Hardware & Technical Motherboard needs new cpu

I have an ASUS motherboard: M3N78 Pro

I have an AMD Athlon 64x2 Dual Core Processor 5200+ 2.70 Ghz.

This processor does not read some graphic instruction sets. I have a gt630 2 gig graphics card (with very cool heatsink).

Any suggestions for upgrading my cpu? I've looked at lists of compatibles but I slip into a coma trying to understand what I need.

Thanks for any sympathy. : )

Where did you find that your CPU does not read some graphics instructions?:S
What relation does your CPU has with GT630?
Probably cool heat sink is the only thing it has.

You need a complete system upgrade CPU/MB/RAM/GPU/PSU, i.e. completely new PC.

There is absolutely no sense in upgrading your CPU only.

Actually if you look at the minimum specifications for Elite; a CPU upgrade might well be what the OP needs...

So you could look at the wonderful Ebay and see about picking up an AMD Phenom x4 (make sure it is a socket AM2+) for about £40. Your GPU should be okay if you are willing to turn down the details.

Building a new machine would be better but I wouldn't discount being able to play it with a bit of an upgrade.

I'm not sure what you are talking about with the comment about Graphics instructions...that has me confused.

I consider buying 6-7 year old used CPU for £40 - insane. It has no warranty, its condition is unknown and CPU lifecycle is usually 10 years, which might be decreased if overclocked at higher voltage then recommended.

And actually if you look at the minimal specs for the GPU and compare them OP's GPU you will easily notice that OP's GPU does not satisfy them.

GTX260, which is listed in minimal requirements:

GPU Engine Specs
CUDA Cores - 192
Graphics Clock (MHz) - 576MHz
Processor Clock (MHz) - 1242MHz
Texture Fill Rate (billion/sec) - 36.9

Memory Specs

I see I am way too lame to understand this. Sorry I bothered you. Bleh I'll have to get some remedial RL help, methinks.

okay, thanks. I don't see where the minimum hardware requirements are. The forums take a little digging around.

Each new CPU generation adds some new instructions but this does not make older CPUs obsolete.

Minimal requirements are listed here:
https://store.zaonce.net/elite-dangerous-premium-beta.html/

Minimum recommended hardware specification:
Direct X 11
Quad Core CPU ( 4 x 2Ghz is a reasonable minimum)
2 GB System RAM (more is always better)
DX 10 hardware GPU with 1GB video ram
Nvidia GTX 260
ATI 4870HD
Internet connection

I had never really checked the hardware specs before installing ED - and I am quite surprised that despite being unsupported, my 9800GT is doing an OK job.

I have every intention of chucking in a new card soonish, but until it is closer to gamma I will probably not do it.

But to the OP: I would definitely say upgrade your GPU - you can pick up a GTX650 for around £100

Oh yippie ki aay!! Thanks so much. I did see the minimum requirements when I bought the game but forgot where they were.

I have 8 G of Ram and my graphic card is a Gforce 630 w/2gig

soooooo....we are thinking I can upgrade my cpu and come and pew pew pew. Thanks again.

I'm working on voice commands for my hotas...RAWR!!!

Definitely GTX650 for £100 is not worth it for at least several reasons.

1. Its performance is about the same as GTX260.

GPU Engine Specs:
CUDA Cores - 384
Base Clock (MHz) - 1058
Texture Fill Rate (billion/sec) - 33.9

Memory Specs:
Memory Clock - 2500MHz
Standard Memory Config - 1024 MB
Memory Interface - GDDR5
Memory Interface Width - 128-bit
Memory Bandwidth (GB/sec) - 80.0

2. You can buy GTX750Ti 2GB or R7 260x for about £100 and these GPUs offer much better performance.

3. GTX650 was released quite some time ago (almost 2 years)

CPU upgrade won't give you significant performance increase. Your GPU might easily bottleneck the performance to about 20fps at lowest graphics settings.

Does this thread really belong to off-topic discussion and not to Elite Dangerous support?

You could go for an AMD Phenom II X4 945 to 965 or an AMD Athlon II X4 620 to 640 - all chips to suit your motherboard.

Depending on the BIOS version on your motherboard, you may need to re-flash your BIOS with the latest version (**before changing CPU**) to ensure that the motherboard recognises the new CPU. CPU compatibility for a BIOS version should be able to be checked on the ASUS website.

The game is going to be still optimized with regard to the requirements minimal.

If you absolutely want to upgrade the CPU, the motherboard is apparently compatible with the AMD Phenom series, according to the ASUS website. Perhaps, you will need to update the bios ? But this is not sure.

I think first of all we need to hear what OP wants to achieve with this upgrade. The reason for the upgrade given in the first post is CPU incompatibility with some of the graphic instructions seems really strange for me.

If OP wants to achieve 40+ FPS in ED than CPU upgrade only will be not enough and mostly it will be a waste of money.

What is the budget for the upgrade?

Okay, you guys got me in the ballpark from just a giant question mark stuck in my head. I was wondering about the community and I see I am in great hands.

My bad for not mentioning that I cannot run the dogfight mod from Star Citizen. I bought SC quite some time ago. Then a guy who works with my fiance has been so hooked over there he has already spent several thousand dollars.

I am going to be 69 years old next month and if anyone is trying to get by cheap, it would be me on my pension. Hate to admit it, but it's true.

Yes, my graphics card is a tad old but it does run Elite as it is now. A game in Steam won't run, to my surprise. That's when I looked at graphic instruction sets and knew the talon of technology was breathing down my neck.

So, I have more than enough info now and I may have to do the CPU first and the graphics card later. Maybe Santa Claus will bring me one.

I recently finished up with EVE after over seven years. It was an amazing experience and now I'm ready for Elite...

thanks again, and fly safe.
