Mr. Brookes please confirm this lore change.

I was hoping for some thargoids appear in game that would be friendly and winging up with us against a new enemy.

Getting them back as the same old same old would be a disappointment. And a cheap cop out in my opinion.

Wasted potential.

I was under the impression that the official novels are canon - so Lave Revolution happened, Sakers exist(ed), there were shenanigans in the Prism system and that DORIS' creators are out there somewhere...

Friendly. Thargoids.

I don't even...

I think they still are. But the lore stuff in Drew Wagar's page included stuff from the original Elite, Frontier and First Encounters, any of which supposedly are no longer canon.

I recall during the kickstarter (that thing where they made lots of promises and lied a fair bit too- yes I am bitter about it) campaign MB did say the Thargoid 'history' was the the one that the governments / powers / factions told people, the truth may indeed be different. I don't have an issue with that. After all history is written by the victor and all that. What I can say is the game we have and they are making isn't what was expected, this then leads to further thinking that they wish to remove all of the history so that no one can complain about "things being different in the past".

Without and official confirmation however, this is all just wind in the air.

I tweeted Drew and MB looking for clarification, MB hasn't responded, but I think possibly his twitter account is just a platform for sharing books he enjoys rather than a way to actually get in touch with him. Drew put me on to the streamer in question who said two things:

1. It came up in a conversation he had with MB when they met.
2. He intends to ask DB about it "when he comes on for a talk"

So i'm guessing DB will be a guest sometime in the near future on DJ Truthsayers stream?
probably worth a watch to find out exactly what the changes to the lore are and how they might affect any first contact scenario

Hey, they were friendly with you when you delivered them the vaccine. I simply think it would be way more interesting if we fought together against a new Agressor than to have the same old enemies.
Where is the fun in that? We defeated them already once. Nothing new to learn there.

Well, I remember reading somewhere that the force we "defeated" was basically a scouting/expedition fleet. The bulk of the, I assume much larger and deadlier Thargoid fleet is yet to be seen...

We didn't defeat anything. The Thargoids were not at war with us, we were at best a minor skirmish to them (according to MB at least). Humanity may have been at war with them, but they really didn't consider us to be much of an issue.

Be that as it might be. Wont argue about semantics here, because thats pretty useless.

My point still stands. It would be way more interesting to work TOGETHER with the thargoids against an even more alien Invasion than to have the same old thargoids as enemies again.

Getting official word on this, the state of the Lore, from Frontier is paramount.

I can live with the fact that I can't find polonium anywhere. I can deal with the fact that the AI was temporarily bugged after 2.1 or that Power Play essential has no draw for me. For me Elite has always been about the Lore. I hate that Holdstock's The Dark Wheel lost its status as canon but at least Frontier was open about it. We know where we stand in regards to The Dark Wheel. Now that everything from Frontier and First Encounters has been brought to question ... I just want to know where we stand. Tell us what is and isn't canon. Please?

Greetings,

DJTruthsayer announced the other day that he had an epic lore announcement to make. He said he and some others had recently visited the Frontier Developments offices and was given information on a lore change that he could pass on via his Twitch stream as follows:

In Frontier First Encounters, there were multiple endings depending on player action. One involved the player stealing a vaccine for the mycoid virus from INRA and delivering it to the Thargoids, resulting in them rewarding you with a Thargoid ship, and meetings taking place between them and humanity's scientists. It was my understanding up until now that this was what happened as far as the Elite: Dangerous universe is concerned.

There was another ending where the player is instead given a more potent version of the mycoid virus by INRA and delivers this to the Thargoids instead of a vaccine, meaning no Thargoid ship was gifted to humanity and no exchanges of scientific data occurred. The announcement was that this is the actual history of events for Elite: Dangerous.

I've posted this in a couple threads but as yet haven't seen a thread dedicated to it, which surprises me. Perhaps I see a change like this as being quite important, more so than others.

Here is a link to the announcement (2:36).

Mr. Brookes, please confirm this, as the implications of this change govern what we can realistically hope to expect from first contact in Elite: Dangerous.

Regards,

CMDR Tobias Frost

This is correct, there was no official agreement, or cooperation between humanity and the Thargoids in the Elite: Dangerous history. There has been some unofficial contact though.

Thanks for the update Michael. Will we be getting a clearer picture anytime regarding just what elements from the previous games can be considered canon? I know Dave Hughes' Elite: Encounters is due out 'soon'. Will it contain an 'official' timeline for the current game universe?

Lore was always very strong point for me in Elite games - the continuity of it in the previous titles... It made me feel attached to the universe. Now with the potential information that all of that is cancelled... We could AT LEAST use a "new" official timeline, pretty please Frontier.

Remember he said "Elite Dangerous history". That doesn't mean in the previous games. This also means someone in game has had contact with a new race. Player or NPC... .
