.g.

Blazzer - low cost, lightweight weapons mainly energy based for small and medium turrets - suitable for traders/explorers who only have weapons fitted as a precaution. The efficiency and damage would be relatively poor.

Vance & Klein - mid price, well made reliable weapons for all ship types and sizes - suitable for everyone.

Winchester - expensive, exquisite weapons for professionals, specialising in mid to large turrets.

This means you now have some real choice, each manufacturer will have a range of weapons, there is room for specialists, i.e. missile launcher manufacturer and you can have certain manufacturers weapons only available in certain areas, i.e. federation space only and even down to having handcrafted weapons available from one outlet in one station.

You could also have second hand ships & equipment that is much cheaper but far less efficient.

If you did this for each area of equipment it would feel much more real. You could then have, munitions, repairs, fuel and commodities following the same model. I'd love to see an advert when coming into dock from 'Sam's service and repair' who will 'beat any quote' but whose work will never reach 100%. You could choose to use that service or go for a more expensive service and repair that might actually give you a small boost to your modules. Perhaps when you are on a backwater outpost there will be no choice. Or how about 'Uracol - uranium enriched fuels' for abit more range.

The contact section & bulletin board could also do with some personality, I'd love to be able to build up a network of contacts that improve the more you use them and can offer you special missions/rewards as time goes by. They could be affiliated to one of the three main factions or to one of the local system factions, they could be neutral, criminal, pirates etc.. I hate to mention EVE but their agents are the sort of thing I'm thinking of but with the ED touch. If you work for a Federation agent and build up a good reputation with the federation then when you move on to a new station the Federation agent there will be more inclined to work with you, obviously not quite to the extent of your previous agent etc... You could even have agents as central parts of a short mission based storyline. So instead of having an assassination mission that gives you a system you could be directed to another agent who can give you details on the targets last known position or tells you a rumour about his favourite hunting ground. Just make it more involved than it currently is.

Implementing these kind of changes would add depth and make the universe feel more real. Choice, brands, NPCs you can interact with, agents would all add real depth and give the galaxy a sense that it's a living breathing environment.

Yes, more in depth "lore" and such is something i hope for.
Also a sort of encyclopedia where you can read up on noth technology, history and celebrity npcs.

Im talking in game, maybe in a future ships log system, i know all this is available around the net already.

I absolutely second this. As much as I like the game, sometimes after travelling long distances a bit "warmth" is really needed, meaning that I want to leave my ship (in game of course) and maybe meet other people in the station .. why not add a "bar" of some sorts, where you can meet up, have strange encouters with doubious merchants or spys, make new contracts etc. something like this --> http://www.itsartmag.com/features/itsart/wp-content/uploads/2014/03/Dimitar-Marinski-scifi-bar.jpg
Also if I pimp my craft I would actually love to see it in hangar being pimped, or when I unload/load cargo it would nice to have some sort of animation going on.. or when I pay my fees I would love to see the office. That all may sound a bit old schoolish, but I think that would add a lot to the atmosphere of the game. Of course, I wouldnt remove the ship online screen system for interaction, since its quicker and sometimes you just want to do things speedy. It would just be an addition for the moments when you need a small brake from your Commander business. Also I know this is release 1.0 and the focus was to get other things working first, but maybe for a version 2.0 release that would be really nice to have. :)

I agree, this was one of the main reasons for my suggestion that Frontier allow Mission content and lore to be crowd sourced. That way, anyone who wanted to contribute could.

the best way to solve the issue is to make specific, detailed suggestions. for example, you can research 'quests' on Wikipedia and you will see an explanation of the general themes. kill an enemy, recover an artifact, escort an important person, etc. and to make sure there are many steps involved, and puzzles and problems to solve along the way. the developers are probably working on fixing bugs and making money to pay off their staff. development would happen faster if they had detailed proposals to add to the game, not just ideas.

for example, make a Mission thread and start posting ideas for complex missions, and hopefully they will read it some day and start incorporating the best ones.

Going over individual detailed ideas is tough enough, not to mention the difficulty in putting it into practice. I like the idea of crowdsourcing this- get a community based team with access to descriptions and the like, who can design immersion lore for planets, systems, weapons, etc., and work with the devs to make it happen. Really, as much as I love the idea, I don't think I'm paying enough to make it happen. I'm more concerned with more fundamental things that could be done right now anyway.

I like this suggestion a lot, and I've thought similar myself. When you first start the game and zoom out on the galaxy map, you're struck by the enormity of it, but after a little while of playing it begins to feel small. All the stations and outposts, while looking a little different, feel exactly the same. You pass the same dozen or fewer ship types consistently. The range of options for upgrading your ship is a narrow tick list. The missions are all just repeated chunks of text on a screen, with no personalisation or engagement.

I'd love an experience wherein you can call by a new outpost and find "honest mike's ship parts", a dealer existing there and nowhere else who will still you custom made parts, completely unique. Maybe they're expensive or maybe they just break after a while because they're bespoke. Perhaps you found this shop by an advert that was up in another station. Could be someone contacts you at a station and offers you a one-off mission with a unique reward. This sort of freedom and customisation, to me, should pervade a game to make it truly feel big. It'd be great to dock somewhere and be able to glance at the other ships and see no two alike.

Of course this is all just wishing out loud. The small feel doesn't diminish my enjoyment of the game, but I do think it'll restrict for how long I remain interested.

Couldn't agree more. You don't actually need that much to give places a more personalised (or at least varied) feel. Variations in texturing, some differing voiceovers (we have none at the moment) - look at how X3 does it (which is most definitely done on a budget).

Heck we have paint jobs in the game - give them to the NPCs with themes. Make it so that the Purple Corporation are all purple skinned ships. Something to give a sense that the universe isn't totally randomly generated :)

Thinking further about it, maybe the system for items, modules, weapons etc could borrow from RPGs. So instead of just 'a mining laser', you have a specific mining laser, tech level X, with stats Y and Z. This could give an extra dimension to trade as well, with items being with trading to other players.

I'm guessing that at some point, vanity items are going to be a thing, either purchased in game or as rewards or from the cash shop like the current skins. I'd quite like an *akrapovic exhaust on my Viper, it already has the sound of a MotoGP bike on the overrun, but the odd flame popping out of the exhaust would be a laugh.

I'm sure there's plenty of people who'd enjoy 'barrying' up their ships. I'm now thinking of the pimped Tie Fighter in Blue Harvest.

*Product placement could generate cash for the devs ;)

because there are only two types of objects in the game: machines (stations, ships) and space objects (planets, stars and meteors)

not a single living creature nor face in the entire game :D

ps. yeah, except our own hands behind the wheel

Something else I noticed which actually really hurts the immersion and makes it feel more "Elite: Generic" to me is the fact the background while in supercruise is just that a background its like a solid painting it has no life at all not one star twinkles or for that matter even shifts position while you are cruising at near light speeds. Not one damn twinkle nothing its all flat and even moves with your ship like its a curtain draped across your bow.

Hate to say this but i really see minimal programming here. I see a lot of pretty drawings with no movement. Did you even notice while in supercruise the planets & stars you come across are not even rotating? The solar flares are just stuck there as well unless you drop out of supercruise.

Well to twinkle there needs to be an atmosphere, which obviously there isn't; all other systems are so far away that you will not get any movement except for stars and planets within the system; the objects probably are rotating, but too slowly to notice; think of the Earth. You would have to be quite patient to notice its rotation, given that it spins around once in 24 hours.

Makes sense. Just want more eye candy!

You can have a Massive Universe or a detailed one.Not both to hand craft each solar system would be an enormus undertaking.Hopefully little touches to make places in the universe less generic will come later, but each solar being eunique is not going to happen
